As appalling details of the conditions at immigrant detention centers in the U.S. continue to pour in—with one doctor recently comparing them to "torture facilities"—a coalition of rights groups on Friday announced nationwide "Close the Camps" demonstrations for next week to protest the Trump administration's treatment of migrant children. "We've seen the images and heard the stories coming out of child detention centers," said MoveOn.org, one of the groups helping to organize the events, which are set to take place Tuesday, July 2.

BATH — Police arrested 22 protesters Saturday morning for blocking traffic or gates outside Bath Iron Works leading up to a christening ceremony for the future USS Daniel Inouye. The protests are part of a larger pushback by peace and environmental groups against the United States’ global military presence and, more recently, the military’s contribution to global climate change. Peace and environmental activists gathered in the Portland Public Library Friday demanding BIW convert from making military vessels to wind turbines.

I viscerally remember a particular protest I participated in with Portland Tenants United that involved using tents as a symbol of the impending homelessness that will result if the landlords keep on raising the rent the way they’ve been doing. It’s a common, useful symbol, that communicates well in a picture, a tent. But there was that one protest when a bunch of actually homeless teenagers asked us, “what are you going to do with those tents when you’re done?” If one of the tents had been mine, I probably would have just given it to the kids who asked about it.

The protest took place outside the General Dynamics-owned Bath Iron Works (BIW) where some of the U.S. Navy's most advanced and lethal warships are built. The group blocked traffic near the shipyard as buses carried guests to a ceremonial "christening" of a new Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. Holding signs that read, "Tell Congress: Fund Climate Solutions, Not Endless War" and "Bring Our War Dollars Home," supporters of the action stood on sidewalks nearby as those who risked arrest were taken into custody by local police.

Czechs turned out in their thousands Sunday in Prague to call for the ousting of Prime Minister Andrej Babis, in the biggest show of public discontent in decades. The rally in Letna park was the culmination of a series of demonstrations in recent weeks against Babis, who has faced investigations over alleged fraud and conflicts of interest. Organizers said they believed that about 250,000 people had attended Sunday's rally, from all around the country, but this figure could not be verified.

One of the most popular images from Sudan’s protests that led to the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir is that of Alaa Salah – a young, female university student. The image of her speaking to a crowd highlighted the presence and role women had in the uprising. Entrances to National Portrait Gallery blocked by performance activists, preventing guests from entering the gallery. A group of thirty artists, performers and activists arrived at the National Portrait Gallery to disrupt the announcement ceremony of the BP Portrait Award this week. While some of the group linked arms in doorways and chained themselves to gates to prevent party guests from entering the building, others handed out a fake awards programme that challenged BP’s long-standing sponsorship of the award.
