Chile’s Struggle To Democratize The State

The social uprising in Chile has now reached its fourth month. Masses of people continue to protest and demand structural change despite ferocious repression—mainly at the hands of the militarized Carabineros police force—which has revived traumatic memories. Now, Chileans are looking ahead to a plebiscite that may open the way to a new Constitution.

Chile’s Piñera And His Repressive Laws Versus The Subversion Of A People

The months of rebellion that the people of Chile are experiencing have caused them to ask themselves questions, which require quick answers because if they are not answered as soon as possible they open up the possibility of a scenario that the ruling class in power does not like and will make every effort to undermine. The thoughts, purposes, beliefs and reflections left to us last October 18 show us how the subversion of one of the most suffering peoples of Latin America...

Four Months After The Revolt In Chile: Repression, Resistance And Struggle Continues

They have not been able to cope with this stubborn and brave people who for four months have not only gone out into the squares by the thousands but have also changed their names to beautiful words like “Dignity” and “Revolution”. It has torn down monuments of conquerors and traitors who were their disciples, it has suffered wounds in the eyes of many young people who had opened them up to look at their enemies...

Chile Where The Real Violence Is Coming From

Since the people’s rebellion began against the Sebastian Piñera Administration and neoliberalism in Chile, he and the pro-Pinochet right-wing have gathered under Chile Vamos, in collaboration with the institutional press, to stigmatize those in active opposition as rebels and subversive. As the saying goes, “the thief behind the judge.” The violence generated in Chile since October 18, 2019...

Citizen Assemblies Are Challenging The Neo Liberal Model In Chile

If a Chilean was told a year ago that in a few months he would find popular assemblies in his neighborhood to give his opinion and decide on the future of his country, he surely would not have believed it. But it’s happening. October 18, 2019, marked a before and after in Chile. The social uprising that began with high school students jumping the turnstiles of the subway is now requiring new forms of organization.

Chile: 5 Dead In A Week As Violent Repression Continues

Chile has faced one of its most violent weeks after five people have died due to the increase of violence and repression in the hands of the militarized police (Carabineros). The deaths took place in different locations of Santiago. So far, 31 deaths have been registered since  Oct. 18 when demonstrations began against the measures promoted by the current neoliberal government.

The Privatization Of Rivers In Chile

The Chilean government has continued with the mercantile treatment of common goods, putting several rivers in the Bio Bio Region up for auction, despite ongoing social unrest. The practice of auctioning off rivers is legally supported by the 1981 water code. By conceiving of water as an economic asset, this code has made rivers mere objects for energy exploitation; the state hands over access through a resolution that enables private parties to harness rivers for commercial hydropower.

How New Creative Actions Are Fueling Chile’s Uprising

In response to repression by Chilean police, decentralized performances — sparked by small artist collectives — are replacing traditional barricades. On the surface, things have calmed down in Chile, after the initial weeks of massive demonstrations that began on Oct. 18, and brought the military back into the streets almost three decades after the fall of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. But the country is far from calm. While new repressive tactics are being used to keep stubborn protesters away from the now legendary Dignity Square, the Chilean people.

Chile: Three Months After The Anti-neoliberal Rebellion

From there on began the collapse of the myth of the successful Chilean model. The oasis was just a mirage. The main window of neoliberalism was broken and surrounded by barricades, erected by high school students and an entire people who had been in debt and humiliated for decades.Yesterday marked three months since the social outburst of October 18. That day a Chile woke up from an overdose of sedatives and painkillers. It woke up and started to meet again.

Thousands Of Chileans Receive The New Year With Protests

On the day, protesters made an altar to honor Mauricio Fredes, who died Friday after falling into a water pit when he escaped the repression unleashed by police. Thousands of Chileans returned to fill Plaza Dignidad, in Santiago, Chile, to receive the New Year with a massive dinner and facing the repression of the militarized police of Carabineros, in the framework of the anti- government protests that last for more than two months.

Piñera Signs Decree Calling Constitutional Referendum

Chile's President Sebastian Piñera Friday signed the decree that summons the constitutional plebiscite on April 26, 2020, which will allow Chileans to decide whether or not they want a new constitution. "We are going to live a transcendent period in these 121 days that we have until the plebiscite," Piñera said at an event carried out at the Palace of La Moneda in Santiago. This process seeks to change the constitution generated under the tutelage of the dictator Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), which is one of the main demands that citizens have raised in the protests that have developed continuously since October. On April 26, 2020, besides deciding whether or not to support a constitutional change, Chileans will choose between two mechanisms for drafting the new constitution.

Chile: TV Broadcast Live When Two Armored Cars Crushed Citizen

During the protests that took place at Dignity Square on Friday, Chile’s Military Police deliberately ran over Oscar Perez, a young citizen who was crushed between two armored vehicles. The scenes of the police attack were broadcast live on local television. In the video, it can be seen that while an armored car closes Oscar's way, the other armored car takes a turn, accelerates towards the citizen, attacks him, and runs him over his back. Stated differently, the police used two armored cars to run a "hammer-and-anvil" move against an unarmed civilian.

Report On The United Nations Climate Meeting: Capitalism Can’t Solve The Climate Crisis

The United Nations Conference of Parties, COP25, climate meetings to continue working on the Paris Climate Agreement ended recently. They took place in Madrid Spain rather than Chile because of popular uprisings against neoliberalism in Chile. We speak with Anne Petermann of the Global Justice Ecology Project. Petermann has been attending the COP meetings since the early 2000's. Her organization chose to stay in Chile. We speak with her about what is going on there and about the COP meetings - whether they are effective or not - and what people need to be doing to deal with the climate crisis effectively. Petermann explains why many of the 'solutions' being put forward are false and harmful paths. We also provide current news and analysis.

Chile: Democracy And Dictatorship Face Off

In Chile there is a clash between democracy, on the one hand, represented by the mobilization of millions for their demands, for their rights, and who are the true people of Chile … and the dictatorship, on the other hand. This is a dictatorship that represents the 140 large families that rule the country and concentrate 30% of GDP in their hands, backed by mercenaries who are ready to do anything to keep Piñera in power, despite the fact that he is credited with a mere 4% support in the polls.
