Wars and Militarism

Despite Anti-Trump Mandate, Canada’s New PM Pushes ‘Golden Dome’

For just $61 billion, Canada can get in on Donald Trump’s latest scheme: a space-based North American missile defense system that Trump has called the “Golden Dome.” Trump posted the amount of money he would expect Canada to pay on his Truth Social account on May 27 — the same day that King Charles was in Ottawa to read the Speech from the Throne to open a new session of Parliament. Trump told Canadians that if Canada became the 51th state, the cost of being part of the program would drop to zero — something that Global News reports that the Prime Minister’s Office had not heard from Trump. Trump’s plan revives a version of Ronald Reagan’s spaced-based missile plan, popularly known as “Star Wars.”

War In Our Time

Friedrich Merz has been in office as Germany’s new chancellor a matter of weeks, and already he has the German capital aflutter with worry about the increasing danger of a third world war. More to the point, while Germans are fearful of such a prospect, the Russians are warning of it. In a series of recent remarks, notably on German television, Merz has stopped just short of stating that he intends to authorize supplies of German-made ballistic missiles to Ukraine and to do so without imposing restrictions on the Kiev regime’s use of them to attack Russian territory. This is a tripwire for Moscow, as Merz cannot possibly fail to see.

Roads To War: The EU’s Security Action For Europe Fund

As the world was readying for the Second World War, the insightful humane Austrian author Stefan Zweig made the following glum observation: “Openly and flagrantly, certain countries express their will to expand and make preparations for war. The politics of rearmament is pursued in broad daylight and at breakneck speed; every day you read in the papers arguments in favour of armaments expansion, the idea that it reduces unemployment and provides a boost to the stock exchange.” This is not so different from the approval by European Union countries on May 27 of a €150 billion loan program known as the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) borrowing scheme.

Hundreds Of Millions Are Dying Of Hunger

I have written this newsletter before. In fact, I could write this newsletter every year when a new Global Report on Food Crises is published. The report rests on four points: The number of people who are hungry is greater now than last year. The amount of food produced this year is greater than that produced last year. There is enough food to feed the total world population, and more. How do we explain why people are hungry? Let’s add in the data. Point no. 1: 733 million people faced chronic hunger in 2023, according to studies from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), World Food Programme, World Health Organisation, International Fund for Agricultural Development, and United Nations Children’s Fund.

Netanyahu Threatening To Upend US-Iran Talks By Attacking Iran

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is threatening to upend negotiations between the US and Iran by potentially attacking Iranian nuclear facilities. The report said that the threat from Israel led to a recent tense phone call between Netanyahu and President Trump and a series of meetings between senior US and Israeli officials in recent days. Trump was asked by reporters on Wednesday if he warned Netanyahu against attacking Iran during a phone call last week, and said, “Well, I’d like to be honest. Yes, I did.” “It’s not a warning. I said I don’t think it’s appropriate.

15 Years Ago I Was On A Gaza Flotilla Mission That Ended In 10 Dead And 50 Wounded By Israeli Commandos

Fifteen years ago, in May 2010, I was one of approximately 700 persons that sailed on 7 unarmed civilian ships to break the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza and bring needed food, medicines and materials to Palestinians in Gaza who were suffering under the brutal, inhumane policies enacted by the Israeli government, which included a naval, land and air blockade of Gaza. These policies included “putting Palestinians on a diet” by reducing the caloric intake of persons living in Gaza by allowing a much reduce number of trucks carrying food into Gaza.  I don’t think 15 years ago, we could have predicted the cruelty of the Israeli government as it now conducts the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians living in the West Bank.

Think Tank Behind Project 2025 Just Published Trump’s Iran War Plan

Flying under the media radar, the Heritage Foundation—a think tank widely viewed as the intellectual engine behind the Trump administration’s foreign policy agenda—has published a brief that appears to map out the president’s prospective approach to Iran. The six-page document advocates ending nuclear negotiations and pursuing joint U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Though thinly veiled as a policy analysis, the brief reads more like a soft launch for a war strategy. Heritage has long played a predictive role in Trump-era foreign policy. Its reports and recommendations often find their way into official doctrine, especially on issues involving Israel and Iran.

Disarming Europe: Steps Towards Building A Continent Of Peace

The building of a broad anti-war and disarmament movement in Italy continues, as trade unions and left groups prepare for June 21 – the planned date of a national demonstration against Europe’s ongoing armament agenda. In the lead-up to the event, the political party Potere al Popolo organized meetings under the slogan “Let’s Disarm Them!” in both Naples and Rome during the weekend of May 24–25. With international guests including Ione Belarra from Podemos, Clémence Guetté from France Unbowed, and Marc Botenga from the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB-PVDA), the meetings aimed to highlight key priorities for a national and regional peace movement to rally around.

A Week Long Drone Fight Which Russia Is Winning

Over the last seven days the Ukrainian military has launched over one thousand drones against targets in Russia. Most of these were shot down by Russian air defenses. There are no reports of any serious damage. The biggest effect the week long drone attacks achieved was to shut down air traffic in Moscow for several hours. After waiting a few days the Russian military responded in kind. Over the last three days a record number of drones and missiles were launched against military installations and production facilities in Ukraine (archived): Russia stepped up missile-and-drone assaults on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and other regions, killing at least 12 people overnight into Sunday after President Trump last week declined to impose further sanctions on Moscow over its refusal to halt its invasion.

Trump’s Golden Dome: Star Wars Is Back

Today the Military Industrial Complex is marching towards world dominance through space technology on behalf of global corporate interests. To understand how and why the space program will be used to fight all future wars on Earth from space, it's important to understand how the public has been misled about the origins and true purpose of the space program. Trump calls for a renewal of Ronald Reagan's 1980's vision of SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative), popularly called Star Wars. The program is a massive boondoggle in the works. Early estimates are that Trump's 'Golden Dome' would cost from $500 billion to trillions of dollars.

Veterans Reflect On The Meaning Of Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend, Veterans For Peace is calling on its members and friends to reflect on the gravity of the day, whose official purpose is to “honor all those who died in service to the U.S. during peacetime and war.” Veterans For Peace chooses to honor ALL who have died in wars, both combatants and civilians. Our hope is that a sober accounting of the casualties of war will mitigate against the tendency to turn Memorial Day – like Veterans Day – into a patriotic celebration of U.S. militarism. We remember the words of President Eisenhower, who during World War II, was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe: "War is a grim, cruel business, a business justified only as a means of sustaining the forces of good against those of evil". He also famously stated, "I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”

US Quietly Moves Bombers As Israel Prepares To Hit Iran

As threats of an Israeli strike on Iran grow louder, the United States is making quiet but unmistakable moves of its own. Over the past month, Washington has quietly repositioned strategic bombers and fighter squadrons to Diego Garcia, a remote U.S. military outpost in the Indian Ocean, squarely within striking distance of Tehran. The official rationale is force protection. But the scale and nature of the deployments have sparked speculation that Washington is laying the groundwork for potential military involvement in an Israeli-led operation, or, at the very least, sending a message to Tehran that it won’t stand in the way.

The United States Is Sabotaging A Nuclear Agreement With Iran

The Trump administration, which unilaterally withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Agreement during Donald Trump's first term, claims to be negotiating a new nuclear agreement with Iran. However, 'negotiations' are taking place under an escalation of economic coercive measures, a.k.a. sanctions, and military threats. Bahman Azad, president of the US Peace Council, delves into the hidden intentions of the Trump administration and the changes to Iran's foreign policy under its new president. Azad also explains what is happening in the context of the rise of the multipolar world and the decline of US hegemony, and what we can do in the United States to promote security and peace, as Israel and the US prepare for war.

A Language Of Blood Has Gripped Our World

Over the past weeks, international focus has no doubt been on the escalation between India and Pakistan, which we will write more about once the dust settles. Though none of the armies crossed the border or the Line of Control, concern is nonetheless understandable: both countries wield nuclear weapons in their arsenal. Now, there has effectively been a return to the ceasefire of 1948, which has lingered in the decades since without a proper and full peace treaty. International attention has also rightly remained on the genocide in Palestine, with Israelis tightening the total siege on Gaza, perhaps as vengeance for Palestinians’ return to northern Gaza on 27 January 2025 in total defiance of the genocidal war.

Ansarallah Leader Says US War Failed To Stop Yemen

The leader of the Ansarallah resistance movement, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, stated during a televised speech on 8 May that Yemen will continue supporting Palestine against Israel's ethnic cleansing campaign. “Our country has resumed its full stance – militarily, officially, and popularly – to support the Palestinian people since the resumption of the genocide,” Houthi said, emphasizing that the Yemeni position is “firm and comprehensive regarding support, whether through bombing deep inside occupied Palestine or the ban on Israeli ships.”
