Inside The CIA, Facial UnRecognition & Bills For Blue Lives

We go inside the #CIA with John Kiriakou - the only person to ever serve jail time for the CIA's torture program - because he blew the whistle on it. He also worked with Gina Haspel, the new chief of the CIA who not only took a large and energetic part in the torture program but destroyed evidence of it as well. John dishes on the CIA paradigm, the war on whistleblowers and the deep state. PLUS, Blue Lives Matter bills have cropped up all over the place recently. And now, the Protect And Serve Act has passed the House and awaits Senate Approval. Here's why that's horrifying and problematic. Speaking of horrifying and problematic, Facial Recognition technology is the new toy for law enforcement - from the FBI to your local police.

Police Union Is Lobbying To Expand Powers To Tase People Who Don’t Pose A Threat

The San Francisco Police Officers Association is aggressively pushing a ballot measure that would allow police to use tasers on members of the public even if they aren't violently resisting. If passed, the city’s police officers would be able to electrocute people who pose no physical threat or resist arrest as a result of mental illness. Last November, San Francisco’s Police Commission approved tasers for the city’s police. This March, it finalized a policy for how those tasers should be used. That policy, which is backed by Police Chief Bill Scott and San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell, requires police to implement de-escalation tactics before using their tasers. However, the San Francisco Police Officers Association, with a membership of roughly 2,200, believes that these criteria are too narrow.

How Durham, NC Became The First U.S. City To Ban Police Exchanges With Israel

Durham, North Carolina became the first city in the country to ban local police exchanges with Israel on April 16, when the city council unanimously passed a resolution opposing any international “military-style” training for police officers. During a heated discussion at City Hall, opponents of the resolutions expressed confusion over the policy’s relevance to Durham, or said they opposed what they saw as unfair targeting of Israel. “There are real problems facing this city, and the Palestinian situation is not one of them,” Richard Ford of Durham’s “Friends of Durham” political action committee said during the public comment period. Durham Mayor Steve Schewel also expressed dismay at what he said were false rumors that Durham had plans to send its police to Israel for training. But Southern solidarity with Palestine has deep precedent. Three years after the famous student Freedom Summer actions in Mississippi in 1964...

Body-Cam Giant Snaps Up Its Biggest Rival To Create Near-Monopoly

Axon, the company formerly known as Taser, has acquired its largest rival, VieVu—setting up a near-monopoly in the market for body-worn cameras. While Axon already has contracts with most large cities in America, VieVu beat out Axon for a number of large contracts, including those for the New York Police Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Phoenix Police Department, among others. Last year, Axon got even more aggressive in pursuing its industry dominance by offering any American law enforcement agency free body cameras and a year’s worth of access to the company’s cloud storage service, Evidence.com. Digital Ally, now one of the company's smaller rivals, did not respond to Ars’ request for comment. While the prevalence of body-worn cameras is accelerating, they are still far from ubiquitous.

Georgia Police Used Fake News From Militia To Plan For Nazi Rally, Emails Show

Newnan, GA – Emails obtained by Unicorn Riot through a public records request to the Coweta County Sheriff suggest that law enforcement relied on false ‘alt-right’ posts in their planning for an April 21, 2018 rally by the neo-nazi National Socialist Movement (NSM). The NSM ended up only drawing about 30 supporters but were met by several hundred anti-racist counter-protesters. Most media coverage of events in Newnan focused on the police response, which included over 800 officers who aggressively attacked and arrested antifascists, at times directly threatening protesters with assault rifles at point blank range. Evidence shows that the heavy-handed tactics used by Newnan police on April 21 were motivated in part by disinformation, created and shared by members of a far-right militia, which law enforcement had accepted as fact.

Austin Police Cadets Expose Training To View Public As Cockroaches

Several cadets have quit and exposed the Austin police department in Texas for training cops to think of the public as cockroaches they are at war with.  Rather than training cops to protect and serve, Austin PD appears to want an entire elite class of warriors who view the public as less than human. According to a group of 10 former Austin Police Department recruits who wanted to become peace officers, just like the military, the Austin PD is training  “warriors” instead of “guardians.” Although this should hardly come as a surprise because the Supreme Court has already declared that cops don’t have to protect or “guard” you at all.  They are to follow orders, extort (and sometimes flat out steal) money for their department, and enforce laws that are often tyrannical and the very definition of a human rights violation.

US City’s Ban On Police Training In Israel Builds Momentum Against Racist Violence

It's The Real News. I'm Ben Norton. The City Council in Durham, North Carolina made history this month when it voted unanimously to prohibit police exchanges with Israel. Thousands of police officers from departments throughout the United States traveled to Israel to receive military-style training with Israeli military and police forces, some of which enforce an illegal Israeli military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank. And it's not just local police that have trained in Israel, but also sheriffs, Border Patrol agents, ICE officers, and FBI agents. Durham is the first city in the U.S. to ban police exchanges with Israel.Jewish Voice for Peace, the largest grassroots Jewish organization working for the full equality of all people in Israel-Palestine, published a statement applauding the Durham City Council measure as a victory for human rights.

Pittsburgh Police Prepare For Possible Riots If Trump Fires Mueller

Pittsburgh police have issued a memo to department detectives to prepare for possible protests should President Trump fire special counsel Robert Mueller.  The memo, issued by Victor Joseph, commander of the Pittsburgh bureau of police, instructed detectives to begin wearing a full uniform and carrying riot gear “until further notice”. “There is a belief that President Trump will soon move to fire Special Prosecutor Mueller. This would result in a large protest within 24 hours of the firing,” the emails states. “The protest would be semi-spontaneous and more than likely happen on short notice,” the memo read and was issued based on “information of a potential large scale protest in the Central Business District”. The police department appeared to be acting on information gathered from a group, Nobody is Above the Law, that has been preparing for demonstrations should the president move to fire Mueller.

Ex-President Lula Defies Deadline To Surrender To Brazil Police

Brazil's embattled former President Luiz Inacio 'Lula' da Silva has defied a court order to turn himself into Curitiba police by 5 p.m. local time today to commence his 12-year jail sentence for corruption, triggering a stand-off between the presidential hopeful and Brazilian authorities. Federal authorities have reportedly said they will not execute any arrest warrant until Saturday at the earliest. Late Friday night, it emerged that Lula is planning to attend a mass at 9am Saturday – at the same metallurgical union in Sao Paolo in which he is currently ensconced – to commemorate the passing of his late wife Marisa Leticia. Earlier on Friday, lawyers representing the man who dominated Brazilian politics between 2003 and 2011 submitted a fresh habeas corpus writ after his previous bid to avoid incarceration while his appeals play out was shot down by a 6-5 vote in the Supreme Court shortly after midnight Wednesday.

Victory Over Military Cop Convention

Militarization of the police intensified after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was folded into the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on March 1, 2003, just a year and a half after 09/11. FEMA had operated as an independent federal agency from 1979 to 2003, with an independent cabinet seat from 1993 to 2000, but the Homeland Security Act of 2002 turned it into a DHS sub-agency, despite the strong objections of its director, Michael Brown, who stated that the change would “fundamentally sever FEMA from its core functions, shatter agency morale, and break longstanding, effective, and tested relationships with states and first responder stakeholders.” Three years later, in 2005, DHS/FEMA’s overly militarized and inefficient response to Hurricane Katrina proved Brown to be prescient.

Black Parkland Students Air Concerns About Campus Police

As Truthdig columnist Sonali Kolhatkar points out in her column this week, black Americans are eight times more likely to be killed by firearms than those who are white, and they are disproportionately affected by police violence. Kolhatkar also lauded the students who organized the March for Our Lives for their inclusive approach, saying that they “did a far better job of centering the voices of people of color than the mainstream media did.” But the students at Wednesday’s press conference expressed concern that in the aftermath of the shooting, increasing police presence at their predominantly white school could lead to them being unfairly targeted. Seventeen-year-old Kai Koerber said that more law enforcement on campus could lead to him and other black students being treated like “potential criminals.”

‘No Cop Academy’: Activists Stage Day-Long Demonstration Against Police Academy To Be Built In Chicago

The protest was the latest in a series of actions organized by a coalition of more than 50 community groups dubbed “No Cop Academy.” Youth of color in Chicago staged a day-long demonstration at City Hall on Wednesday to voice their opposition to the planned construction of a new $95 million police academy to be built on the city’s West Side. The protest was the latest in a series of actions organized by a coalition of more than 50 community groups dubbed “No Cop Academy.” “If you’re going to make a decision so-called ‘for our community,’ then you should ask the community, you shouldn’t just make the decision for us,” said Sumaria Howell, a 16 year-old student at Simeon Career Academy and member of the group Simeon Young Activists, who are part of the coalition. “We know what we want because we’re here. You guys aren’t in our community, you don’t know what it’s like for us to be out here.”

A Deep State Darling And A Real Alternative To Police

March is Women's History Month – and while it's always a good idea to recognize the powerful role of women in the fight for justice, not all women who have power wield it well – or deserve our pride and recognition. The fact that women too can rise to the position of murderers and oppressors is no point of pride. The goal of feminism is not to raise predominantly white women up to the level of blood money moguls. The goal is to fight for justice, to fight for all women, and the oppressed of any gender. In this segment, we take a look at a deep state darling on the rise in the midst of Nazi lines and war crimes.

Disarm Cops First. Reflections On Narratives Of Exceptional And Systematic Violence After Parkland Shootings

On February 18th, 2018, A nineteen year old white man entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with his rifle, and murdered 17 people. He was later arrested peacefully by police. The shooter’s social media profiles indicate a racist obsessed with white nationalism and a hatred of women, and a promoter of fascist messages and imagery. He was reportedly obsessed with guns, and his behavior had been reported to law enforcement repeatedly. Law enforcement never took action, which has itself been widely criticized. The reasons for this inaction are not hard to pin down for those willing to look: Cruz, the shooter – was a white man with a gun, and therefore not a threat. In the aftermath, a Neo Nazi organization calling itself the Republic of Florida claimed Cruz as a member.

Freedom Rider: Why The Shooting Will Continue

Apparently there is nothing worse in America than the act of shooting white people. Ever since the latest attack at a Florida high school there has been talk of little else. The school shooting enveloped every other issue and was used to vilify Russia, the FBI, Bernie Sanders and the National Rifle Association all at once. One cannot watch a Youtube video without being subjected to the NRA’s public relations juggernaut meant to quiet a population which had forgotten about shootings for a while. America has a unique history with firearms. The settler colonial state enshrined gun ownership into the constitution because of a determination to maintain chattel slavery and the violent enforcement which had to go with it.
