Petition Urges Obama Administration To Ban Natural Gas Exports

By Kate Colwell in Friends of the Earth - Environmental groups filed a groundbreaking legal petition with the U.S. Department of Commerce today seeking an immediate ban on natural gas exports from the United States, which have seen a dramatic surge on the heels of a fracking boom around the country. The U.S. Energy Policy and Conservation Act was passed by Congress in 1975 to conserve domestic energy supplies, specifically natural gas and crude oil, by prohibiting the export of both unless specifically covered by an allowable exemption. Although the Department of Commerce has instituted such a ban on crude oil, it has failed to address natural gas exports despite an exponential increase in such exports over the past decade. “The time is now to end the environmental and economic disaster of natural gas exports,” said Bill Snape, senior counsel at the Center for Biological Diversity and primary author of the petition.

Sen. Chuck Schumer: Wrong for Senate Democratic leadership

By CREDO Action - Starting a war with Iran is apparently the top legislative priority for the next leader of the Senate Democratic caucus. New York Senator Chuck Schumer just publicly declared that he will vote to kill the historic Iran nuclear peace deal and urge other Democrats in the Senate to do the same.1 There's no excuse for any Democrat to oppose the deal – least of all Senator Schumer, who is in line to take over leadership of the Senate Democrats once Senator Harry Reid retires. Chuck Schumer was wrong on Iraq when he voted for war and he is wrong on Iran. Schumer's decision to join Republicans in attempting to sabotage the Iran nuclear deal once again shows that he is unfit to lead Senate Democrats. Schumer is already facing a massive backlash for his dangerous attempt to take us to war with Iran. Even the White House is piling on, with Press Secretary Josh Earnest saying “I wouldn’t be surprised” if Senate Democrats consider Schumer’s decision in picking their next leader

Petition: Sandra Bland Deserves Justice

By Ultra Violet - Last Friday, 28 year-old Sandra Bland was driving to her new job in Waller County, TX when she was pulled over for switching lanes without a signal--a routine violation that usually ends with a ticket. But instead, officers slammed her head into the ground and arrested her. Three days later, she died in police custody. This is one of the most outrageous cases of police abuse we've seen yet. There is video showing the officer slamming Sandra to the ground as she pleads for them to stop. And the local sheriff, who claimed Sandra killed herself, was fired in a different city for multiple counts of racist and violent conduct. That's why we can't leave an investigation into Sandra's suspicious death in the hands of local officials.

Take Action: Congress Trying To Undo Net Neutrality

The Congress is trying to undo all of our work to ensure net neutrality. They are taking a back-door approach because several attempts at passing a law to undo an Internet where there is equal access for all with no discrimination based on wealth have failed. They are attaching a rider to an appropriations bill to defund net neutrality. We are joining with our ally, Free Press, to stop this sneak attack on net neutrality. Free Press writes: Tell Congress: Stop the Sneak Attack on Net NeutralityNet neutrality protester at Obama fundraiser 7-23-14 The appropriations bill moving through Congress would kill the FCC's Net Neutrality rules. And unlike other threats that have emerged in Congress, this is particularly troubling because it's hidden deep inside a big funding package that’s needed to keep the government operating.

Stop The DARK Act, Vote Next Week

By Pamm Larry of Label GMOs. “The Safe And Affordable Food Act” is also called the “Monsanto Protection Act of All Times” or the “Deny Americans The Right To Know” (DARK) Act. Whatever you want to call it, it’s moved out of the Ag House Committee and will be voted on next week on the House floor. We have to do our best to get as many NO votes as we can. What does DARK do? 1- Takes away States' right by pre-empting any state GMO labeling laws 2- Allows for GMOs to be labeled as natural 3- Basically prohibits the FDA from doing its testing and labeling job and puts in place a voluntary labeling scheme that folks will have to pay for. NonGMO Project would be outlawed in favor of this USDA program. Will they test?

Tell Congress To Support The Nuclear Deal With Iran

By Action Network - This is the final showdown to stop Congressional hawks from starting a war with Iran. The United States, Iran and five other world powers announced a historic deal to dramatically curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for easing international sanctions on Iran. Republican hawks are trying to sabotage the deal, put us back on the path to confrontation with Iran and start a war – but they can't do it unless Democrats help them. We need to build an impenetrable firewall in Congress to prevent Congressional hawks from passing any legislation to kill the deal and putting us back on the path to confrontation and war. Tell members of Congress to go on record in support of the deal.

We Want Our $25 Trillion Back! Audit & Recoup Extracted Wealth

By David DeGraw for ExitMedia. We demand a publicly transparent commission to audit and recoup wealth that has been extracted from the US economy through corrupt practices. Preliminary estimates lead us to believe that at least $25 trillion has been extracted. To give some context, $1 trillion is $1000 billion. With $25 trillion, we can dramatically rebuild and evolve society for the benefit of all. “Lawmakers” and "regulators" who have received any compensation from companies they regulated or wrote laws for, before or after holding government office, will be barred from further government activity and be fined in an amount at least equivalent to past compensation for such activities. All offshore wealth will be confiscated and individuals will be fined twice the amount they hid, and they will be prosecuted based on theft laws.

Reality Check: Is This Base Even Necessary?

By Shunji Taoka in Asahi Shimbun. Okinawa, Japan - Japan pays the U.S. some 600 billion yen (about six billion dollars) every year as part of its so-called "sympathy budget," covering base-related construction, services, maintenance, and local employees' compensation, as well as the rental on lands occupied by the U.S. bases. If, in fact, American forces are in Japan to prevent the country from becoming a major military power, this practice is tantamount to prisoners paying the salaries of their guards. Thus, the U.S. military's explanation for their presence in Japan does not go down well in the "host country." An April 1999 public opinion survey conducted jointly by polling organizations in both countries and published in the Asahi Shimbun, revealed that 49% of the Americans responding also said that the purpose of stationing U.S. forces in Japan was "to prevent it [Japan] from becoming a major military power."

Take Action Now: Demand Congress Release Trade Texts

By Staff at Popular Resistance, Popular Resistance has joined with a coalition of groups to demand that Congress use its power to publish the text of the Trans-Pacific Partrnership. This month is the key moment to stop Fast Track for the TPP and other rigged trade agreements. Secrecy is at the heart of the strategy to turn these abusive agreements into law. We can highlight this by demanding the text is made public. Please take action now: Sign the petition. Share this link and urge everyone you know to sign the petition. One of the most controversial aspects of the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement is that it’s secret from the public. If the proponents of the agreement have their way, the text will still be secret from the public when the House votes on Fast Track trade negotiating authority, essentially a vote to pre-approve the agreement.

Tell Baltimore To Stop The Water Shut Offs!

On April 1, Baltimore started turning off water to 150 households a day. The city plans to turn off 25,000 residences in total. There are commercial and public entities in Baltimore that owe $15 million, but they are not losing their access to water. Baltimore has a history of overcharging residents. This resulted in a $4.2 million refund to about 38,000 residents in 2012. Beginning in July 2013, Baltimore is raising water rates by 42% over a three year period. Advocates say that the city's programs to assist residents are burdensome and inadequate. There is a one time grant of about $160 available for those who qualify. Residents of Baltimore are concerned about the water shut offs for a number of reasons.

We All Need To Keep Our Eyes On Mumia

On Thursday Mumia's wife Wadiya Jamal visited him. She shared with us that his weakened state continues, and she is deeply concerned that he still has not had the appropriate care and diagnosis-- and in fact has been returned to the environment that allowed his chronic but treatable conditions to nearly kill him. We demand that: 1) Mumia’s chosen private physician has immediate regular phone access to Mumia in the infirmary. Phone access is limited in the infirmary, and Mumia and his physician need to be in conversation throughout each week. 2) His doctor be allowed to communicate freely and regularly with the prison infirmary physicians who are currently overseeing Mumia’s care. . .

USDA Approves ‘Untested, Inherently Risky’ GMO Apple

On Friday, February 13, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the first genetically engineered apple, despite hundreds of thousands of petitions asking the USDA to reject it. In April 2013, we interviewed scientists about the genetic engineering technology used to create the Arctic Apple, whose only claim to fame is that it doesn’t turn brown when sliced. The benefit to consumers? Being able to eat apples without having any sense of how old they are? Here’s what we learned about the technology, called RNA interference, or double strand RNA (dsRNA), from Professor Jack Heinemann (University of Canterbury, New Zealand), Sarah Agapito-Tenfen (from Santa Catarina University in Brazil) and Judy Carman (Flinders University in South Australia), all of whom said that dsRNA manipulation is untested, and therefore inherently risky. . .

Reject Unregulated Genetically Engineered Loblolly Pines!

In an unprecedented and alarming move, the US Department of Agriculture has given GE tree company ArborGen permission to pursue commercial production of a genetically engineered (GE) loblolly pine with no regulatory oversight or environmental risk assessment. This decision was withheld from the US public for almost five months. This is the first genetically engineered forest tree to be approved for commercial production anywhere in the world (outside of China). The potential impacts to the public or to the environment will not be evaluated, and overwhelming public opposition to GE trees is being completely ignored. This decision sets a terrible and unacceptable precedent. If unchallenged, it will allow other GE trees, with even more dangerous traits, to be developed without any federal or public review.

Walmart Stop Retaliating Rehire Ismael Nunez

On January 26th, I was terminated by Kelly Cooper, the manager for Walmart store #1772 in Klamath Falls, Oregon, in what I believe was retaliation for my efforts to speak out for a better workplace. I worked at Walmart for 11 years and didn’t have problems until I started getting involved along with other employees across the country in campaigns for better wages, better benefits and other improvements at Walmart. Since then, I have participated in some rallies and events and I joined a nationwide strike at the end of last year. The management at my store knew I’ve been a part of these efforts and have discouraged my coworkers from getting involved. Recently, things got worse. . .

Honest Media: Fire The Fox Producer

Fox affiliate caight faking a "kill a cop" protest chant should be fired! After the NYPD Police shooting, Baltimore Fox affiliate WBFF played a misleadingly edited clip from the recent National “Justice for All” March in Washington, D.C. to make it sound like protesters were calling on people to “kill a cop." We call on WBFF to fire the producer responsible for airing a deliberate attempt to fan the flames of violence. Why is this important? WBFF offered an apology, but the producer responsible for airing a deliberate attempt to fan the flames of violence should be fired! This was NOT a misquote. This was NOT a honest MISTAKE. It was a doctored propaganda campaign launched against peaceful demonstrators to support the irrational claims of NYPD Union President Patrick Lynch that blood is on the hands of those who dare to protest against police brutality and state sanctioned executions.
