Black Student Unions Are Under Pressure

Black student unions have been a vital part of many Black college students’ lives for more than 60 years. But since 2024, Black student unions have lost their institutional support, campus space and funding with the rise of anti-diversity, equity and inclusion laws in Utah and Alabama. Black student unions now face a new wave of pressure, as more than 400 colleges and universities under the Trump administration have rebranded or eliminated programs and centers that promote diversity, equity and inclusion. Amy Lieberman, education editor at The Conversation U.S., spoke with Antar A. Tichavakunda, a scholar of race and higher education, to better understand what Black student unions are and how they influence Black students’ experiences in higher education.

It’s increasingly obvious that the US military threats against Venezuela have a wider agenda. Their game plan is regime change, but not only in Venezuela. This is the objective – on a longer timescale in some cases – across several of the countries in the Caribbean Basin, aiming to cleanse the region of governments deemed undesirable to Washington. As international relations professor at the University of Chicago, John Mearsheimer reminds us, the US “does not tolerate left-leaning governments…and as soon as they see a government that is considered to be left-of-center they move to replace that government.”

Ukraine Agrees To US-Sponsored Deal To End War With Russia

The Ukrainian government has “agreed to a peace deal” to end the nearly three-year war between Moscow and Kiev, a US official told CBS News on 25 November. “The Ukrainians have agreed to the peace deal. There are some minor details to be sorted out, but they have agreed to a peace deal,” the US official said. Ukrainian National Security Advisor Rustem Umerov also said that an understanding has been reached, expressing optimism that Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky would travel to the US by the end of November in order to finalize the deal.

More than two years into the genocide in Palestine, the UN Security Council has finally acted. But rather than acting to enforce international law, protect the victims, and hold the perpetrators accountable, it adopted a resolution that openly flouts key provisions of international law, disempowers and further punishes the victims, and rewards and empowers the perpetrators.  Most disturbingly, it hands control of Gaza and the survivors of the genocide over to the United States, a co-perpetrator of the genocide, and provides for the participation of the Israeli regime in decision making.

US Calls On Ukraine To Make Concessions For Peace With Russia

The US is requesting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept a US-drafted deal to end the war with Russia that includes Kiev giving up “territory and some weapons,” Reuters reported on 19 November. Citing two anonymous sources familiar with the matter, the news agency stated that the proposals included reducing the size of the Ukrainian military, among other things. US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is leading the US effort to draft the plan and is working closely with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, a US official stated.

When Reggie Williams turned 18 two decades ago, his mother entrusted him with his birth certificate. Keep it on you at all times, she advised, in case you encounter police. On a recent afternoon, he had a copy in his wallet, along with his state ID, as he walked from his uptown apartment in Memphis, Tennessee, to a nearby corner store. A Memphis Police Department cruiser pulled up, and two officers questioned him: Where was he coming from? Where was he going? Williams responded, and the interrogation continued: Did he have any weapons on him? No. Any drugs? No. When asked to empty his pockets, the 39-year-old artist turned over his wallet and phone. Minutes later, four men poured out of an unmarked SUV with tinted windows. They carried rifles and wore body armor — but no identifying badges.

The US military has extrajudicially killed 80 people in 20 strikes that have destroyed 21 boats, in aerial strikes off the coast of Venezuela. With outrage in response to these murders and significant U.S. military buildup near Venezuela, an urgent and coordinated week of action for Venezuela from November 15-23 started yesterday, with over 50 actions across the US and a growing international response. The demonstrations, organized by over 35 organizations forming a rapid response network, are demanding no war on Venezuela, the withdrawal of the U.S. military from the Caribbean, and the establishment of a "Zone of Peace" across the hemisphere.

President Trump aspires to be seen as a peacemaker—boasting about ending wars—yet his administration continues enabling and waging aggressive military campaigns in Gaza, Iran, and beyond, while repressing dissent at home. Despite this, countries such as Israel and Pakistan have stated their intentions to nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize. This dangerous framing narrows peace to mean a pause in fighting or a shift in military power, ignoring the deeper truth that peace requires justice, dignity, and human security.

If Trump Sells Student Loan Portfolio, Paths To Debt Cancellation Could Close

Trump administration officials are once again exploring the possibility of selling portions of the federal government’s $1.6 trillion student loan portfolio, held by about 45 million borrowers, according to recent reporting by Politico. Federal law dictates that such a sale cannot cost taxpayers any money. But, as Eileen Connor, executive director of the Project on Predatory Student Lending, told Politico, executing a deal that benefits both taxpayers and borrowers is nearly impossible. The federal government enjoys extraordinary powers of collection that private lenders do not — such as garnishing tax refunds, disability benefits, and Social Security payments. Absent those collection methods, private lenders make money through higher interest rates and longer repayment plans.

Among those worried about the agency’s future — and their own — are the 100,000 former service members who comprise one-third of the workforce in the largest public health care system in the country. These veterans work at nearly 1,400 VA-run hospitals and clinics nationwide. Every day, they help the nine million men and women who have service-related medical conditions or qualify for VA coverage because of financial need or recent deployment in combat zones.

At a press conference Tuesday, Sheinbaum dismissed reports of a proposed US military operation against drug trafficking on Mexican soil and asserted her government would not permit it under any circumstances. “That’s not going to happen. We have no reports that that’s going to happen, and we disagree with it, and we’ve made that clear to President Trump,” the head of state said in response to a report published the previous day by NBC News. Sheinbaum recalled that both countries signed a bilateral agreement Sept. 3 following a meeting at the National Palace with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She emphasized the deal is based on non-negotiable principles.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic announced on Monday that the 10th Summit of the Americas, scheduled for early December, has been postponed due to deep regional differences that are hindering discussions. A new date was not provided. According to a statement, the decision followed a “detailed analysis of the political and social situation in the region” and was “reached in consensus with key partners, including the United States, the forum’s main driving force,” along with the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), who supported the postponement.
