Activists Shut Down UK-Based Israeli Arms Factories ‘In Solidarity With Palestinian People’

Elbit is directly involved in the murder of Palestinians by the occupying Israeli forces. They work closely with the Israeli military to develop increasingly lethal weapons, which are then tested on Palestinians and sold as ‘battle-tested’ to governments around the world, including the British government. It is deplorable that they have four factories in the UK where they… manufacture their deadly weapons with impunity.

Disrupt, Sabotage, Shut-Down: #ClosetheCamps Resistance Timeline

Almost one year to the day that the Abolish ICE movement first kicked off across the United State; blockading ICE offices and in some cases, closing facilities. The movement has now sprung up again, in the wake of the tragic deaths of multiple migrant workers and their children and Trump’s call for mass roundups and ethnic cleansing. Like in the years following the depression, Trump is hoping to tap into far-Right bred resentment against migrant workers in order to distract from his administration’s blatant assault on poor and working people and the deepening social...

#NeverAgainIsNow: 36 Arrested As Hundreds Of Jewish Protesters Block Road to Migrant Detention Center

Rejecting the notion that denouncing the Trump administration's immigrant detention centers as "concentration camps" does harm to the memory of the Holocaust, 200 Jewish people demonstrated at a facility in New Jersey Sunday evening and demanded the release of the thousands of immigrants in U.S. custody. Grassroots group Never Again Action called for all detention centers to be closed and for the U.S. government to protect asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants...

Nationwide ‘Close The Camps’ Demonstrations Announced To Protest Horrific Conditions At Trump Detention Centers

As appalling details of the conditions at immigrant detention centers in the U.S. continue to pour in—with one doctor recently comparing them to "torture facilities"—a coalition of rights groups on Friday announced nationwide "Close the Camps" demonstrations for next week to protest the Trump administration's treatment of migrant children. "We've seen the images and heard the stories coming out of child detention centers," said MoveOn.org, one of the groups helping to organize the events, which are set to take place Tuesday, July 2.

“We Are In The Next Phase Of The Struggle”

The negotiations between the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the opposition in Sudan—interrupted after the crackdown on protests in Khartoum on June 3—will resume towards the establishment of a civilian government, said activist and journalist Ahmed Kaballo. “For many of us involved in the revolution, this is stage two and we are certainly in the next phase of the struggle,” he remarked. Born in Leeds, England, from a family of Sudanese origin—his father, Dr. Sidgi Kaballo, is a member of the Central Committee of the Sudanese Communist Party,—Kaballo spoke to EL UNIVERSAL in English to address the current political situation in the northeastern African country.

Bath Police Arrest 22 Protesters Outside BIW Before Warship Christening Ceremony

BATH — Police arrested 22 protesters Saturday morning for blocking traffic or gates outside Bath Iron Works leading up to a christening ceremony for the future USS Daniel Inouye. The protests are part of a larger pushback by peace and environmental groups against the United States’ global military presence and, more recently, the military’s contribution to global climate change. Peace and environmental activists gathered in the Portland Public Library Friday demanding BIW convert from making military vessels to wind turbines.

The United Tent Cities Of America

I viscerally remember a particular protest I participated in with Portland Tenants United that involved using tents as a symbol of the impending homelessness that will result if the landlords keep on raising the rent the way they’ve been doing. It’s a common, useful symbol, that communicates well in a picture, a tent. But there was that one protest when a bunch of actually homeless teenagers asked us, “what are you going to do with those tents when you’re done?” If one of the tents had been mine, I probably would have just given it to the kids who asked about it.

‘Fund Climate Solutions, Not Endless War’: 22 Arrested Demanding US Build Windmills, Not Warships

The protest took place outside the General Dynamics-owned Bath Iron Works (BIW) where some of the U.S. Navy's most advanced and lethal warships are built. The group blocked traffic near the shipyard as buses carried guests to a ceremonial "christening" of a new Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. Holding signs that read, "Tell Congress: Fund Climate Solutions, Not Endless War" and "Bring Our War Dollars Home," supporters of the action stood on sidewalks nearby as those who risked arrest were taken into custody by local police.

Czechs Stage Biggest Anti-Gov’t Protest Demanding Ouster Of PM

Czechs turned out in their thousands Sunday in Prague to call for the ousting of Prime Minister Andrej Babis, in the biggest show of public discontent in decades. The rally in Letna park was the culmination of a series of demonstrations in recent weeks against Babis, who has faced investigations over alleged fraud and conflicts of interest. Organizers said they believed that about 250,000 people had attended Sunday's rally, from all around the country, but this figure could not be verified.

The Revolt Of The Fearless Generation

When in early February Algeria’s ailing octogenarian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his intention to run for the presidency for a fifth term, millions of Algerians took to the streets in response. After weeks of rallies, Bouteflika was forced to resign on April 2, only to be replaced by a triad of government cronies: Abdelkader Bensalah as interim-president, Noureddine Bedoui as prime minister and Major General Ahmed Gaid Salah, who has emerged as the key power broker in the country.

70 Arrested Outside New York Times Demanding Paper Treat Climate Like The Crisis It Is

Hundreds of people descended on the headquarters of the New York Times on Saturday to demand the "paper of record" drastically improve its coverage of the global climate crisis and specifically demanded its reporters refer to the situation as a "climate emergency" in alignment with what the world's scientific community is warning. Coordinated by Extinction Rebellion NYC, 70 people were reported arrested after the group staged a sit-in on Eight Avenue in midtown Manhattan in order to bring attention to the failure of the paper—and that of the journalism industry overall...

Canada Enables Corrupt Haitian President To Remain In Power

At the front of a protest against Haiti’s president last week a demonstrator carried a large wooden cross bearing the flags of Canada, France and the US. The Haiti Information Project tweeted that protesters “see these three nations as propping up the regime of President Jovenel Moïse. It is also recognition of their role in the 2004 coup.” Almost entirely ignored by the Canadian media, Haitian protesters regularly criticize Canada. On dozens of occasions since Jean Bertrand Aristide’s government was overthrown in 2004 marchers have held signs criticizing Canadian policy...

The Victories – And Continuing Struggles – Of Women In Sudan

One of the most popular images from Sudan’s protests that led to the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir is that of Alaa Salah – a young, female university student. The image of her speaking to a crowd highlighted the presence and role women had in the uprising. While the video challenged narratives prevalent in global media – which sometimes portray African and Muslim women as victims who lack agency – Alaa Salah’s courage is but an extension of the roles that women have played throughout Sudan’s history. Warrior queens and queen mothers had crucial power in Sudan’s ancient kingdom of Kush and its metropolis, Meroe (circa 1069 BCE to 350 CE).

American Gov’t, NGOs Fuel And Fund Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Protests

HONG KONG — Protesters in Hong Kong attempted to storm the parliament on Tuesday in opposition to an amendment to the autonomous territory’s extradition law with mainland China. The protest’s messaging and the groups associated with it, however, raise a number of questions about just how organic the movement is. Some of the groups involved receive significant funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a CIA soft-power cutout that has played a critical role in innumerable U.S. regime-change operations.

BP Portrait Award Protests

Entrances to National Portrait Gallery blocked by performance activists, preventing guests from entering the gallery. A group of thirty artists, performers and activists arrived at the National Portrait Gallery to disrupt the announcement ceremony of the BP Portrait Award this week. While some of the group linked arms in doorways and chained themselves to gates to prevent party guests from entering the building, others handed out a fake awards programme that challenged BP’s long-standing sponsorship of the award.
