Detroit Police Commissioner Arrested For Questioning City’s Use Of Facial Recognition

Last night, a police commissioner in Detroit was arrested for questioning the city’s use of facial recognition at a public hearing. Commissioner Willie Burton, who is black, was surrounded by police officers and handcuffed from his place at the head of the meeting on Thursday night, shouting “get your hands off me!” as he was taken out of the room with hands behind his back and put into a police car. He was questioning the police department’s use of facial recognition known to be biased against people of color, in a city with a high proportion of black residents.

Puerto Rico Police Clash With Protesters Over Rossello Scandal

July 16 (UPI) -- Puerto Rican police clashed with demonstrators late Monday over Gov. Ricardo Rossello's refusal to give up power, in the wake of a leaked chat log that's tainted his administration. Officers used tear gas and pepper spray to control thousands of protesters in front of Rossello's San Juan home. Rossello is facing growing calls to resign after leaked messages showed what critics say are misogynistic, profane and homophobic comments against women and political opponents.

Chaos erupted on the streets of Hong Kong’s shopping district of Mong Kok on Sunday night as hundreds of protesters fought running battles with the police. Police chased some protesters down and several were subdued by riot police armed with shields.

Concentration Camps Made In The USA, The Battle To Ban Poisons & Police Artillery

Legal wins against herbicides and pesticides are often just the beginning of more battles – and could fall short of the necessary change to protect our land and our soil. Next, the number of refugees worldwide is the highest its ever been, since the the UN started keeping track some 70 years ago. As the US perpetuates war, climate change and bolsters fascism here at home, we can not turn away from the reality we are creating. Finally, Vanessa Beck with Black Alliance for Peace joins us to talk about the 1033 program and the empire's militant home game.

Bath Police Arrest 22 Protesters Outside BIW Before Warship Christening Ceremony

BATH — Police arrested 22 protesters Saturday morning for blocking traffic or gates outside Bath Iron Works leading up to a christening ceremony for the future USS Daniel Inouye. The protests are part of a larger pushback by peace and environmental groups against the United States’ global military presence and, more recently, the military’s contribution to global climate change. Peace and environmental activists gathered in the Portland Public Library Friday demanding BIW convert from making military vessels to wind turbines.

Police Fusion Center Tied To Fake Social Media Accounts

Minneapolis, MN – Unicorn Riot filed a public records request to the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) for information related to the occupation of the 4th Precinct in 2015 after Jamar Clark was killed by police. The documents we received offer a glimpse into the world of the MPD’s Strategic Information Center (SIC) where intelligence analysts are monitoring individuals and protests through fake social media accounts.

The Racist Roots Of American Policing: From Slave Patrols To Traffic Stops

Outrage over racial profiling and the killing of African Americans by police officers and vigilantes in recent years helped give rise to the Black Lives Matter movement. But tensions between the police and black communities are nothing new. There are many precedents to the Ferguson, Missouri protests that ushered in the Black Lives Matter movement. Those protests erupted in 2014 after a police officer shot unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown; the officer was subsequently not indicted. The precedents include the Los Angeles riots that broke out after the 1992 acquittal of police officers for beating Rodney King.

Yellow Finch Tree Sitters Hold Strong As Police And Pipeline Company Attempt Eviction

Today police aided by Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) employees attempted to evict the Yellow Finch tree sit but were not successful. What follows is a report from Appalachians Against Pipelines. The tree sitters are holding strong. We are still here. Today is day 267. At the Yellow Finch tree sits in the path of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, cops have left the scene (for now). MVP is still lurking down the road. We are still asking for local support — if you are available and can come out today during the day, we’d love to see you. If not, donate.

Letter To The DC Metropolitan Police Department

It is not credible to disclaim knowledge of the extensive instances of misconduct over the past week at the Venezuelan Embassy. Repeatedly, the MPD has allowed physical assaults, threats and menacing by right-wing violent thugs against peaceful persons, has allowed them to incommode and block passage on the public sidewalks, has allowed their use of eye-damaging high beam lights and strobes to be shined into peace activists' eyes at close proximity, and their use of high volume blast sirens and horns placed directly against the ears of peace activists.

“No Justice. No Peace. No Private Police.”

“No Justice. No Peace. No Private Police,” was a chant that rang through the Charles Village and Waverly neighborhoods last Wednesday. On the 300th “West Wednesday,” John Hopkins University students and community members gathered together to rally against JHU’s planned private police force and contracts to train employees of the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. While dozens of campus police watched ominously from the sidelines, people marched peacefully in the streets and then rallied inside JHU’s administration building.

7 Arrested After Police Raid Sit-in Against Hopkins Private Police

The university had warned protesters they were subject to arrest after they took over and chained themselves to the building on May 1. Just days earlier, activist Tawanda Jones, whose brother was killed by police in 2013, was threatened with legal action over her participation in the protests (https://therealnews.com/columns/baltimore-activist-threatened-with-legal-action-over-participation-in-hopkins-protests). In a statement, the university cited “grave concerns about the unsafe circumstances in and around Garland Hall and followed multiple offers of amnesty from university officials and warnings from the police if the protesters left the building.”

Puerto Ricans Are Resisting Policing As A Solution To Crisis

In Policing Life and Death: Race, Violence, and Resistance in Puerto Rico, author Marisol LeBrón shows how Puerto Rico’s colonial relationship with the U.S. has shaped policing in the archipelago as a form of “colonial crisis management.” Her new book exposes the ways policing harms marginalized communities and deepens social inequality. In this interview, LeBrón discusses the legacy of punitive “solutions” and the various ways Puerto Ricans are challenging state violence and building alternative forms of justice.

Endless Trials

KEITH DAVIS JR. was supposed to die. He had been on the phone with his girlfriend when four police officers cornered him into a dimly lit garage in West Baltimore. They had mistaken him for a robbery suspect, and they mistook his phone for a gun. After yelling at him to drop the gun, they fired 44 rounds at him. “Baby, I’ma die,” he told his girlfriend over the phone. Then she heard him ask the officers, “Why y’all tryin’ to kill me?”

Fossil Fuel Companies Are Enlisting Police To Crack Down On Protesters

Researchers concluded in January that humanity has a hope, a 64 percent chance, of keeping the temperature rise below the international target of 1.5 degrees Celsius—if the phaseout of fossil fuel infrastructure begins now and every car, plane and power plant in existence gets replaced by a zero-carbon alternative at the end of its life span. “We are basically saying we can’t build anything now that emits fossil fuels,” said Christopher Smith of the University of Leeds, the lead researcher. Meanwhile, the multi-trillion-dollar fossil fuel industry is in the midst of an enormous infrastructure expansion.

Citing School Officials’ Campaign Contributions To Pugh, Hopkins Students Protest Private Police Plan

Occupying a campus building for nearly a week, protesters say plan is tainted by its ties to a “pay-to-play” mayor. They chant every hour, often choosing “No justice. No peace. No private police.” They chant whenever President Ronald J. Daniels passes by, calling on the Johns Hopkins University president to “Ne-go-ti-ate!” And now, after nearly a week camped out in the Garland Hall administration building, students protesting the school’s private police force initiative have another message...
