100+ More Boxes Discovered In The Mumia Abu-Jamal Case

A stunning turn of events has hope for Mumia’s freedom rising. Shortly after the discovery of six previously unreleased boxes (from Mumia’s original 1982 trial), the District Attorney has revealed that the storage unit contained an additional 100+ boxes.  These boxes have not yet been inventoried and could contain key evidence in many other cases. Mumia’s attorneys have access to the first set of six boxes, but there has been no report, yet, on what evidence has been found and whether it can be used to argue for a new trial.

Fulfilling The Prophecy: The Indigenous Peoples March

The Mayan prophecy that I have been raised with teaches that this time in history is an era of great significance for global human consciousness. Through our prophecy, we are taught that as of December 21, 2012, a new age of human consciousness was born. In this new era of consciousness for the first time in the history of our species, the mind of the North and the mind of the South could meet and see from one another’s perspective.

Racism Is A Far Too Common Experience For Native People

Due to its unusual growth spurt, this narrow-minded activity is now openly assailing “people of color,” physically and emotionally. An obvious activity is to tell people to return to where they originated from. Their profanity is intense and clearly meant to instill fear and hurt emotions. This unfounded hatred was once done secretly, now it is out in the open. The national government has become an obvious nesting site for this violent bigotry. Also, it is obvious to see that it has infiltrated all levels of local government, including courts, police, jail, and social services. These bigots are of European Caucasoid origin, educated, illiterate, elderly, young, rich and poor.

The Scott Warren Case Is Part Of A Crackdown On Aid To Migrants

He offered food, water, and clothing to migrants on a deadly stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border. Now he’s facing twenty years in prison. Humanitarian groups fear the situation will only get worse. A year ago, two undocumented Central American immigrants who crossed into Arizona from Mexico found themselves in especially dire straits. The two immigrants, Kristen Perez-Villanueva and Jose Arnaldo Sacaria-Goday, had dropped their backpacks containing food and water while being chased by U.S. Border Patrol agents. Their journey into Pima County, on the Arizona side of the border, was high risk. More than 2,100 bodies of undocumented immigrants, many of them never identified, have been found there since 2001, according to the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Dreams Deferred: How Enriching The 1% Widens The Racial Wealth Divide

January 15, 2019, the release date of this report, would have been the 90th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King envisioned a future in which deep racial inequalities were eradicated and he worked tirelessly towards that mission. His tragic assassination occurred while he was organizing the Poor Peoples Campaign, his last great effort to ensure economic justice as a cornerstone of civil rights. In light of Dr. King’s pursuit of economic justice, this report highlights how historic racial wealth disparities have been perpetuated and increased by the trend towards extreme inequality in the United States. It also puts the racial wealth divide in the context of overall wealth inequality trends.

Corporate And Banking Interests Profit From Desecration Of Black Maryland Graveyard

In the grand scheme of things it didn’t even register a blip. Four people arrested in an obscure auditorium in a place whose name has a certain regal air to it -- Kensington. But this wasn’t somewhere in England. No, it was in Maryland, well south of the Mason-Dixon Line, in a county with the disgraceful heritage of kidnapping, enslavement, lynching, Black breeding farms, covenants to keep Blacks and Jews sequestered and ethnic cleansing high on the list of priorities that have informed every county official since before the Emancipation Proclamation and their systematic erasure of that history both physically and from public consciousness.

Brazilian Indigenous Respond To Bolsonaro: ‘We Are Not Animals In Zoos, We Are People In Our Homeland’

The Bolsonaro government’s racist attacks on indigenous peoples, the administrative change in the Agricultural portfolio, and responsibility for the demarcation of original lands are already provoking an immediate reaction from the organized and autonomous communities that survive and struggle in the national territory. More than 500 years after the European invasion and a systematic policy of extermination, 305 ethnic groups still resist, occupying little more than 12% of Brazilian territory.

Legal Weed Is Great, But Black And Brown Communities Can’t Be Left Behind

In March 2017, Illinois State Rep. Kelly Cassidy and Sen. Heather Steans began co-drafting the Tax & Regulate Cannabis like Alcohol bill. In the nearly two years since, Chicago NORML, a local chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, has encouraged Illinois legislators to prioritize social equity and criminal justice in the final version of the bill.  In a January 2018 speech to industry stakeholders, then-candidate and now Illinois governor-elect JB Pritzker promised to “intentionally include black and brown entrepreneurs” in managing legal marijuana businesses in the state in order to address “historically systemic racism.”

A Call For National Mobilization To Oppose NATO, War And Racism

April 4, 2019, will mark the 51st anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the internationally revered leader in struggles against racism, poverty and war. And yet, in a grotesque desecration of Rev. King’s lifelong dedication to peace, this is the date that the military leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have chosen to celebrate NATO’s 70th anniversary by holding its annual summit meeting in Washington, D.C. This is a deliberate insult to Rev. King and a clear message that Black lives and the lives of non-European humanity, and indeed the lives of the vast majority, really do not matter.

How Advocates Convinced Police Chiefs To Dump Israel Junket

About two years ago, Jewish Voice for Peace launched the Deadly Exchange campaign which seeks to end ties between US police forces and Israel’s military-industrial complex. Activists have highlighted the harm those collaborations do to people fighting for their rights in Palestine and across the US. Police departments in the United States are listening and some are refusing the be "educated" by a police force that is a brutal occupying army that violates human rights. How did activists accomplish this?

The Decline Of African-American & Latinx Wealth Since The Great Recession

While many studies have documented the wide disparity in income between whites on the one hand and African-Americans and Hispanics on the other, the gap in wealth is even greater. In seminal work on the subject, Oliver and Shapiro (1995) document and analyse the sources of the wealth differences between blacks and whites and discuss some of the deleterious effects of low wealth on the wellbeing of black families – including access to decent housing and education, poor health, lower longevity, and the like.

The Migration World Pact: Wishes And Realities

The Global Compact for Migration is a document that isn’t actually legally binding. Its objective is to promote models of agreements between different countries or regional organizations. Although this isn’t necessarily a negative thing per se, when we examine the specific treaty provisions we observe some of its true objectives. The approach is completely securitarian since it promotes a border management system that criminalizes everyone who dares to cross it, advocating for a selective migration model. That means that the States can pick who are welcomed in their countries to satisfy the interests of the market.

The Bolton Speech On Africa: A Case Of The Wolf And The Foxes

Malcolm X reminded us that we had to be careful about the difference between the wolf and the fox. The wolf for black people were the hardcore, racist white folks with the hoods and clearly articulated stance in support of white supremacy. The fox, on the other hand were the liberals who were supposed to be our friends. Their ultimate support for white supremacy was always just as deadly but sugarcoated in diversionary language like “humanitarian intervention” and the “responsibility to protect.” The game, according to Malcolm, was that black folks would recognize the danger of the wolf and run from the wolf straight into the jaws of the fox with the consequence being just as fatal because both the fox...

How A Mother Learned To Speak For The Voiceless Behind Prison Walls

In my opinion, they use black and brown bodies of our family members to create jobs for white men who would otherwise be poor like those that filled the prisons. The urban cities provide a constant supply and job security to the rural towns of Pennsylvania. When my son arrived at prison, I had the normal fears of him being very young in an adult prison around older men who may be predators. I also had fears that he would be caught up between gangs. I soon learned that the most notorious gang in the prison system was not the Crips and Bloods but the C’s and the O’s as I liked to call the gang-like corrections officers.

Israel: Ethnic Cleansing, Land Theft, Apartheid And Jim Crow

In recent weeks, racism against Palestinian people and the expansion of apartheid-Jim Crow policies have escalated. The Israel lobby and its supporters attacked freedom of speech in the United States, showing how far they will go to prevent the US public from being aware of their behavior. If more people in the US become aware of the truth about Israel's genocidal policies, the economic lifeline and political protection of the United States will disappear.
