For several weeks now, much of the Lebanese population has turned on the country’s traditional political leaders and wrought havoc on the corrupt domestic political system. Those who have ruled the country for decades have offered little in the way of reforms, have paid little attention to the infrastructure, and done little or nothing to provide job opportunities outside the circle of their clients. The protestors were also driven into the street by the US measures strangling the Lebanese economy and preventing most of the 7-8 million expatriates from transferring financial support (around $8 billion per year) to their relatives back home.

It’s always good for reporters to have a chance to work overseas, even if it’s just on a temporary assignment. It broadens your professional experience and mental horizon. Sadly, reporting duties sometimes come with a price. Of the six reporters sent by Hong Kong Golden, an online forum, to cover the nationwide protests in France, four have been injured just days after arrival. Two were reportedly injured by sting grenades used by French anti-riot police; one was allegedly pepper-sprayed and then kicked by an officer; and another suffered a sprain while running away from a protest scene.

Eliecer Flores has been out in the streets of Santiago protesting Chile’s political and economic model since day one. He had to take a break, though, after one of the pellet projectiles fired by police hit him in the right eye. “My eyeball burst,” Flores, 30, told Toward Freedom. “I got to keep the eye, but not any vision.” A father of a nine-month-old baby and proud stepdad of a 13-year-old, Flores is originally from Cañete, a city of 34,000 in the Biobio region, 400 miles south of the capital. Growing up in poverty, Flores witnessed injustice and theft by the government, he said.

Kennedy International Airport Nov. 26, loudly chanting that American Airlines’ food contractors should give their workers a raise and decent health care. The protest was one of 16 at major national airports on behalf of 20,000 airline-catering workers, both those at subcontractors LSG Sky Chefs and Gate Gourmet and those directly employed by United Airlines.

On the heels of Friday's global youth-led climate strike, thousands of activists staged demonstrations at three coal mines in Germany Saturday to protest the government's plan to phase out coal by 2038, which activists say isn't soon enough. The German news agency dpa reported that "protesters ran into the Jänschwalde and Welzow-Süd open-cast mining sites in the eastern state of Brandenburg, as well as the United Schleenhain lignite mining area in neighboring Saxony." Tens of thousands of protesters, primarily in Europe and Asia, hit the streets on Friday to make a fresh call for action against global warming, hoping to raise pressure on world leaders days before a UN climate summit. Carrying signs that read "One planet, one fight" and "The sea is rising, so must we", thousands flocked to Berlin's Brandenburg Gate for the latest "Fridays for Future" protest inspired by 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg. In total, about 630,000 people demonstrated across more than 500 cities in Germany, the Fridays for Future movement said.

The legislation makes it a felony, punishable with a $10,000 fine and up to six years in prison, to protest, trespass or cause damage to “critical infrastructure,” including transmission lines, fencing, posts and oil pipelines.

Over 2,800 People Wounded In Chile Since Start Of Protests

The National Institute of Human Rights of Chile ( NHRI ) on Monday reported that 2,808 people have been wounded during the nearly 40 days of demonstrations in the South American country. According to figures provided by the Chilean agency, 232 people suffered eye injuries (75 percent of the cases of gunshots), of the 2,808 wounded that have been found in different hospitals. As of Monday, 437 people were injured because of firearms, while 1,180, the majority, were victims of pellets shot by state agents, the NHRI reported.

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the so-called Velvet Revolution, hundreds of thousands demonstrated in the Czech capital of Prague on Saturday against the corrupt right-wing government led by Prime Minister Andrej Babis. According to the police and the protest organisers, some 250,000 people participated. In June, 300,000 people protested against the government, and recent weeks have witnessed a series of demonstrations with more than 100,000 participants. The protests are primarily directed against Babis, who is accused of abusing his political office for personal and business gains.
