Although it seems like years, it has been only five months since President Donald Trump took office in the White House for the second time. His goal—effectively condensed in the slogan MAGA (Make America Great Again)—is to do whatever needs to be done to regain the lost primacy. It contemplates an unconventional socio-economic-political revolution whose scope involves us. For many reasons, Argentina and, above all, our South, are in the Trumpist “restoration” plan. He said it clearly on January 20, 2025, when he took office in the White House: “An exciting new era of national success is beginning… From this moment on, the decline of the US is over”.

Initial US Intelligence Assessment: US Didn’t Destroy Iran’s Nuclear Sites

CNN reported on Tuesday that an initial US intelligence assessment has found that the US bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites didn’t destroy the core components of the sites and likely set back the nuclear program by only a few months. The assessment was prepared by the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and was based on a battle damage assessment from US Central Command, and it could change as the US gathers more intelligence. “So the (DIA) assessment is that the US set them back maybe a few months, tops,” a source told CNN. The report also said that the US strikes didn’t destroy Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, and the centrifuges were largely “intact.”

Opponents of the war with Iran say that the war is not in American interests, seeing that Iran does not pose any visible threat to the United States. This appeal to reason misses the neoconservative logic that has guided U.S. foreign policy for more than a half century, and which is now threatening to engulf the Middle East in the most violent war since Korea. That logic is so aggressive, so repugnant to most people, so much in violation of the basic principles of international law, the United Nations, and the U.S. Constitution, that there is an understandable shyness in the authors of this strategy to spell out what is at stake.

As of this writing, the Trump White House has launched an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran – a country that already is the victim of an unprovoked aggression by Israel. B-52 bombers have hit three major nuclear facilities; batteries of Tomahawk missiles also have been fired. The potential consequences are catastrophic. This action is in violation of the explicit Constitutional provision that Congress alone has the power to declare war. That fundamental fact gets barely mentioned in whatever public discourse has taken place. The termination point of this reckless path to war will find us despised in the world – whatever the immediate military outcome.

We’ve seen that federal overreach in Los Angeles precipitated massive collective action, but equally important is how Mayor Bass and municipal governments across the country absorb this energy to build more democratically resilient cities. At home and abroad we’ve seen this before — when protests are framed as security threats, when military force is used to override local authority, and when federal funding is used to intimidate. And, we have also seen a wellspring of tools to help cities win against contemporary authoritarian tactics. During my time as a democracy expert overseas, I saw a range of strategies used by civil society and governments to resist authoritarian backsliding. From them, we should take inspiration.

“I don’t care what she said.” That’s what U.S. President Donald Trump said when a reporter confronted him with the one point that every reporter should be bringing up to him: “Tulsi Gabbard testified in March that the Intelligence Community said that Iran wasn’t building a nuclear weapon.” The President of the United States, with no evidence, stated that he simply believes a very key, yet false, point to be true despite his own intelligence services telling him that it isn’t. And on that basis, he may bring the United States into yet another doomed war in the Middle East.

As the Trump administration continues to ramp up its regime of mass deportations, grassroots organizers are growing the immigrant rights movement in opposition. Last week, Trump promised to pause some ICE raids at workplaces over concerns from employers in the farming and hospitality industries. However, this week, Trump’s border czar Tom Homan confirmed that the raids will in fact continue. “We’re going to continue to do worksite enforcement operations, even on farms and hotels, but based on a prioritized basis. Criminals come first,” Homan told reporters on June 19.

The assessments of our intelligence agencies and international bodies are, as they were during the calls to invade Iraq, airily dismissed for hallucinations. Is there a member of the United States congress who is unequivocally opposed to a military attack on Iran? Since Israel began its missile attack on June 13, 2025, most of the public comments from members of the House and the Senate have been decidedly pro-Israel. “Let Israel finish the job,” and even “Pray for Israel ,” have been typical statements from the officials who are charged with representing the people of their country, most of whom oppose a U.S. war in that region. In typical fashion, the Donald Trump administration first claimed that Israel’s attack was “unilateral ” and that the U.S. had no involvement. The lie was so obvious as to be amusing, but Trump, in typical fashion, later said , “I always knew the date.

The war on Iran aims to “weaken China” and ensure “US global dominance”, said Donald Trump’s former national security advisor, Michael Flynn. He admitted that the United States is giving Israel substantial intelligence, weapons, and training, helping it to wage this war. Flynn, a retired US general, emphasized that the goal of this joint US-Israeli war is regime change: to overthrow Iran’s government. “A positive US relationship with a [new] Iranian regime, so whatever the regime is that rises up out of the ashes, if we have a positive relationship with that regime, that really benefits the United States of America, particularly against China, and it weakens China”, he argued.

US Relocates Forces From Gulf Bases Ahead Of Possible Iran Strike

On 18 June, the US began relocating aircraft and naval assets from key military sites in West Asia over concerns of potential Iranian retaliation, two US officials told reporters on condition of anonymity. The repositioning effort includes aircraft not housed in hardened shelters at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and naval vessels previously stationed at the port of Bahrain, home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet. One official said the moves fall under standard force protection procedures. “It is not an uncommon practice,” the official said. “Force protection is the priority.”
