Julian Assange Files Criminal Complaint Over 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange filed a criminal complaint on December 17, accusing 30 individuals linked to the Nobel Foundation of serious offenses under Swedish law, including gross misappropriation of funds, facilitation of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and financing the crime of aggression. The complaint, submitted to both the Swedish Economic Crime Authority and the Swedish War Crimes Unit, demands the immediate freezing of the SEK 11 million ($1.18 million USD) Nobel Peace Prize funds awarded to Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado.

Who’s The Dictator? Venezuela’s Maduro Or Ukraine’s Zelenskyy

Within the narrow spectrum of establishment punditry, “dictator” functions as a term of opprobrium reserved for governments Washington designates as enemies. By this measure, Maduro is cast as the dictator, while Zelenskyy is sanctified as democratic. Ronald Reagan’s UN ambassador, Jeane Kirkpatrick, wrote about a democracy “double standard” in 1979. A Democrat turned anti-communist neoconservative, she formulated a convenient rhetorical distinction. The so-called Kirkpatrick Doctrine supported “authoritarian” traditional dictatorships and opposed leftist “totalitarian regimes.”

Protest Against Awarding Nobel Prize To Far-Right Maria Corina Machado

On Sunday, a broad alliance of Norwegian groups dedicated to peace and solidarity announced a demonstration planned for Tuesday, December 9, in condemnation of the Nobel Committee’s decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan far-right politician María Corina Machado. Machado has publicly called for a US military intervention against Venezuela, supports the over 1,000 unilateral coercive measures imposed on the country, has played a key role in orchestrating violent and destabilizing actions, and has links to criminal drug trafficking organizations.

Two Peace Prizes: Nobel Legitimizes War While US Peace Prize Honors Resistance

The Nobel Peace Prize was established in 1901. In the decades that followed, Mahatma Gandhi emerged as the international symbol of world peace for resistance to the dominant imperialism of his time – the British Empire. He was never recognized by the Nobel Committee. The Nobel Committee has honored figures ranging from the admirable Martin Luther King Jr. to the war criminal Henry Kissinger. Barack Obama received the prize after less than nine months in office, a “premature canonization” for not being George W. Bush. He then used his acceptance speech to justify US military invention.

Norwegian Peace Council Will Not Celebrate Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Peace Council announced that it will not organize this year’s traditional torchlight procession through downtown Oslo on the day the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded due to its disagreement with the choice of Venezuelan far-right politician María Corina Machado as the winner. The organization, which brings together 17 Norwegian pacifist organizations and some 15,000 activists, declared on Friday, October 24, that it made this decision because its members “do not feel that this year’s winner is in line with the fundamental values of the Norwegian Peace Council.” “It is a difficult but necessary decision. We have great respect for the Nobel Committee and for the Peace Prize as an institution, but as an organization, we must remain true to our principles and to the broad peace movement that we represent.

Nobel War Prize

Alfred Nobel’s will spelled out how he wanted to honor those who are accomplished in the fields of medicine, literature, physics, chemistry, and “the person who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses.” While Nobel’s wishes would seem to be clear, the Nobel Peace Prize is rarely awarded to anyone who actually works for peace as Nobel described. There are many worthy people and organizations who have carried out good deeds for humanity, but few of the winners have actually been peacemakers.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner Supports Israel’s Genocide

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to María Corina Machado, a far-right coup leader in Venezuela who has been funded by the US government for decades. Machado has openly called for the US military to invade Venezuela, in order to overthrow the revolutionary Chavista government of President Nicolás Maduro. She is at the heart of the war that Donald Trump has waged on Venezuela. Machado has endorsed the US military’s extrajudicial executions of Venezuelans in boats in international waters, echoing the Trump administration’s unsubstantiated, evidence-free claims that it is supposedly killing “drug traffickers”. Machado also supports the illegal, unilateral US sanctions that have killed hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans.

When Machado Wins The Nobel Peace Prize, ‘Peace’ Has Lost Its Meaning

When I saw the headline Maria Corina Machado wins the Peace Prize, I almost laughed at the absurdity. But I didn’t, because there’s nothing funny about rewarding someone whose politics have brought so much suffering. Anyone who knows what she stands for knows there’s nothing remotely peaceful about her politics. If this is what counts as “peace” in 2025, then the prize itself has lost every ounce of credibility. I’m Venezuelan-American, and I know exactly what Machado represents. She’s the smiling face of Washington’s regime-change machine, the polished spokesperson for sanctions, privatization, and foreign intervention dressed up as democracy. Machado’s politics are steeped in violence.

Francesca Albanese Wins ‘Lay Down Your Arms’ Award

Lay Down Your Arms awards its annual prize to the United Nations special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories – as the person who, in accordance with Alfred Nobel’s will, has “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations and for the abolition or reduction of standing armies as well as for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” Francesca Albanese [who is a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize] has forcefully and unwaveringly worked against Israel’s full-scale war on the occupied Palestinian territories, in particular Israel´s ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people. She has confronted Israel’s systematic war crimes and crimes against humanity in a truly global outreach.

Han Kang’s Nobel Prize Award Is A Cry For Palestine

South Korean novelist Han Kang has won the Nobel Prize for Literature, beating short-listed literary heavyweights like Thomas Pynchon, Haruki Murakami, Salman Rushdie, Gerald Murnane, and the all-odds-favorite, Chinese author Can Xue.  Han Kang was as shocked as anyone else after receiving the call notifying her that she had won. When asked what she would do next, she said she would quietly "have tea with her son". She has refused a press conference, saying that "with the wars raging between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, with deaths being reported every day, she could not hold a celebratory press conference. She asked for understanding in this matter."

Nobel Peace Prize Goes To Qualified Recipient For First Time In A While

Congratulations are in order for Nihon Hidankyo, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations. The Nobel Peace Prize has for the first time in at least six years gone to a group of people who work to reduce warmaking, people who in fact seek to abolish nuclear weapons. Nihon Hidankyo has relentlessly done the work of educating the world, thanklessly, for many years. This prize should be celebrated far and wide. Congratulations are also in order to the Nobel Committee, for somehow manintaining the prestige of the Nobel Peace Prize despite how the committee has mistreated it time and time again, and for — this time — getting it right. May this mark a new principled commitment!

The War Abolisher Awards Of 2023 And Why They’re Needed

World BEYOND War has just announced the four winners of its third-annual War Abolisher Awards. All are relatively unknown individuals or organizations working from different angles at the giant task of ridding the world of war. Before explaining who they are, I’d like to offer a very brief explanation of why such awards are needed. It’s not because Alfred Nobel got something wrong in creating the Nobel Peace Prize, but precisely because he got it right. Alfred Nobel’s will left funding for a prize to be awarded to “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

Julian Assange Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize

Journalist and Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, as the movement calling for his unconditional release and against his extradition to the United States grows louder. Assange was nominated by several individuals, including members of parliament and former peace prize winners, responding to calls from Assange’s partner Stella Moris. On January 29, a nomination was filed by German politicians Martin Sonneborn, a member of the European Parliament (MEP), and Sevim Dağdelen, a member of the German Bundestag. In their letter to the Nobel Committee, they explained that the nomination of Assange was “in honor of his unparalleled contributions to the pursuit of peace, and his immense personal sacrifices to promote peace for all.”

For The Sake Of Global Health: USA, Stop Lying About Cuba!

Today a People’s Peace Prize was awarded to Cuba’s Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade — not the Nobel Peace Prize, although more than 100 organizations and 40,000 individuals from the U.S. alone supported the Henry Reeve Brigade’s nomination. As the global community stumbled under the coronavirus assault, Cuba’s army of whitecoats rushed to hot spots when called, not shirking the danger. It’s nothing new for them. In 2014, 10,000 Cuban medical professionals volunteered to go to Liberia and Sierra Leone to fight terrifyingly deadly ebola in West Africa. In 2017, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recognized the Henry Reeve Brigade with its prestigious Dr. Lee Jong-wook Memorial Prize for Public Health at a World Health Assembly (WHA) ceremony.

Julian Assange Deserves A Nobel Peace Prize

Julian Assange has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. We think he deserves to win. There is an incredibly long list of actions that Julian has taken toward a more peaceful world. As Julian has said, “If wars can be started by lies, peace can be started by truth.” More than one individual can nominate Assange; he’s already been nominated this year by people including former Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire and French politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Maguire and four other Peace Prize winners wrote a letter to then-President Trump recounting Assange’s contributions toward peace.
