Last Call: A Manifesto For Transformation

This is more than an economic and political crisis: it's a crisis of civilization. For the most part, European citizens believe the idea that consumer society can “progress” into the future (and that it should). Meanwhile, a good part of the inhabitants of the planet hope to achieve our level of material comfort. However, we have succeeded in achieving this level of production and consumption at the cost of exhausting natural resources and energy sources, and disrupting the equilibrium of Earth's ecosystems. None of this is new. The most lucid researchers and scientists have warned us since the 1970's: to continue with the current trends of growth (economic, demographic, in the use of resources, generation of pollutants and increase in inequality) the most probably result for the 21st century would be the collapse of civilization. Today the news has accumulated that indicates that the path of unrestricted growth is already a genocide in slow motion.

End Imprisonment For Conscientious Objection

After he turned 18 in November 2013, Arab Palestinian Druze musician Omar Sa’ad, who is an Israeli citizen, from Maghar in the Galilee, was called-up for conscription for 4 December 2013 - he declared publicly his “refus[al] to take an assault rifle and point it at another human being.” Omar Sa’ad, like a growing number of Druze Palestinian citizens of Israel, does not want to be a part of the Israeli army because – in his words - “the Israeli government is responsible for the occupation [of the Palestinian Territories]. As an Arab Druze I consider myself part of the Palestinian people - so how can I be part of the army that occupies my people? I won’t sell all my beliefs and my identity to anyone.” The right to reject military service on grounds of conscientious objection is protected under international human rights law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which Israel has ratified. Since December 2013, Omar Sa’ad has been in and out of prison, where he has spent 149 days, generally serving sentences of between 14 and 20 days at a time before being released and called up to serve the next day. Most recently, on April 13 he began, a seventh prison sentence of 40 days. At the beginning of May, he was denied medical attention by the military prison authorities for three days despite the seriousness of his condition, which apparently relates to a virus affecting his liver.

Tell Pandora To Stop Promoting Fracking

Pandora rocks. But what about the rocks in our own communities? I just heard Pandora pro-fracking advertisements played every hour. Pandora, through partnerships with Shell and American Petroleum Institute, has launched an aggressive and relentless advertising campaign in support of the highly controversial process of fracking. We are committed to protecting our communities. Four Colorado towns voted for bans or moratoria on hydraulic fracturing in November. Moreover, people are deeply affected by the floods that hit the state in September. Not only have the Colorado floods claimed lives and thousands of homes, they have also hit oil equipment sparking fears that fuel, heavy metals and hydraulic fracturing fluids, 41 of which are known to be extremely toxic, may be seeping into our local water supply.

Tell Obama – Stop State Kidnapping Of Lakota Children

South Dakota continues to violate the federal law by placing 90% of the 750 Lakota foster children it seizes each year into non-Native homes and facilities, instead of with relatives or tribal homes. Both federal law and the United Nations define this behavior as genocide. Only tribal programs are placing foster children with their relatives. Obama has the authority to order three federal agencies (the Department of the Interior, the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Human Services), to provide resources to train and develop tribal family service programs and foster care systems for the nine Lakota Sioux tribal Councils. Within a short time, the $60 million in federal funds that currently go to the State of South Dakota’s Department of Social Services to illegally remove Indian children and force them into foster care can instead be spent and managed by the tribes, as they work to keep children with relatives, while restoring tribal sovereignty.

Students Say, “Listen To Us, Don’t Criminalize Us.”

The Dignity in Schools Campaign-New York is a citywide coalition of youth, parents, educators and advocates fighting to end zero-tolerance discipline policies in New York City schools and to implement positive approaches like peer mediation and restorative practices. Nationwide, over 3 million students are suspended out of school each year. o In New York City in 2011-2012, there were over 69,000 suspensions in public schools. o Students with disabilities in NYC are four times more likely to be suspended than students without disabilities. o More than 38,000 Black students are suspended every year in NYC, and the majority are male.

Torture Whisleblower John Kiriakou Needs Your Help

John Kiriakou remains the only person from the Bush Administration era to have been incarcerated, or even tried, over issues related to torture. His crime? Blowing the whistle on it. In 2012 the Obama Administration brought charges against John because of his conversations with journalists about US torture and his supposed disclosure of an undercover agent. Since entering prison, John has released a series of letters detailing his conditions and thoughts. Now he needs your help! Nine months into his 30-month sentence, John is seeking to be granted at least nine months in a halfway house so that he may "resume productive contributions to society." He has put a call out to all supporters to help him push for a halfway house transfer by writting letters to the Bureau of Prisons residential reentry director, Erlinda Hernandez, and Federal Bureau of Prisons director Charles Samuels. Let's make sure he knows that the peace community supports him.

2 Million Voices Remember 2 Million Victims Of Afghan War

On the 16th of November, 2013, eight-year-old Hashim s/o Abdul Hamid and nine-year-old Zukoom s/o Abdul Majid were on the streets of Kabul polishing boots when a suicide bombing ( in opposition to the U.S./Afghanistan Bilateral Security Agreement ) killed them. Johnny Barber, a peace activist from New York, and Ronya, an independent, freelance journalist from Germany, accompanied the Afghan Peace Volunteers ( APVs ) to Hashim’s and Zukoom’s funeral in an Internally Displaced Persons ( IDP ) camp two days later. We had a conversation with Hashim and Zukoom’s classmates, Kahar and Naseem, which you can view at “At least 13 Afghan civilians killed, including Hashim & Zukoom”

Support the Beale Air Force Base Anti-Drone Protestors

In our peaceful efforts to make a difference, although most base personnel have been respectful of our vigil and occasional civil disobedience, we have come under assault by a few base personnel entering the base during rush hour on several occasions. Last spring one of our military veterans, representing Veterans for Peace, was run into by a car which drove through a blockade of protesters. He ended up being lifted onto the hood of a car, and was fortunate to receive only a minor injury to his elbow. That same day there were other close calls where a car zoomed close to someone on the shoulder of the road.

Take Action For International Assistance With The Crises At Fukushima

On November 7, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) started removing the spent fuel rods from the damaged Reactor 4 building. This task, which may take a year to complete, requires great care and precision. The rods are damaged and displaced. If a rod breaks, or rods get too close to each other or are exposed to air, a catastrophic reaction could begin and release massive quantities of radioactive material. Not only has TEPCO demonstrated that it is overwhelmed by the crises at Fukushima, but it has also not been forthcoming about the problems they face. Similarly the Japanese government has not been pro-active or forthcoming enough about this situation. The Abe Administration is pushing a state secrets act that would make the repercussions for blowing the whistle severe.

Obama Administration Approves Pro-Murder Border Patrol Policy

Southern New Mexico. Today’s decision of the Obama Administration to disregard and ignore the calls and recommendations to change Border Patrol’s protocols in the use of lethal force against unarmed immigrants and border residents is irresponsible and reprehensible. The announcement of the Border Patrol Chief Michael Fisher represents a major regression in the attempt to make border enforcement personnel accountable and opens the door for more incidents of institutional violence at the border and against immigrant families. The Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR) condemns this reckless decision of the Administration that fails to bring justice for those who have lost their lives due to wrongful shootings of Border Patrol agents.

President Obama, Pardon Bradley Manning

Join Amnesty International and the Bradley Manning Support Network insigning a petition to President Obama, then submit your photo with a personal message below. After a prosecution which starkly showcased US government officials' misplaced priorities when it comes to human rights, whistleblower and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Bradley Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison. The information that Bradley gave to the public exposed the unjust detainment of innocent people at Guantanamo Bay, shown us the true human cost of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and changed journalism forever. There is no evidence that anyone died as a result of the leaked information.

Tell Obama No to TPP Fast Track and Secrecy

To President Barack Obama: We call on you to create a more open process for negotiating and ratifying the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) - a trade agreement that would encourage the offshoring of jobs to sweatshops, compromise food safety, endanger the survival of family farms, prevent financial industry regulation, threaten internet freedom, and undermine US sovereignty by prohibiting local content, Buy American, and green procurement rules. This trade agreement will profoundly affect all of our lives. Thus, it's only fair that you allow civil society, the public, the media, and Congress to have a say by making all negotiating texts of TPP public and sending TPP to Congress under normal rules, rather than seeking Fast Track Authority.

Sign Up, Volunteer To Serve Part Of Manning’s Sentence

Join this campaign created by by Charlotte Scot to tell the Convening Authority in the prosecution of Bradley Manning, Major General Jeffrey S. Buchanan, that you will volunteer to serve part of Bradley Manning's sentence. Major General Buchanan has the power to reduce any sentence given to Manning. We will tell to Major General Buchanan how many have signed up to serve part of Manning's sentence so he knows that people feel strongly about the important role Manning has played for the people of the United States.

10 Facts About US Withdrawal from Afghanistan

In June 2011, President Obama announced his plan to begin the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. But the president did not say that all US troops would leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014. What he did say was 10,000 troops would be removed by the end of the summer 2011, with 23,000 additional troops leaving at the end of the summer of 2012. After that, according to the President: "our troops will continue coming home at a steady pace as Afghan security forces move into the lead. Our mission will change from combat to support. By 2014, this process of transition will be complete, and the Afghan people will be responsible for their own security." Notice that the President did not say that our mission in Afghanistan will end by 2014, only that it will cease to be a "combat" mission and become a "support" mission.
