Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston Arrested On Capitol Hill Protesting For Green New Deal

It appears Jane Fonda is good for her word. The actress and political activist said she would hold demonstrations on Capitol Hill every Friday through January to demand action on the climate crisis. Sure enough, Fonda was arrested for demonstrating a second Friday in a row Oct. 18, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Only this time, her Grace and Frankie co-star Sam Waterston joined her. The two actors were arrested with 15 other people demanding a Green New Deal, a plan to transition the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030 while promoting green jobs and greater equality.

#ShutdownDC: District Brought To Standstill Over Inaction On Climate Emergency

Washington, DC — Over two dozen environmental and justice groups coordinated a massive shutdown of twenty major locations in the District, snarling traffic and business operations and creating chaos for commuters as they brought the nation’s capital to near gridlock. The unprecedented action involved a series of coordinated nonviolent civil disobedience actions which included blockades of key freeway ramps, a yacht launch on K Street, a van blockade and multiple demonstrations with sit-ins on city streets.

Three Takeaways From The Historic D.C. Statehood Hearing

The House of Representatives held the first hearing on D.C. statehood since 1993. The point of the hearing was to jump-start the process to vote on (and likely pass) H.R. 51, which would make the District the 51st state. Dozens of statehood advocates were inside the hearing, including Barbara Mitchell who arrived at Capitol Hill around 7 a.m. and was one of the first in line.   Fittingly, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton oversaw the statehood hearing because House Oversight Committee Chairman, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), wasn’t able to make it.  “Statehood would give D.C. residents equal democratic rights,” said Holmes Norton at the start of the hearing, adding that H.R.51 has 220 co-sponsors but none are Republicans.

Meet The Group Making DC Streets Safer Through Do-It-Yourself Urbanism

The DC Department of Transformation—not to be confused with the District Department of Transportation—is helping cyclists and pedestrians one plunger, or traffic cone, or ad hoc handstand, at a time. What started off as a Twitter account aimed at rectifying problems with city infrastructure, @DCDOTRA has grown into a prime example of tactical urbanism. And the great thing is: Anyone can participate. I talked to the founder of the account (who will remain anonymous by their request—many of their projects are not technically legal) about what DC DOTRA is doing...

Extinction Rebellion Marches On The Capital

Washington, DC, July 9 – Around 100 people representing the climate group Extinction Rebellion marched unpermitted for one mile from the Spirit of Justice Park to the east side of the Capitol grounds. The march took place after the crowd held a People’s Congress to pass the resolution calling for the declaration of a climate emergency. What started out as a mild presence by the Capitol Police quickly escalated as the activists left the park and headed toward the Capitol building. As the march turned onto Independence Avenue, the full extent of the police force gathered to address the protest came into view. A caravan of large police vans, including wagons meant to house arrested activists, lined the block of Independence and First Street SW to Independence & First Street SE (about a half mile long).

DC Transgender Community Fighting For Equality 50 Years After Stonewall

Washington, DC – Members of the transgender community led a rally on Friday afternoon at Freedom Plaza, marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising on Christopher Street in New York City. About a dozen transgender organizers and activists delivered a petition to DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office and the City Council, demanding passage of the Community Safety and Health Amendment Act of 2019. The rally was led by advocacy group No Justice No Pride, HIPS (Sex Workers Advocates Coalition)...

Packing A Projector: U.S. Activists Stage Light Invasion

WASHINGTON, June 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The plan of action was nothing new; its outcome was. Soon after sundown, the activists made for the heart of the U.S. capital, set up a powerful projector then shone a giant, illuminated message onto the dim flank of a government building. "Discrimination is wrong" read the giant letters projected onto the side of a Congressional office building. What happened next was a first for the activists and helped ignite debate about whether light projection equals trespass.

Meet The DC Tenants’ Advocacy Group Taking A Stand… For Regime Change And War

The Embassy Protection Collective swallowed a lot of tough pills over its month-long stint to keep the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, DC out of the hands of wealthy opposition expats. But somehow this one stung more than usual. Embassy protectors had spent at least two weeks surrounded on all sides by dozens of pro-Juan Guaidó fanatics blaring airhorns, shining high powered lasers in their eyes, and physically assaulting anyone who attempted to deliver food or water to them. And then, the Trump administration had ordered PEPCO to remove power to the building.

Anti-War Activists Protest Eviction Of Venezuela Embassy Protectors

Around 200 people marched and then gathered at the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 18, to show solidarity with Venezuela and the last of the embassy protectors, who had been forcibly removed from the embassy by police two days earlier. For 36 days, anti-war activists and journalists in the U.S. had been staying inside the embassy to prevent the U.S. from installing agents of right-wing pretender to Venezuela’s presidency Juan Guaidó.

80 Arrested In Nation’s Capital At Disability Rights Protest

Dozens of disability rights activists — including some in wheelchairs — were arrested near Capitol Hill while pressing for more access to community-based services. U.S. Capitol Police arrested 80 people who were demonstrating Monday morning outside the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The protesters were with the disability rights group ADAPT. They were seeking a meeting with Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar to ask that he support adequate funding for Medicaid...

Letter To The DC Metropolitan Police Department

It is not credible to disclaim knowledge of the extensive instances of misconduct over the past week at the Venezuelan Embassy. Repeatedly, the MPD has allowed physical assaults, threats and menacing by right-wing violent thugs against peaceful persons, has allowed them to incommode and block passage on the public sidewalks, has allowed their use of eye-damaging high beam lights and strobes to be shined into peace activists' eyes at close proximity, and their use of high volume blast sirens and horns placed directly against the ears of peace activists.

Six Arrested At Good Friday Witness At Pentagon

From Holy Thursday afternoon to Good Friday afternoon, about 20 people gathered in Washington, D.C. for a Faith and Resistance retreat and public witness that was organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker and held at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church. Those who participated in the retreat/witness were members of Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, Jonah House, the Atlantic Life Community and students from Loras College from Iowa.

Washington Walks Away From Another Treaty

Please see this new short video about Washington pulling out of the INF Treaty with Russia.  This treaty was signed in 1987 between Reagan and Gorbachev.  It banned medium range nuclear weapons from being deployed in Europe. Trump claims that Russia is violating the treaty.  The US has been encircling Russia with medium range (nuclear capable) missiles for years.  The US pulled out of the ABM Treaty in 2002 which banned so-called ‘missile defense’ deployments and they’ve been on steroids since.

Extinction Rebellion Climate Activists Block DC Streets

Washington —“Rest in peace to the birds and trees,” chanted a group on Saturday calling themselves Extinction Rebellion. “Rest in peace to you and me.” What researchers have dubbed the sixth mass extinction has activists scrambling to save a crumbling biosphere and make species preservation a central tenant of the emerging climate justice movement. One such group, Extinction Rebellion, first drew thousands to London on Oct. 31 to highlight environmental devastation, pollution and species loss. Blocking bridges and sitting-in on the Houses of Parliament, Extinction Rebellion now boasts chapters in 35 countries around the world, including 30 in the U.S..

Extinction Rebellion Convenes ‘People’s Congress’ At U.S. Capitol

Washington, DC—The release this fall of several new reports on the effects of climate change has given a new sense of urgency to the climate movement. Even though some say the reports may still be too conservative in their findings, scientists finally seem to be hitting the panic button, concluding that the next decade is humanity’s last chance to avert the most dire effects of climate change. Worse news piles upon bad. The emissions targets set forth in the Paris Agreement won’t achieve the goal of limiting warming to 2° C,  and few countries are keeping their commitments anyway. Even worse, the 2° C goal is too high to begin with; the IPCC report makes the case that there’s a big difference between 1.5°  and 2° C of warming...
