Bannering Against War in Baltimore

At 4:30 PM, when the bosses left work early to beat the rush to the northwest Baltimore suburbs, there were few waves and honks at our banner “Israel Stop Killing Protesters.” Neither were there digits of disapproval. But by 5:30 when the workforce passed under our bridge over the Jones Falls Expressway, the waves and honks were noticeably more frequent. Sympathy for our protest more than doubled as traffic slowed in the 5 o’clock rush. The fingers of foes also increased, but were still only one out of 20 waves, thumbs up and honks of support. At first, the silence was deafening, compared with last week’s banner du jour “No War on Iran!” when support was twice as evident. Our count of 130 cars per minute during rush hour totals to 7,800 vehicles per hour of visibility. We could not ask for a better captive audience.

High Alert For Palestinian Slaughter & Conflict With Iran

There will be a confluence of trigger events this week that could lead to an escalation of conflict. At the same time that the US has reneged on the nuclear agreement and Israeli missiles are attacking Iranians in Syria, the US embassy will be moved to Jerusalem and Palestinians will protest the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, capping six weeks of actions.

Legalizing The Nakba: Israeli Land And Planning Law Regime

The origins of the modern Israeli land and planning law regimes can be traced back to 1901, the year in which the Jewish National Fund (JNF) was established. The JNF, which, as will be seen, still plays a dominant role in the Israeli land law regime, was originally founded for the purpose of acquiring land in Palestine. According to the memorandum of association of the English company into which the Fund was first incorporated, its object is to acquire land in Palestine “for the purpose of settling Jews on such lands.” The same memorandum of association also prohibits the JNF from selling any land it acquired. JNF land could be leased but only “to any Jews upon any term.” Leading figures in the early years of the Zionist movement had high ambitions for the JNF. Indeed a resolution was passed at the Seventh Zionist Congress rejecting “unplanned, unsystematic and philanthropic small-scale colonization” of Palestine.

Jerusalem: The Latest Chapter In A Century Of Colonialism

One hundred years ago, on 11 December 1917, the British army occupied Jerusalem. As General Allenby’s troops marched through Bab al-Khalil, launching a century of settler colonialism across Palestine, prime minister David Lloyd George heralded the city’s capture as “a Christmas present for the British people”. In a few months’ time, we mark another such anniversary: 70 years since the Palestinian Nakba of 1948, the catastrophic destruction of the Palestinian polity; the violent dispossession of most of its people with their forced conversion into disenfranchised refugees; the colonial occupation, annexation and control of their land; and the imposition of martial law over those who managed to remain.

282 Congress Members Support Making BDS A Crime

By Emily Shugerman for The Independent. A bill that would criminalise boycotts against Israel has been signed by 45 US senators and 237 congressman. The so-called “Israel Anti-Boycott Act” would impose fines of up to $250,000 (£192,000) on any US citizen “engaged in interstate or foreign commerce” who supports a boycott of Israeli goods and services. The US has long defended Israel in territorial disputes in the Middle East, even as the Israeli military has expanded into areas assigned to the Palestinians by international law. This position runs counter to that of the United Nations, which claims Israel’s settlements in occupied Palestinian territory have “no legal validity”, and “constitute flagrant violation of international law”. In their new legislation, members of Congress claim the UN is considering a resolution to withhold assistance from – and prevent trade with – settlements in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights. The Israel Anti-Boycott act would punish any American who supported such measures.

Palestine: Prisoners Will Have To Extend The Hunger Strike

By Ramón Pedregal Casanova for The Dawn. One of the leaders of the hunger strike of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, Samer al Issawi, who made a 9-month long hunger strike, from 2012 and 2013, forcing his captors to comply with his demands and free him, even though he was detained again six months later and sentenced to 20 years of jail. I bring here the words of Samer’s mother, who stated: “I visited my son at the beginning of the hunger strike. The doctors who treated him after his last hunger strike almost two years ago told him that his life might be in danger if he takes part in another hunger strike due to the irreversible damage the first one caused to his organs. My son, after listening to me, said: ‘Mother, you believe in God and in his will. God gives us life and takes it away from us. God is one and death is one as well. Trust Him, I am going to join the strike along my comrades. I want your blessing and forgiveness for causing so much pain to you’.

NLRB Confirms Legality of Union Support for Israel Boycott

By Staff of United Electrical Workers. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has reaffirmed its dismissal an unfair labor practice charge brought by an Israeli law firm against a U.S. union, the United Electrical Workers, over its support of protests against Israeli policies including the union’s endorsement of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) movement. At its national convention in Baltimore August 16-20, 2015, the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) adopted a resolution endorsing the BDS movement to pressure Israel to negotiate peace with the Palestinians and end the occupation. UE is the first national U.S. union to endorse BDS. Read the resolution here. On October 23, the Israeli law firm Shurat Hadin filed a charge with the NLRB alleging that UE’s resolution violated the prohibition in U.S. labor law against “secondary boycotts.” The union disputed the charge, arguing that Shurat Hadin’s action was an attempt to interfere with the First Amendment rights of the union and its members to express opinions on political and international issues, and also that the Israeli firm’s allegation were factually untrue. On January 12, Region 6 of the NLRB dismissed the charge.

Newsletter – A Peek At Empire

By Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. It's impacts are all around us, but it is rarely mentioned. What is it? Empire, and it's time to bring it out of the shadows. We take a peek at the history of US Empire and how it continues to grow and be all-consuming today. The Empire Economy plunders our national treasury and robs us of jobs, education, healthcare and a future while serving transnational corporations. The US military is the biggest single user of fossil fuels which pollutes the planet and worsens the climate crisis. Our 'American Way of War' targets the basic necessities of life like power stations, hospitals and water plants for destruction and turns peaceful people against each other causing chaos and creating a vacuum for extremism and aggression against the US. The Pentagon cannot be audited but demands more every year. The war culture pervades our society.

We are planning a mass mobilization in Washington, DC this November to show the large and diverse opposition to agreements that force us to sacrifice the health and safety of our communities for corporate profits. There will be two days of action preparation followed by three full days of creative events. You are invited to participate in any way that you can.

West Bank’s Day Of Rage

By Ahmad Jaradat for Alternative Information Center - The Palestinian political and Islamic parties issued a shared statement Monday night, calling on Palestinians to demonstrate throughout the West Bank. The interesting new twist in this statement was the call to demonstrate in contact areas with Israeli soldiers, including near checkpoints and the entrances to cities. A general strike was further called for Tuesday afternoon. In Ramallah hundreds of Palestinians clashed with Israeli soldiers at the northern entrance to the city, where an Israeli checkpoint adjacent to the Beit El settlement is located. Soldiers shot live and rubber-coated steel bullets, injuring 18. Israeli soldiers further invaded the northern area of Ramallah, designated as Area A and ostensibly under full security control of the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Shadowy Web Site Creates Blacklist Of Pro-Palestinian Activists

By Josh Nathan-Kazis at the Forward, A new website is publicizing the identities of pro-Palestinian student activists to prevent them from getting jobs after they graduate from college. But the website is keeping its own backers’ identity a secret. “It is your duty to ensure that today’s radicals are not tomorrow’s employees,” a female narrator intones in a slick video posted to the website’s YouTube account. Called Canary Mission, the site has posted profiles of dozens of students and recent graduates, alongside those of well-known activists like Omar Barghouti, founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
