An Honorable Course In Iran: End Sanctions, Resume Dialogue

Last week, Elham Pourtaher, an Iranian graduate student at the State University of New York in Albany, wrote about how U.S. policies cause suffering and trauma far beyond U.S. borders. Her diabetic father, for example, is in danger of losing access to medicines because sanctions against Iranian banks make it nearly impossible to pay for imported goods, including medicine and food. Shortages could lead to thousands of deaths. Pourtaher described “the collective sense of fear caused by the increased sanctions.”

The Power To Withdraw Our Consent From Systems Of Violence

According to the director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, Renata Dwan, the risk of nuclear war is the highest it has been since World War II. Last year, seven plow shares activists entered the Kings Bay Naval Base in Georgia to protest the Trident submarine, calling it "the world's deadliest nuclear weapon," to bring attention to this risk. They poured blood on it and beat on it with hammers to symbolize the biblical statement, to "beat swords into plow shares." We speak with four of the seven, the other three are in prison, about why they took this action, how it connects to the triple evils identified by Martin Luther King of "racism, extreme materialism, and militarism," and what can be done to stop this threat.

Understanding NATO, Ending War

So, given the ongoing military threats – with an expanding range of horrific weapons (including, to nominate just two, ‘more usable’ low yield nuclear weapons and technologies on ‘weather warfare’ offered by the military/nuclear corporate war planners) that threaten previously unimagined outcomes – and interventions by a US-led NATO, with Venezuela and now Iran the latest countries to be directly threatened – see ‘“Dangerous game”: US, Europe and the “betrayal” of Iran’ – as well as a gathering consensus among peace activists and scholars of the importance of stopping NATO (particularly given the many opportunities, beginning with aborting its origin, that have been missed already as explained by Professor Peter Kuznick: see ‘“Obscene” Bipartisan Applause for NATO in Congress’) how do we actually stop NATO?

Risk Of Nuclear War Highest Since WWII

GENEVA - The risk of nuclear weapons being used is at its highest since World War Two, a senior U.N. security expert said on Tuesday, calling it an “urgent” issue that the world should take more seriously. Renata Dwan, director of the U.N. Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), said all states with nuclear weapons have nuclear modernization programs underway and the arms control landscape is changing, partly due to strategic competition between China and the United States. Traditional arms control arrangements are also being eroded by the emergence of new types of war, with increasing prevalence of armed groups and private sector forces and new technologies that blurred the line between offense and defense, she told reporters in Geneva.

Putin-Trump Talk About Ending Nuclear Weapons

A senior Russian diplomat responded positively to President Donald Trump's remarks regarding his desire to seek total denuclearization, saying Moscow was ready to begin working toward that end. Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity via telephone Thursday night, Trump welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin's offer to assist in the U.S.-North Korea peace process. The president said, “We want to get rid of the nuclear weapons,” not just in North Korea, but “we all have to get—Russia has to get rid of them and China has to get rid of them” in comments subsequently supported by Moscow, which had accused Washington of loosening restrictions on its nuclear posture.

Court Denies Plowshares Activists’ Motion To Dismiss Charges

The Kings Bay Plowshares seven anti-nuclear activists received the decision Friday evening from a federal magistrate denying their motions to dismiss the charges, including their motion under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The seven defendants, all Catholics, had testified with expert witnesses during their November 2018 evidentiary hearings and waited fourteen weeks for the final decision. We are already working on our appeal and look forward to appearing before Judge Wood. We realize the struggle to rid the world of nuclear weapons is an uphill one.

Nuclear Weapons Ruined My Life, And I Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way

I want to offer you something different than the barrage of facts and figures around nuclear weapons. But let’s establish the basics. There are nine countries that possess them: France, China, the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Israel, North Korea and — of course — Russia and the United States. Together these nine countries possess a total of 14,575 nuclear weapons, with the United States and Russia accounting for 92 percent of them.

Giving The Bomb To Saudi Arabia’s Dr. Strangelove

The most dangerous foreign policy decision of the Trump administration—and I know this is saying a lot—is its decision to share sensitive nuclear technology with Saudi Arabia and authorize U.S. companies to build nuclear reactors in that country. I spent seven years in the Middle East. I covered the despotic, repressive kingdom as the Middle East bureau chief for The New York Times. And I, along with most Arabists in the United States, have little doubt that giving a nuclear capability to Saudi Arabia under the leadership of the ruthless and amoral Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman would see it embark on a nuclear weapons program and eventually share weaponized technology with Saudi allies and proxies that include an array of radical jihadists and mortal enemies of America.

Green MEPs And Activists Break Into Airbase Demanding Withdrawal Of US Nuclear Bombs

Belgium - The Trump administration has withdrawn the US from the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty and both the US and Russia are building more nuclear weapons. A nuclear arms race has ignited and people are protesting. In Europe, protests were held at a military base that included three Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who were arrested. They unfurled a banner on a runway for F-16 fighter jets at the Kleine Brogel base in east Belgium calling for a nuclear-free Europe, before being taken into custody.

40 Countries Tell US And Russia To Preserve Nuclear Treaty

Switzerland - Mayors, parliamentarians, policy experts and civil society representatives from forty countries – mostly Europe and North America – yesterday sent an open letter, the Basel Appeal for Disarmament and Sustainable Security, to Presidents Putin and Trump and to the leaders of the Russian and US legislatures, calling on them to preserve the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, prevent a new nuclear arms race in Europe and undertake measures to reduce the risk of a nuclear conflict and support global nuclear disarmament.

Read The Scientific American Article The Government Deemed Too Dangerous To Publish

The sordid history of the once-banned article by Hans Bethe, deemed so sensitive that the entire print run was burned, has been re-earthed through FOIA In April 1950, the US federal government raided the offices of Scientific American Magazine to destroy every printed issue. “Three thousand copies already run off were burned, type was melted down, and every galley proof and script impounded.” Three years later, Fahrenheit 451was published without knowledge of this incident.

US Strategic Command Rings In The New Year By Reminding the World America Has Bombs And We’re Not Afraid To Use Them

U.S. Strategic Command on New Year's Eve tweeted a video reminding the world America has nuclear bombs, but unlike the ball at the top of Times Square, it can "drop something much, much bigger." That's literally the comparison they just made. "Peace is our Profession" may be their motto, but USSTRATCOM, as the U.S. Strategic Command is called, didn't appear to stick to that message when they posted the video, complete with the words "Stealth," "Ready," and "Lethal."

In North Korea, Verifying Requires Reconciling

During the Bush years, as it had done previously, Pyongyang showed some willingness to accept verification when it saw Washington moving away from enmity but balked when it did not. In September 2005, a US commitment to reconciliation with the DPRK would open the way to verification—only to be stalled by US failure to follow through. Any attempt to secure access to its nuclear facilities, not to mention its nuclear materials and weapons, will require a sustained US effort to end enmity with North Korea. The message from Pyongyang seems clear: no verification without reconciliation.

The Green New Deal Should Address Militarism

Environmentalists need to contest the Pentagon’s staggering global footprint. The U.S. military is the world’s largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels and the largest source of greenhouse gases, contributing about 5 percent of global warming emissions. Almost 900 of the EPA’s 1,300 Superfund sites are abandoned military bases, weapons-production facilities or weapons-testing sites.

Reviving The Nuclear Disarmament Movement: A Practical Proposal

In late November 2018, Noam Chomsky, the world-renowned public intellectual, remarked that “humanity faces two imminent existential threats: environmental catastrophe and nuclear war.” Curiously, although a widespread environmental movement has developed to save the planet from accelerating climate change, no counterpart has emerged to take on the rising danger of nuclear disaster. Indeed, this danger ― exemplified by the collapse of arms control and disarmament agreements, vast nuclear “modernization” programs by the United States and other nuclear powers, and reckless threats of nuclear war ― has stirred remarkably little public protest and even less public debate during the recent U.S. midterm elections.
