Standoff Between Trump And Green Groups Just Boiled Into War

By Darryl Fears and Juliet Eilperin for The Washington Post - The first shots have been fired in what’s likely to be a long, bitter war over the environment between conservationists and President Trump. It started Wednesday when a broad coalition of groups sued the Trump administration in federal court, barely 24 hours after the president signed an executive order that lifted a moratorium on new coal leases on federal land. Earthjustice, the Sierra Club, WildEarth Guardians, Defenders of Wildlife, the Center for Biological Diversity and others call the directive illegal because it allows a massive area of land to be disrupted without any federally required study of the potential environmental impact.

Nearly 400 ‘March For Science’ Protests Against Trump’s Climate Policies

By Staff of Tele Sur - Nearly 400 marches in 37 countries will protest U.S. President Donald Trump’s environmental policies on April 22, Earth Day. On April 22, nearly 400 marches in 37 countries will protest U.S. President Donald Trump’s environmental policies, which deny the existence of climate change. Organizers of the global march, who include scientists and environmental activists from around the world, plan to hold the largest action in Washington, D.C. The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, is slated to be a major target. Bill Nye “The Science Guy” and notable environmental experts Mona Hanna-Attisha and Lydia Villa-Komaroff will headline the march.

Trump Drives US Deeper Into Middle East War Quagmire

By Medea Benjamin for the Guardian. Donald Trump loudly criticized President Obama’s air campaign against Islamic State as “too gentle” and called for a reassessment of battlefield rules designed to protect civilians. The US military insists that the rules of engagement have not changed, but Iraqi officers have been quoted in the New York Times as saying that there has been a noticeable relaxing of the coalition’s rules of engagement since President Trump took office. President Trump has also escalated US intervention in Syria. In March, he authorized the deployment of 400 more troops to fight the Islamic State in Syria, and has upped the number of US airstrikes there. According to the UK-based organization Airwars, for the first time since Russia intervened in Syria’s civil war in 2015, US strikes in Syria are now responsible for more civilian casualties than Russian strikes. Among the most devastating incidents was a strike on a school sheltering displaced people outside Raqqa that killed at least 30 people, and an attack on a mosque in western Aleppo that killed dozens of civilians while they were attending prayers.

Farmworkers, Supporters Take Trump Resistance To Trump Country

By Staff of United Farm Workers - Tens of thousands of farm workers will lead the resistance to Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant policies by staging marches and events organized by the United Farm Workers and other farm worker organizations around Cesar Chavez’s March 31 birthday in 11 mostly rural communities—most of which backed Trump—across California, Texas, Washington state and Oregon. Most take place on Sunday, April 2, when farm workers have the day off. Rural and agricultural counties voted heavily for Trump during last year’s presidential election.

Trump Succumbs To Bush/Obama Perpetual War

By Ann Wright for Consurtium News - In my letter of resignation, I wrote of my deep concerns about Bush’s decision to attack Iraq and the predictable large number of civilian casualties from that military attack. But I also detailed my concerns on other issues: the lack of U.S. effort on resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict, the U.S. failure to engage North Korea to curb nuclear and missile development, and the curtailment of civil liberties in the United States through the Patriot Act. Now, three Presidents into the Iraq War and other unsettled conflicts, the problems that I was concerned about in 2003 are even more dangerous a decade and a half later.

Is Trump Waging A Stealth War Of Retaliation Against Sanctuary Cities?

By Sarah Lazare for AlterNet - General Jeff Sessions doubles down on President Donald Trump’s threats to crack down on sanctuary cities, evidence is mounting that the administration has already made them the target of retaliatory immigration raids as part of a backdoor effort to force compliance. The term “sanctuary city” refers to the hundreds of jurisdictions across the United States that, to one degree or another, limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. CNN reported on March 25 that an unnamed “senior U.S. immigration official with direct knowledge of ongoing ICE actions” testified that federal authorities have descended upon sanctuary cities to pressure them to cooperate.

Heavily Armed Left-Wing Group Shows Up At Pro-Trump Rally

By Jacob Steinblatt for Vocativ - A heavily armed left-wing group, the John Brown Gun Club, made a surprise appearance over the weekend at a pro-Trump rally being held in Phoenix, Arizona with a conciliatory message for supporters of the president. About two dozen men and women armed with a variety of rifles stood beside the march in downtown Phoenix, in order to both show their opposition to the Trump administration and its policies, and to appeal to supporters of President Trump as fellow members of the working class. The group describes itself as largely white and working class, with the ultimate goal of “total liberation of all working people, regardless of skin color, religious background, sexual orientation, gender identity, [or] nationality.”

Trump Renegotiation Of NAFTA Betrays People & Planet

By Audrey Fox for Friends of the Earth - WASHINGTON, D.C. – A draft of Donald Trump’s notice to Congress of his intent to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement has leaked. Friends of the Earth president Erich Pica issued the following statement in light of the leaked document: Despite his campaign rhetoric, Donald Trump’s leaked draft plan for NAFTA renegotiation betrays workers and the planet. Trump deceived voters who supported him based on his promise to fix NAFTA or to withdraw from the agreement altogether in order to bring industrial jobs back to the United States. Trump’s draft notice appears to be modeled on the failed Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, which he excoriated on the campaign trail.

Twitter Erupts With Trump Erasure Of LGBTQ People From Census

By Graham Gremore for Queerty - The Trump Administration’s attempt to completely erase the LGBTQ community rages on. First, the White House deleted the LGBT rights page from its official website. Then it axed the White House Office of AIDS Policy. Then it announced massive cuts to the HIV/AIDS research budget. Now, it wants to eliminate LGBTQ citizens from the 2020 census. Every 10 years, the federal government conducts the U.S. Census to determine the number of people living in the country. They also record things like race and gender, employment and marital status, household income and education levels, and other information to help paint as accurate a picture as possible to then determine what resources it needs to spend where.

Federal Judge In Hawaii Extends Court Order Blocking Trump Travel Ban

By Staff of Reuters - “The Court will not crawl into a corner, pull the shutters closed, and pretend it has not seen what it has.” "Where the 'historical context and "the specific sequence of events leading up to"' the adoption of the challenged Executive Order are as full of religious animus, invective, and obvious pretext as is the record here, it is no wonder that the Government urges the Court to altogether ignore that history and context. The Court, however, declines to do so. ... The Court will not crawl into a corner, pull the shutters closed, and pretend it has not seen what it has." "The Court recognizes that it is not the case that the Administration’s past conduct must forever taint any effort by it to address the security concerns of the nation.

Lawsuit Filed Against Trump’s Anti-Climate Executive Order

By Staff of Earth Justice - ON MARCH 28, PRESIDENT TRUMP ISSUED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER directing the Department of Interior to resume giving away tens of thousands of acres of public lands to the coal industry, overturning a coal-leasing moratorium put in place by the Obama administration. A day later, that’s exactly what the Department of Interior did. The pause in leasing was ordered last year by former Interior Secretary Sally Jewell to allow time to review and reform the federal program to ensure protection of the climate. The coal leasing program determines how 570 million publicly-owned acres are leased to coal companies for exploration and mining. It has not been significantly updated since 1979.

Trump Repeals Regulation Protecting Workers From Wage Theft

By Dave Jamieson for The Huffington Post - WASHINGTON ― Companies that commit wage theft and put their workers in harm’s way just received a favor from the Trump administration. President Donald Trump signed a bill Monday repealing a regulation that had encouraged federal contractors to follow labor laws. Under the Obama-era rule, companies with an egregious record of violating wage and safety laws would lose their government contracts if they didn’t come into compliance. The idea behind the rule was to make sure unscrupulous employers didn’t receive taxpayer dollars. But Republicans in Congress thought the rule was too punitive and unfair to businesses...

Global Anger And Dismay After Trump Slams Brakes On U.S. Climate Action

By Nika Knight for Common Dreams - "If 'America First' means you want to lead, then you can't turn the clock back and rely on a century-old technology. You're missing the train," Thomas Stocker, a climate scientist at the University of Bern, Switzerland, told the New York Times about Trump's push to reinvigorate the coal industry. "Whoever tries to change into reverse gear is only going to harm themselves when it comes to international competitiveness," German environment minister Barbara Hendricks told the Times. "No matter how other countries' policies on climate change change, as a responsible large developing country, China's resolve, aims and policy moves in dealing with climate change will not change,"...

Public Opposes Spending More On MIlitary, Wants Cuts

By Peter Cary for Center for Public Integrity - Altogether, the survey looked at the 10 top areas of spending in Trump’s “Budget Blueprint” and found a gap of $139.6 billion between what the majority of the public would spend and what Trump has proposed. Steven Kull, PPC’s director, said he was surprised both by the extent of the gap and the fact that Trump’s proposals were at odds with the preferences of both Republicans and Democrats. In general, those who identified themselves as Republicans were more likely to favor cutting some of the spending that Trump has proposed to cut, but on a raft of areas where Trump proposed large reductions, members of his party preferred to cut less.

Trump Sides With Coal And Other Carbon Polluters

By Alex Guillen for Politico - President Donald Trump ordered his administration to begin dismantling his predecessor’s climate change policies on Tuesday with a sweeping directive to end what he called a "crushing attack" on the U.S. economy — by halting efforts to reduce the carbon pollution of electric utilities, oil and gas drillers and coal miners. The executive order Trump signed represents his biggest blow yet to former President Barack Obama’s climate legacy. But it does not go as far as some conservatives would like to dismantle the EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases, nor will it begin to separate the U.S. from a landmark international climate accord — two areas of intense disagreement within the administration.
