In recent weeks, students Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk, and Alireza Doroudi were abducted by ICE and are being held in ICE detention centers in rural Louisiana. Khalil’s powerful statement connects multiple realities that demonstrate how state repression is activated to support the rise of authoritarianism.
That Khalil and others are being sent to detention centers in remote towns across Louisiana is not an accident. Rising authoritarianism requires a police state, and the expansion of prisons, police, and detention centers is extremely profitable. As the current U.S. government disappears people to a brutal prison camp in El Salvador, they are also moving people to rural Louisiana in attempts to disappear people within the United States borders.

Avelo Airlines has entered into a controversial agreement with US immigration authorities to operate deportation flights, sparking protests from coast to coast. Activists, legal organizations, and local communities are mobilizing against the carrier’s role in deportations. The controversy reflects a broader reckoning with the US’s long and bipartisan history of immigration enforcement. Avelo Airlines started off flying gamblers in 1989 as Casino Express. Rebranded in 2005 as Xtra Airlines, it provided air transport for the Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign among other ventures. Current CEO and former United Airlines CFO Andrew Levy acquired the carrier in 2021, renamed it Avelo, and expanded from charter flights to low-cost commercial operations.

Around 100 officers from the UAE-backed National Resistance Forces (NRF) in Yemen have defected to join Ansar Allah, delivering a major blow to U.S. and Gulf-backed efforts inside the country. The development comes amid threats of a U.S.-supported ground offensive and intensified American airstrikes against civilian targets.
On Sunday, approximately 100 officers from Yemen’s United Arab Emirates-backed forces defected to Ansar Allah in the capital, Sanaa. Although the defectors’ identities have not been publicly disclosed, initial reports suggest that much of the group’s high command was among them.

In a region already on the brink, the latest violence in Indian-occupied Kashmir has intensified a decades-old conflict between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. The attack, which targeted Indian tourists in the Pahalgam valley, killing 26, has quickly escalated into a diplomatic and military standoff.
With India and Pakistan trading accusations and retaliatory measures, the potential for full-scale conflict is growing – especially as external players like the US and Israel loom over the situation, each with their own interests in fueling or containing the crisis.
A web of conspiracy and suspicion has surrounded the incident in Kashmir, with missing links complicating the narrative.

The recent Executive Order titled "Unleashing America’s Offshore Critical Minerals and Resources" marks a definitive rupture in the United States’ approach to global ocean governance. It is not merely a domestic administrative action—it is a declaration. This Executive Order signals that the U.S. government is prepared to bypass international agreements, challenge multilateralism, and unilaterally pursue deep seabed mining (DSM) in areas designated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the “common heritage of mankind.” By aligning state power with corporate ambition, this order effectively formalizes what had previously been speculative or tentative behavior—most notably, The Metals Company’s attempt to exploit legal ambiguity—and transforms it into a doctrine of sovereign overreach.

United States Attorney General Pam Bondi ended a Justice Department (DOJ) policy that explicitly discouraged federal prosecutors from forcing journalists to reveal their sources and other sensitive information, including information obtained from potential leaks.
With new guidelines, members of the news media who refuse to cooperate with prosecutors could be arrested for contempt. If accused of contempt, they could be fined or jailed.
The move by Bondi comes as Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has “referred” three alleged “intelligence leakers” to the DOJ for criminal prosecution.

The geopolitical dynamics of the Horn of Africa region are always volatile, but more so now than ever. The world’s attention is most drawn to the region by Ansar Allah’s disruption of crucial maritime routes in the Red Sea in support of Palestine and Donald Trump’s despicable proposal to remove and dump the entire population of Gaza in war-torn Sudan, Somalia, and/or Somaliland, the unrecognized Somali secessionist state.
Both the US and Israel have considered recognizing secessionist Somaliland as a state in order to turn it into a US/Israeli military enclave on the Gulf of Aden, near the mouth of the Red Sea and just across from Houthi-controlled Yemen.

“They just look at you like you’re nothing,” said a housekeeper from the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Buffalo, New York.
Sitting with me for a conversation in her East Side apartment, the housekeeper, who requested not to be named due to fear of retaliation, spoke of slashed hours and stagnant pay, arduous and unfair workloads, and racist treatment and verbal abuse from managers so severe that it has sent her running to the bathroom in tears.
But when she spoke about the belittling gaze of her employers — the feeling that immigrant workers like herself are seen as “nothing” by the hotel’s management – her words seemed to capture the deep nature of her grievances.

The third round of indirect nuclear talks between Iranian and US officials concluded on 26 April after several hours of meetings in the Omani capital, Muscat.
“The talks were much more serious than in the past, and we entered into more detailed and technical discussions. The presence of experts was useful,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is leading the Iranian delegation, told reporters following the talks.
"Positions were exchanged in writing several times. Overall, the atmosphere was quite serious and businesslike, and we stayed away from major discussions,” Araghchi added, stressing that the “businesslike” atmosphere created "hope for progress, although this is a cautious hope."

On Monday, the evening of April 21, Burkina Faso’s military authorities announced that they had dismantled a “major plot” aimed at promoting a coup and “sowing total chaos” in the West African country.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, who stated that the leaders of the coup attempt are allegedly based in Côte d’Ivoire, whose government under President Alassane Ouattara is allied with France’s interests in the region.
According to the minister, the plan of the “terrorists” would be carried out on April 16, 2025, through an assault on Burkina Faso’s presidency by soldiers recruited by the “enemies of the nation.”

Unifor National President Lana Payne no longer sees eye to eye with UAW leader Shawn Fain.
In a split with its Canadian sibling, the UAW endorsed President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on foreign-made vehicles and parts — the same tariffs Payne called “reckless and dangerous” for the entire integrated auto industry.
Payne told the Free Press on Thursday, the day a new round of tariffs took effect, that she hasn't met with Fain in “some time," adding that she isn't sure where he's getting his labor figures to support the pro-tariff stance.
“I don’t know that I would say we have common goals here. Unifor is opposed to these tariffs that the president of the United States is placing on the Canadian auto industry,” she said.

It is not that Trump’s economic policies improve upon his predecessors in the White House. Indeed there is every reason to believe that his tariffs and deep cuts to the federal workforce will dry up even more the buying power that is the lifeblood of a consumer economy. A second Great Depression is not out of the question. But our economic woes did not begin under Trump; the country was already on the wrong path. Trump merely hit the accelerator.
Said Desjon Yisrael, a 35-year-old African American who sells work boots and drives part-time for DoorDash to make ends meet near Greensboro, North Carolina:
“It’s the gig economy. It really baffles me that people think that the economy (was) doing really well (under Biden)."

Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the United States and Israel have been zealous in their efforts to disempower it. Israel has used its powerful hasbara (propaganda) machine to peddle absurdities about Tehran as a nuclear threat to the region and the world.
For refusing to bend to U.S.-Israeli demands to abandon the Palestinian cause and for standing against their hegemonic plans for the region, Iran has been the target of the most restrictive economic sanctions in history and under perpetual threat of military intervention.
Like any sovereign nation, Iran has a right to defend itself. Nuclear weapons are a security guarantee that Iran has not sought.

On Saturday, the United States and Iran will hold another round of talks in Muscat, the capital of Oman. The aim is to continue to advance talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
Thus far, the talks have gone well, but, as I have explained on several occasions recently, there are serious difficulties to overcome. These include the fact that Iran, having not pursued a nuclear weapons program to any degree since 2003, starts from a grudging position where it, justifiably, wonders why it should compromise over a non-issue. Meanwhile, the United States, which, along with Israel, has created a terrifying image of a nuclear-armed Iran, is pressing hard for unprecedented intrusiveness in monitoring Iran’s nuclear work.
