Rougier is described as an “integrated forest & trade company” and a large “forest operator” in a WWF press release and report. It is felling trees in an estimated 600,000 hectare area, which is more than is permitted under Cameroonian law.

Farmer Returns 700 Acres To Native American Tribe

Sonoma County, CA - For the first time in nearly two centuries the Kashia Tribe of the Pomo Native Americans will be able to enjoy the Pacific coast where they and their ancestors once hunted, fished, and developed a rich culture. The final piece of the complex deal was completed October 18, 2015 when California landowner, Bill Richardson, agreed to gift his 700 acres family farm to the neighbouring Kashia Tribe of Stewarts Point. The sheep ranch has been in the Richardson family since 1925. No longer must the Kashia remain inland, away from their breathtaking coastline. It took five years of fundraising by the Sonoma County supervisors, The Trust for Public Land, private foundations and groups.

Demonstrators in Oromia, Ethiopia’s largest regional state, have been protesting since Novemeber against the government’s plans to extend the boundaries of the capital Addis Ababa. Protesters say the proposed urban plan, known as Addis Ababa Integrated Master Plan or the “Master Plan”, will displace local farmers through mass evictions. Addis Ababa is one of the fastest growing populations in the world with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%.

A new report released Wednesday finds that unleased fossil fuels on public lands and offshore areas - publicly owned fossil fuels controlled by federal agencies - hold up to 450 billion tons of greenhouse gases. If we allow that coal, oil and natural gas to be developed, we'll cripple America's ability to meet its obligation to cut carbon and avoid the worst effects of the global climate crisis. That's why it's never been more clear that President Obama - and whoever comes after him in the White House - needs to pledge to ban new fossil fuel leases on U.S. public lands and offshore coastal areas.

Such was the case for Ron Finley, who, four years ago, was given an arrest warrant for planting carrots outside of his home on a small strip of city-owned land.

Southern Environmental Law Center Senior Attorney Greg Buppert testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources on Wednesday on the failure of the proposed National Energy Security Corridors Act to account for the significant impacts that natural gas pipelines crossing federal lands would have on the surrounding local communities and private property. The proposed legislation would allow pipelines to be sited through federal lands without providing the general public an opportunity to weigh in. Buppert explained to Congress that the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline have encountered broad opposition from many Virginia communities surrounding the pipelines’ paths.

If you head south on route 183 in central South Dakota, you'll see sprawling farmland all around you. Bald eagles, some as tall as children, will stand guard at the side of the road and swoop low over your car. And if you look to the left at the right moment, you'll see a circle of five giant, white teepees standing in the center of one of the fields. You may wonder what they're doing there, and if you're inclined to take a detour off the highway, the people living in the teepees will welcome you with food and stories of why they're there. Since March, Keith Fielder has been one of the people living in those teepees. The teepees make up a Spirit Camp, built in opposition to TransCanada Corporation's proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
