Venezuela And Iran Show Solidarity Can Overcome US Empire

This week, Venezuela and Iran faced up to threats made by the United States and defied the illegal US sanctions by sending five oil tankers from Iran to Venezuela. The US' longterm unilateral coercive measures have prevented the two countries with the largest oil reserves from selling their oil. This economic terrorism has caused tens of thousands of deaths in each country. Despite this economic warfare and constant threats of military attack, the two nations joined together in solidarity and broke through the US blockade to deliver much-needed oil and supplies to Venezuela. This was a victory for sovereignty, independence, and peace. It was an act of dignity for both countries to take this successful stand against the United States.

Statement: U.S Military Threat Against Iranian Tankers

Iran’s daring decision to dispatch five oil tankers carrying the much-needed fuel for the struggling people of Venezuela is a definitive challenge to U.S. government’s illegal policy of unilateral economic sanctions and its naval blockade of Venezuela. Iran’s action has created a decisive test of the Trump administration’s willingness to continue its violations of international law and the UN Charter by taking military action against Iranian tankers. The U.S. Peace Council strongly condemns any military actions against the Iranian tankers and calls upon and the Trump administration and the U.S. government to put an end to its violations of the UN Charter immediately. As Iranian tankers approach Venezuelan waters — the first tanker is expected to enter Venezuelan territorial waters on Sunday — the Trump administration is scrambling to decide how to respond to a challenge that can determine the future of its policy of unilateral coercive measures against one-quarter of humanity.

Cuba’s Resilience Through Economic Crisis Prepared It For COVID Health Crisis

In times of crisis, who we are is revealed. That is true of people and of nations. What COVID-19 has exposed — not created — is a deeply flawed and inequitable society. The truths of how race and class intersect to shorten the existence of some in our society are now laid bare for all to see. The collapse of structures that were barely holding on have revealed how inadequate they were to begin with. The failure of many states to prevent, protect against and help contain an illness that was known about for months shows how concerns over loss of capital took priority over our lives. And it is this capitalist approach to administering government that is perpetuating the same harms and ensuring a continuous crisis for communities most devastated by the pandemic of our lifetime.

Iran Vows ‘Decisive Response’ To US Threats

Tehran has issued a formal warning to Washington over threats to five of its tankers currently en route to Venezuela. On Sunday, Iran’s foreign minister summoned the Swiss ambassador representing US interests in Tehran, vowing that any hostile action would be met with a "quick and decisive response.” The vessels, which set sail from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, are reportedly carrying at least US $45.5 million in gasoline and other products. One of the tankers, Clavel, is presently sailing through the western Mediterranean, according to data from tracking websites. Last week, Reuters reported that US authorities are mulling actions against Iran over the latter’s fuel shipments to Venezuela. The Trump administration has targeted Venezuela with crushing economic sanctions, including an oil embargo blocking fuel exports to the Caribbean country as well as a blanket ban on dealings with Venezuelan state entities.

Rally: End Sanctions, Save Lives! No US Sponsored Attacks On Venezuela!

Saturday, a group of activists from the Latin America Solidarity Coalition of WMASS, Green Rainbow Party Pioneer Valley Chapter, Western Massachusetts Codepink, and Massachusetts Peace Action demonstrated on the Coolidge Bridge in Northampton calling for an end to US the sanctions against Venezuela, and an end to US sponsored coup d’états and mercenaries attacks of Venezuela in an attempt to assassinate President Maduro. In a statement to the press the organizers of the demonstration said: On May 3, 2020, more than 100 heavily armed mercenaries employed by an American contractor, a US Green Berets veteran, landed in several locations on the Venezuelan coast. The mercenaries arrived in heavily armed boats from Colombia where they had been training for the past five months.

Imperialism And COVID-19

We are not in this together. The divisions that run through our society going into the COVID-19 crisis have only been heightened. Racialized workers are seeing higher rates of infections and deaths because they disproportionately work in low-paying frontline jobs. Women, racialized, migrant and low-wage workers have disproportionately been impacted by the closure of the economy through job losses and the loss of public services such as schools.  Just as the COVID-19 crisis exposes and deepens inequality at the national level, so too does the crisis play out on the international level. The virus, first confronted in China, has seen its deadliest form in Europe and the United States. The epicentre of the virus seems to be the richest nations on the planet.

US And Iran Making Moves Toward De-escalation

Almost simultaneously, Iran started to withdraw its Revolutionary Guards from Syria — according to Israeli media leaks and western media confirmation — while the US started to withdraw its Patriot missiles from Saudi Arabia, return swarms of its air force jets back to their bases and announce the reduction of its naval presence in the Arabian Sea and Gulf. Iran has not yet acknowledged its sudden move in Syria. However, Washington has said that Tehran no longer constitutes a threat to the security of the United States, Israel or Saudi Arabia; that is the justification for the withdrawal of US forces from the Kingdom. On a related issue, sources say that a prisoner exchange deal between Tehran and Washington is almost ready at last. Ali Rabiei, a spokesman for the Iranian government, has expressed his country’s willingness to conduct a full exchange of prisoners with the United States with no need for any mediation by a third party.

Defying US Sanctions, Iran Tanker To Deliver Fuel To Venezuela

A fuel tanker loaded at the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas is making its way to Venezuela, according to vessel tracking data issued by Refinitiv Icon, in defiance of the US-imposed sanctions on both countries, including on their respective oil industries. Venezuela, which is already in a crisis, is currently suffering from a shortage of gasoline. The Iranian-flagged tanker “Clafel” reportedly crossed the Suez Canal yesterday, having been loaded with fuel in Iran at the end of March. The Venezuelan-owned PDVSA oil company and the country’s Ministry of Oil did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment, nor has the US State Department. Haaretz also reports that four other vessels of the same size, each flagged by Iran and originating from the same port, are due to cross the Atlantic Ocean, with their final destinations not established.

The Violence Of Non-Violence: Canadian Sanctions Policy In Times Of COVID-19

While there is no shortage of evidence for the economic, social, and health effects of sanctions, both state and nonstate actors – among the latter, many ostensibly averse to the use of military force – neglect, when not altogether ignore, the devastation caused by sanctions. Take, for instance, the case of sanctions on Venezuela: the policy has frozen assets, banned banks from transactions, and impeded the sale of oil, Venezuela’s main source of income, making the purchase of essential goods such as food and medicine all but impossible, thus targeting not only the Venezuelan government but the entire population.

The White Lobby: When The U.S. Was Sanctions-Buster Extraordinaire

The bullet holes were what stuck with me.  I visited the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina during the summer of 2016, at the head of the West Point civil rights history staff ride - a two week trip across the American South for select cadets in my classes.  It had only been a year since the young white supremacist Dylan Roof had murdered nine people at the famed historically black church.  So it was eery to attend the very same evening prayer session that he’d shot up and glimpse the persistent pocked marked evidence on the walls.  Much was later made of Roof’s web posts, particularly his ubiquitous photos with Confederate iconography.  These set off a welcome national debate on the display of the secessionist battle flag and other southern civil war symbols.

Boston May Day 2020 Car Rally

The Massachusetts Peace Action, MAPA, organized a car rally in Boston today to support national and international solidarity as the COVID-19 pandemic rages around the globe.  More than 50 cars participated in the rally. The impact of the Corona-19 pandemic has been overwhelming in our country. It has been especially devastating for the poor and for Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities. At the same time, wealthy elites value their profits more than people's lives.  Now is the time to imagine and act together for reorganizing society around the needs of all the people, especially of the poor and working people. We invite you to join us and magnify the potential impact of this message by distributing it and acting similarly locally and globally. Join us in support of the U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres call to waive “the sanctions imposed on countries to ensure access to food, essential health supplies, and COVID-19 medical support.

An Inside View Of Venezuela’s Resistance To US Imperialism

On Thursday, April 23 2020, Popular Resistance, in conjunction with Black Alliance for Peace, US Peace Council, United National Antiwar Coalition, the Alliance for Global Justice, CODEPINK, the International Action Center and the Sanctions Kill campaign held a webinar, "An Inside View of Venezuela's Resistance to US Imperialism and How to Build International Solidarity." The speakers were Carlos Ron, the Venezuelan Vice Foreign Minister for North America, Ajamu Baraka of Black Alliance for Peace, and Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers of Popular Resistance. Bahman Azad of the US Peace Council moderated the event. Below is the full video and a transcript of Carlo Ron's remarks.

Sanctioned Countries Are Now Leading The World In The Fight Against Coronavirus

After weeks of dismissing it as a liberal “hoax” designed to unseat the president, brushing the virus off as no big deal and under control, the Trump administration is clearly floundering in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite weeks of warning where it could have taken precautionary steps, the United States currently has four times the confirmed cases and twice the deaths of any other country. At the same time, the countries it is currently placing under economic siege, totaling around a quarter of the world’s population, are faring far better and leading the global fight against the coronavirus. China, for instance, the first epicenter of the outbreak, has managed to slow its new COVID-19 cases to a trickle, reopening for business after losing 4,632 people – a number that, in the context of a stark April reality, appears impressively low.

Car Caravan To End US Sanctions And Show Global Solidarity

On April 20, 2020, about twenty cars joined a rally in the streets of downtown Northampton, Massachusetts calling for national and international solidarity as we face the Covid-19 pandemic. Signs were placed on cars calling for an end to the US sanctions on Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, and North Korea; to allow Cuban medical staff and medicine to enter our country to help fight the Coronavirus pandemic and save lives; to end the blockade of Gaza; to bail out people not corporations; and to fund Medicare for all, not endless wars and the military-industrial complex. The rally was organized by The Latin America Solidarity Coalition of Western Massachusetts together with the Resistance Center for Peace & Justice of Northampton, and co-sponsored by Code Pink of Western Massachusetts and...

Letter From Berlin: The Moment Has Come For A Global Ceasefire

Against the backdrop of the widening corona pandemic, we support the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General to reach a global ceasefire. An idea that is now supported by at least 70 countries. At the same time, we agree with the demands of numerous governments and organizations for the end of the sanctions policy, which now affects almost a third of humanity. Venezuela, Cuba, Syria, Nicaragua, Iran, Palestine, Yemen, North Korea and Zimbabwe were already severely affected by the sanctions before the pandemic, and the situation has now deteriorated even further. But other countries, especially Russia, are also subject to an increasingly aggressive sanctions policy. Many countries are now in need of debt cancellation. Because currently over 800 million people worldwide are suffering from hunger.
