New Initiative Launches To Decentralize The Internet, Empower People

D-CENT is a Europe-wide project creating privacy-aware tools and applications for direct democracy and economic empowerment. Together with the citizens and developers, we are creating a decentralised social networking platform for large-scale collaboration and decision-making. The initiative, D-CENT (Decentralised Citizens ENgagement Technologies), backed by the European Commission, will see the development of new open source, decentralized and privacy-aware digital tools and applications for direct democratic and economic empowerment. Together with citizens, social movements, and developers, D-CENT is creating a distributed social networking platform for large-scale collaboration to solve social problems and allow full citizen participation in the democratic process. The project will study possible implementations of liquid democracy: collective deliberation, decision-making, and the pros and cons of proxy voting.

Protester Interrupts Media Reporting On Obama Fundraiser

A scuffle between a very loud protestor, a CBS crew member, and reporter Jay Levine interrupted broadcasts on two networks yesterday, prompting mounted police to secure the scene. The protester was able to get in front of the camera as the media was reporting on a fundraiser for President Obama in Chicago. Levine was reporting on President Obama's Chicago visit when the protestor rushed him, grabbing the microphone and yelling, "Obama is a war criminal." Although the CBS feed cut off at that point, NBC Chicago's Mary Ann Ahern was standing nearby and captured the rest of the action. Levine, with the aid of three mounted police officers, was able to finish his report.

‘Disobedience 2014’: Mass Protest To End Austerity In Spain

Thousands gathered in the center of Barcelona in an event the organizers dubbed “Disobedience 2014”in protest of government austerity measures. The protesters marched under a large banner saying:“Disobedience 2014. They can’t control us if we disobey. Let’s stop [Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon’s] laws!” The demonstration turned violent when the police moved in to try and stop protesters from reaching Barcelona’s Cataluna Square. Activists tussled with police, while others smashed the windows of banks and financial institutions and set fire to bins. The idea behind the demonstration is to protest austerity and cuts through “acts of mass civil disobedience,” one of the organizers told Spanish newspaper La Nacion. “Through disobedience we will rebel against a system that is dragging us into an abyss and replace it with one that respects people,” said Luis Lopez who was holding a flag representing a Spanish anarchist group.

Taiwan’s Sunflower Student Revolution

On March 18, thousands of Taiwanese students occupied Taiwan's Legislative Yuan. A few days later, hundreds more took the Executive Yuan, before police violently evicted them, even going so far as using water cannons. They call themselves the Sunflower Revolution. Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has pushed forward a trade deal with China called the Trade in Services Agreement that many in Taiwan feel will give the Chinese Communist Party control over the island, eroding away their hard won democracy, freedoms, and human rights. But Ma sees it as vital to maintain Taiwan's competitive edge in the international market and if they go back on the agreement, it will damage their credibility as a trading partner. But with the CCP gradually encroaching on Hong Kong using similar economic soft power, will Taiwan be next? Find out on this episode of China Uncensored.

US Attorney Locks Door To Avoid Anti-Drone Activists

Members of NCNR first brought a criminal complaint against President Obama, CIA Director John Brennan, and others at the CIA who are involved in the drone program to the US Attorney’s office in Alexandria last May when Neil MacBride held the office of US Attorney. After numerous attempts to follow-up on the complaint, no action was apparently taken. A copy of the criminal complaint was then sent to the new US Attorney Dana Boente last week. On Tuesday March 25 six members of NCNR followed up at the US Attorney’s office in person to demand action as drone attacks continue to murder innocent people around the world. NCNR maintains that the Obama Administration and the CIA drone program are in violation of U.S. and international law. When the six activists arrived at the US Attorney’s office at 11:00 am they discovered the doors to the public building were locked. A security officer, John Buffington, came out and told them that they would not be allowed into the building.

Video: Does The U.S. Want War With Russia?

“Is Russia urging Quebec to secede from Canada so that the province can join a military alliance led by Moscow? Evidently not. That would be comparable, and yet mild compared to the recent U.S. gambit led by Victoria Nuland aimed at bringing Ukraine into the Western orbit. (…) Russia professes no hostile ideology, and only seeks normal relations with the West. What more can it do? It is up to Americans to come to their senses.” - Diana Johnstone, Counterpunch

Massive Anti-Austerity Protest In Spain

Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards rallied in Madrid on Saturday against poverty and EU-imposed austerity in a largely peaceful protest later marred by violent clashes in which police fired rubber bullets. Central government representative Cristina Cifuentes said 19 protesters had been arrested and 50 police officers had been injured, one of them very badly, in the clashes. The so-called "Dignity Marches" brought hundreds of thousands to the capital, according to estimates of Reuters witnesses. Travelling from all over Spain, they were protesting in support of more than 160 different causes, including jobs, housing, health, education and an end to poverty. Banners urged the conservative government not to pay its international debts and to tackle Spain's chronically high unemployment of 26 percent. "Bread, jobs and housing for everyone", read one banner, "Corruption and robbery, Spain's trademark," said another.

Video: Protesting Illegal in Australia?

Sean Bedlam (interviewed here) is a comedian, artist and activist based in Melbourne. An active member of Occupy Melbourne and other social justice campaigns, Sean states “activists in Australia are reaching out to people all over the world, particularly in America, because Australia is a client state of the United States (while at the same time) we are reaching out to the Indigenous people of Australia, the first nations, and that has become a burning central issue. Now, the powers that be know that if we are making contact with the powers that be around the world and if we are making contact with indigenous Australians, you’ve got an incredibly powerful network, and they don’t want the network to form."

Edward Snowden: Here’s How We Take Back The Internet

Appearing by telepresence robot, Edward Snowden speaks at TED2014 about surveillance and Internet freedom. The right to data privacy, he suggests, is not a partisan issue, but requires a fundamental rethink of the role of the internet in our lives — and the laws that protect it. "Your rights matter,” he says, "because you never know when you're going to need them." Chris Anderson interviews, with special guest Tim Berners-Lee. In 2013 Edward Snowden leaked thousands of classified American National Security Agency documents, sparking a global conversation about citizens' rights to privacy on the Internet.

Video: Fukushima Three Years Later – Who is Responsible?

March 11 marks the three-year anniversary of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. It's considered the worst nuclear accident on record since the 1986 meltdown at Chernobyl. Many questions remain unanswered, not the least of which is: did the Japanese government participate in a coverup on the true nature of the accident; and the power plant's operator, TEPCO, whether or not their ability to repair the damage was done effectively. Nuclear power engineer Arnie Gunderson and journalist Chiho Kaneko discuss a lawsuit to hold General Electric and other reactor manufacturing companies responsible and the Japanese public's attitude toward nuclear energy.

In this exclusive report, Laura Gottesdiener the author of A Dream Foreclosed: Black America and the Fight for a Place to Call Home, pulls back the curtain on a massive land grab that has once again turned our homes into dangerous financial products and reports on the growing movement of tenants and housing advocates are fighting back driven by a conviction that housing is not a market commodity, but a human right.

Students to Obama: Take Our Future Seriously, Scrub Keystone Pipeline

More than a thousand students descended on Washington, DC this weekend as part of a campaign called XL Dissent. They believe that Keystone XL could mean “environmental devastation” for their generation, and they’re demonstrating a willingness to draw a line in the sand when it comes to the issue of climate change. There are higher risks in transporting the crude from the Alberta tar sands than most forms of oil, and it would pass over water aquifers and through lands belonging to First Nations. Most importantly, critics say that greenhouse gas emissions from this source of dirty energy will be “game over” for the climate. Gathering at Georgetown University on early Sunday morning, students from more than 80 colleges around the country headed toward the White House. But first, they stopped by the Secretary of State’s house on O Street, where they created a pseudo-oil spill with a black tarp.
