Bolivian Social Movements Mobilize To Defend Vote Against Opposition Violence

On Tuesday morning, CONALCAM, a coalition of Indigenous groups and workers unions that are affiliated to Morales’ ‘Movement Towards Socialism’ held a press conference where they declared a state of emergency, calling for mobilizations in the streets to defend democracy. Right-wing protesters have launched numerous violent attacks across the country on Monday night as preliminary results indicated that leftist President Evo Morales is on course for a first round victory. Attacks included the burning down of vote counting centers and assaulting Indigenous supporters of Morales.

Bolivia Elections: ‘We’ll Launch a Coup If Evo Wins’

The U.S. embassy is always fighting the old race wars, but its ambitions are larger. Elections in Bolivia on October 20 are being watched closely by those who have followed the astounding successes of that majority Indigenous nation, now led by an Indigenous social movement and its mestizo allies called the Movement toward Socialism (MAS). MAS, which is both a gathering of labor and grassroots coalitions and a political instrument, has presided over one of the hemisphere’s most vibrant economies, especially if measured by human happiness.

Pink Tide Against US Domination Rising Again In Latin America

Once again, the left is rising in Latin America as people revolt against authoritarian regimes, many of whom were put in place by US-supported coups. These regimes have taken International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans and are under the thumb of international finance, which is against the interests of people. After the embattled President of Ecuador claimed that President Nicolas Maduro was the cause of the massive protests against him, Maduro made clear what was occurring in Latin America, saying: “We have two models: the IMF model which privatizes everything and takes away the people’s rights to health, education and work; and the humanist-progressive model which is emerging in Latin America and has the Bolivarian Revolution at the forefront.”

Venezuelan And Bolivian Heads Of State Address United Nations On Climate Crisis, Capitalism And Imperialism

In this house of the international community, common mechanisms of cooperation are also being stimulated in order to address the urgent need to preserve the environment, impacted by the devastating capitalist model. We express our solidarity with the brotherly Caribbean people of the Bahamas, a recent victim of the ravages of climate change. And as an Amazon country, we raise our voice to reject the barbaric commodification of our Amazon, led by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. He has used his extremist ideology to attack nature’s lungs. We proclaim the rights of nature as an everlasting banner of the peoples. We also came to this Organization to effectively address the urgent need to fight against poverty and inequality, where 26 people possess the same wealth as the 3.8 billion poorest people in the world.

“Color Revolution” Rehearsal In Bolivia Imitates Nicaragua’s Format

These were part of the statements given by the president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Evo Morales, after the violent events that took place last Thursday, September 12, in the department of Santa Cruz, when a political activity organized by militants of the Socialist Movement ( MAS) intersected with irregular groups identified with the 21F opposition platforms and the Cruceñista Youth Union. In the middle of the presidential electoral campaign and with the fires of La Chiquitania as a backdrop, the Bolivian president’s followers in Santa Cruz decided to organize the “blue afternoon” in several traffic circles of a sector called the Second Ring, with the aim of collecting resources and logistical support that would be sent to the front line in the burning locations, to collaborate with the firemen, police and volunteers in the recovery of the forest reserves.

Opposition Sets Democracy On Fire In Bolivia

The fragmented and heterogeneous right-wing opposition bloc in Bolivia has found in its increasingly sharp and violent attack on democracy and the institutions of the Plurinational State its point of convergence for its open opposition to the continuity of the Process of Change and President Evo Morales. Two major events, apparently disconnected, have confirmed the scope of its general strategy: first the fires affecting the Chiquitania dry forest and the other the physical violence unleashed by youth detachments, quasi-paramilitary, against MAS militants in the eastern city of Santa Cruz and the burning of an official campaign headquarters in the subtropical southern part of the Yungas of La Paz. The calls for the government to decree a national disaster based on the events of Chiquitanía and the call for an indefinite strike starting October 10 so that the members of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) resign are just the pretexts or apparent motives to set fire to Bolivian democracy.

Propaganda Blitz Against Bolivia’s Progressive Government

On 26 August, Novara Media’s website published a vicious and reactionary article titled ‘It’s Not Just Brazil’s Forests That Are Burning, Bolivia Is on Fire Too’ by prominent Extinction Rebellion speaker and activist Claire Wordley.  Novara and Wordley are recycling from the same imperialist playbook which has been drawn on in recent attacks against Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua – the so-called Troika of Tyranny. The gist of Wordley’s article is that Bolivian President Evo Morales is to blame for the fires raging in the Amazon rainforest...

The U.S. Footprint In Bolivia’s Incipient Colour Revolution

The burning of the forest immediately gave way to an aggressive campaign in social networks and media against President Evo Morales, attributing the fires to Decree 3973 and Law 741 that supposedly allow deforestation and controlled burning for activities oriented to agriculture and cattle ranching. “Las leyes de quema y desmonte” (The laws of burning and clearing) was the qualification that the opposition daily El Tiempo used for both legislations, omitting that one of them was approved by opponents and government officials in Congress, according to the president of the Senate, Adriana Salvatierra.

Western Regime-Change Operatives Launch Campaign To Blame Bolivia’s Evo Morales For Amazon Fires

With fires set by landowners raging throughout the Amazon for nearly a month, a group of Western-backed information warriors has begun working to redirect outrage from the far-right Brazilian government toward a more convenient target.  After a flurry of media pinned the blame on everyone from poor people eating meat to China, a new target has come into focus: the leftist Bolivian government of President Evo Morales. Originally content to merely accuse Bolivians of not responding fast enough...

Bolivia Orders World’s Largest Air Tanker To Combat Amazon Fires

Bolivia’s President Evo Morales announced on Wednesday that Bolivia had contracted a Boeing 747 ‘Supertanker’ to help extinguish huge forest fires in the Amazon have that spilled over from Brazil. By Wednesday evening, the government confirmed that the tanker is arriving in the country and will be operational on Friday. The ‘Supertanker’ can carry more water than any other aircraft in the world, capable of flying with 115, 000 liters, equivalent to a 100 regular air tankers. Prior to the tanker's arrival, the military will fly planes over the region to assess where exactly the tanker should focus.

Evo Morales And An Independent, Sovereign Bolivia

After 194 years since its foundation, Bolivia is now highlighted as a sovereign and independent country, with significant economic, political and social advances, as well as international recognition, under the administration of President Evo Morales. Throughout the whole month, the population is commemorating August 6, 1825, the day the country’s autonomy was declared from the Spanish control and the Republic of Bolivia was created. “Long Live a Free, Decent, and Sovereign Bolivia!” stressed President Evo Morales on the occasion in his Twitter profile.

Decolonization Displaces Neoliberalism In Bolivia

In the central interior of the Canadian province of British Columbia is the unceded territory of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. A corporate entity, Coastal GasLink (CGL), abetted by colonial-government structures, is preparing to lay a pipeline in this territory. The Dinï ze’ and Ts’akë ze’ (hereditary chiefs) did not grant consent for this; in fact, the proposal from CGL was unanimously rejected. On 22 July, the Gidimt’en (Wolf and Bear) Clan of the Wet’suwet’en filed a lawsuit against CGL in the BC Supreme Court connected to the enforcement on 7 January...

Bolivia’s Universal Healthcare Is Model For The World, Says UN

The U.N.’s World Health Organization praised Bolivia’s newly implemented universal health care system, known in the country as the Single Health System (SUS). The WHO pointed out that Bolivia’s leftist government has given generous funding and resources to health, ensuring free treatment for all. Alfonso Tenorio, a representative of the WHO and the Pan American Health Organization, spoke Wednesday in Geneva, in praise of Bolivia’s health system. Tenorio spoke afterwards with state radio company Red Patria Nueva, saying, “Bolivia has become an important model for the world.

Six Achievements Of The Communes That We Must Defend And Develop

After the May 20 elections, the Bolivarian Revolution is entering a new stage. Plenty of analysis has been written about the elections, and there are many demands that are waiting to be fulfilled in the context of Nicolás Maduro’s reelection. The dangers are evident: our enemies are advancing with a plan that is clear to everyone. However, the question remains: how is the government going to drive forward the strategic project of constructing socialism? For many, the road ahead means following Chávez’s path: commune or nothing. More than a slogan, this phrase captures the long road of 20 years of revolutionary experience, of achievements that are now threatened. As such, this phrase demands not only the political reorientation of the Revolution but also its advancement.

Evo Morales: ‘US Is Greatest Threat To Freedom, Democracy’

"The biggest threat against freedom, against democracy, against Mother Earth and against multilateralism is the United States," Bolivian President Evo Morales said. Bolivia's President Evo Morales has warned that the United States is the greatest threat to democracy, and that Latin America mustn't serve its agenda, following the attacks waged by the United States, France and the United Kingdom against Syria. "The biggest threat against freedom, against democracy, against Mother Earth and against multilateralism is the United States. I am not afraid to say this openly," Morales said at the Summit of the Americas. "Washington spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on weapons of mass destruction." The president pointed out that Bolivia has shaken itself free of the influence of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
