Sunrise Movement Disrupts Senate To Stop Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

Through a mass mobilization effort by the Sunrise Movement, activists gathered in the U.S. Capitol on June 3, 2025, to execute a series of Senate disruptions. Multiple groups stormed the halls of the Philip A. Hart Senate Office Building, with actions focusing on senators who support President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” including Senator Thom Tillis. Multiple arrests were made. The day started with several speakers who came from as far away as Alaska, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. Speakers opposed the bill due to several controversial changes. The general premise many voiced was that millions of people would be unable to afford basic meals if food assistance programs were cut. Some also spoke of the potential harms to the environment.

The multifaith, multiracial, queer and trans-affirming coalition joined in prayer for an end to the genocide in Gaza and demanded that Congress send “Food, Not Bombs.”

Senate Advances Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, Includes $150 Billion For Military

The Senate on Tuesday advanced a massive spending package, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill” by President Trump, that includes $150 billion in extra military spending. The bill passed in a vote of 51-50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote, as three Republicans — Senators Rand Paul (KY), Susan Collins (ME), and Thom Tillis (NC) — joined Democrats in voting against the sprawling piece of legislation. House GOP leaders have scheduled a vote for the bill on Wednesday and are hoping to get it to President Trump’s desk by this Friday, though uncertainty remains about how fast it will get through the chamber.

America For Sale! Everything Must Go!

The U.S. government has fallen into the hands of people who lack proper metaphors; all they know is business. The nation should be “run like a business” according to these unimaginative suits among the GOP, who haven’t read or studied enough to consider how the government might be run like anything else. The problem with this thinking is it will, by inevitably following the profit motive, lead to a terminal phase. With the House passage of President Donald Trump’s budget legislation “One Big Beautiful Bill,” the United States has reached the private equity looting stage of the metaphor. The logic of this scheme will collapse, but it might bring us all down with it.

Health-Care Workers Mobilize Against Massive Medicaid Cuts

“Medicaid! “Saves Lives!” health-care workers chanted in call-and- response outside New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Washington Heights June 23. The overhead passageway between two buildings provided a bit of shade but no protection from the 93-degree heat. “Keep the hospitals open,” called out a woman with “Healthcare Hero” on the back of her shirt, despite the oppressive temps. The rally, a rotating cast of dozens of people in purple 1199SEIU T-shirts, maroon scrubs, and navy-blue mechanics’ gear, and environmental-services workers in sky-blue hair coverings, was one of 11 street actions the union organized in New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley to protest congressional plans to cut close to $1 trillion from Medicaid in next year’s federal budget.

Congress Is Pushing For A Medicaid Work Requirement

Congressional Republicans, looking for ways to offset their proposed tax cuts, are seeking to mandate that millions of Americans work in order to receive federally subsidized health insurance. The GOP tax and budget bill passed the House in May, and Senate Republicans are working feverishly to advance their draft of federal spending cuts in the coming days. Georgia, the only state with a Medicaid work mandate, started experimenting with the requirement on July 1, 2023. As the Medicaid program’s two-year anniversary approaches, Georgia has enrolled just a fraction of those eligible, a result health policy researchers largely attribute to bureaucratic hurdles in the state’s work verification system. As of May 2025, approximately 7,500 of the nearly 250,000 eligible Georgians were enrolled, even though state statistics show 64% of that group is working.

Tell Congress, No War On Iran!

Is there a member of the United States congress who is unequivocally opposed to a military attack on Iran? Since Israel began its missile attack on June 13, 2025, most of the public comments from members of the House and the Senate have been decidedly pro-Israel. “Let Israel finish the job,” and even “Pray for Israel ,” have been typical statements from the officials who are charged with representing the people of their country, most of whom oppose a U.S. war in that region. In typical fashion, the Donald Trump administration first claimed that Israel’s attack was “unilateral ” and that the U.S. had no involvement. The lie was so obvious as to be amusing, but Trump, in typical fashion, later said , “I always knew the date.

Bipartisan Lawmakers Push To Limit Trump’s War Powers On Iran

In response to Donald Trump’s recent declaration that the U.S. could become involved in Israel’s attacks on Iran, U.S. lawmakers are pushing efforts to curb the President’s war powers. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY.) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) are introducing a bipartisan bill that would force Trump to obtain congressional approval to enter the war. “This is not our war,” tweeted Massie. “But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution. I’m introducing a bipartisan War Powers Resolution tomorrow to prohibit our involvement. I invite all members of Congress to cosponsor this resolution.”

Public Transit Is In Crisis; Congress Can Fix It

Transit is essential. It’s how we get to health care appointments, parks, school, and work. Essential workers, small businesses, and under-served communities throughout the country depend on transit. Transit is a key component of economic opportunity, jobs, and a more environmentally sustainable society — and it’s a road to equity for disconnected communities. But from coast to coast — in big cities and in rural areas, in red and blue states — transit agencies are facing massive budget shortfalls and reducing service. And recent actions by the Trump administration — from Elon Musk taking a chainsaw to the federal government to Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy threatening to withhold key federal funding — will worsen a bad situation.

Charles Rangel And The End Of Black Politics

“We are also supposed to be very excited about the prospect of Charlie Rangel, of Harlem, becoming head of the House Ways and Means Committee. Why? Rangel has been a front for the Clinton duo --- Hillary and Bill --- for many years. He carried their water in the NAFTA-for-Africa bill, which expanded U.S. corporate penetration of the continent exponentially.” - Glen Ford, Black Agenda Report, November 1, 2006 The recent passing of former Congressman Charles B. Rangel at the age of 94 does not mark the end of a political era. The era which defined Black politics – that is to say, a politics which consciously and purposefully made demands on behalf of Black people – ended long ago.

Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful’ Cuts To Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid And More

The MAGA movement claims to support health care for vulnerable Americans, but their budget tells a different story. 13.7 million people will lose Medicaid — nearly 1 in 5 current enrollees. Nationally, 72 million rely on Medicaid, including 1.6 million in Louisiana and 180,000 in New Orleans. Another 500,000 low-income Louisianans get subsidized ACA coverage. Everyone on Medicaid or ACA plans will suffer from these cuts. This isn’t “saving money” — it’s a war on the poor, sick, and vulnerable. Millions will suffer, hospitals will close, and families will be bankrupted — all to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. These cuts are cruelty by design.

Committee Passes Charity Killer Provision In Tax Bill

This morning, the House Ways and Means Committee passed their tax bill granting the Secretary of Treasury the ability to accuse any nonprofit of being a “terrorist supporting organization” without basic due process. Defending Rights & Dissent joined over 200 organizations on the following statement condemning the provision: “Charities that feed the hungry, churches and faith communities that comfort the grieving, veterans’ groups that care for our heroes, and countless other service providing organizations are at risk today because of this legislation. “Nonprofits are on the front lines of meeting every community need. Instead of supporting those who serve our neighbors, this bill would hand any president’s administration the power to cast them as potential enemies of the state if they happen to disagree with their political agenda.

Trump DOJ Adopts Policy Permitting Journalist Arrests

United States Attorney General Pam Bondi ended a Justice Department (DOJ) policy that explicitly discouraged federal prosecutors from forcing journalists to reveal their sources and other sensitive information, including information obtained from potential leaks. With new guidelines, members of the news media who refuse to cooperate with prosecutors could be arrested for contempt. If accused of contempt, they could be fined or jailed. The move by Bondi comes as Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has “referred” three alleged “intelligence leakers” to the DOJ for criminal prosecution.

US War Chief Faces Calls To Resign Over New ‘Signalgate’ Scandal

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing criticism and calls for his firing after it was reported by the New York Times (NYT) that he shared sensitive military plans of a March attack on Yemen in a Signal chat group that included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer.  According to a source familiar with the matter, speaking with Reuters, the chat included about a dozen people and contained details of the airstrikes' schedule.   “The revelations of a second Signal chat raise more questions about Hegseth's use of an unclassified messaging system to share highly sensitive security details,” Reuters wrote.

We’re About To Find Out What Mass Deportation Really Looks Like

The Trump administration is working hard to convince the public that its mass-deportation campaign is fully under way. Over the past several weeks, federal agents have seized foreign students off the streets, raided worksites, and shipped detainees to a supermax prison in El Salvador using wartime powers adopted under the John Adams administration. The tactics have spread fear and created a showreel of social-media-ready highlights for the White House. But they have not brought U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement much closer to delivering the “millions” of deportations President Donald Trump has set as a goal.
