Regime Change

A Tale Of Two Protests

The rebellions in Hong Kong and Minneapolis have received vastly different responses from the U.S. ruling class. In Minneapolis, masses of people took to the streets on May 26th to express their outrage over the police murder of George Floyd and the many Black Americans who have shared a similar fate. The rebellion quickly spread to cities across the country with corporations, police stations, and even the CNN headquarters in Atlanta, GA all facing some form of property destruction. Protestors in Hong Kong have been treated with honor from the corporate media in stark contrast to the homegrown uprisings occurring in U.S. cities.

Venezuela: More Mercenaries Arrested

A number of mercenaries had been killed and others arrested in La Guaira on 3 May while trying to disembark in Venezuela as part of a plot against the Maduro government. On 4 May, another eight mercenaries were arrested in the coastal town of Chuao in Aragua state, amongst them two former US special forces veterans. As we explained yesterday, one of the organisers of the plot is US mercenary and former US Army Green Beret Jordan Goudreau, who claims to have signed a contract with Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó to organise the military incursion. Goudreau claims that Guaidó reneged on the contract and that he was never paid but decided to go ahead with the plan regardless. According to Goudreau, who is currently in Florida where he runs mercenary agency Silvercorp US, those detained or killed on Sunday in Macuto, La Guaira, were part of a larger group of 60 mercenaries, mainly Venezuelan army deserters.

US And Colombia Drive Drug Trade

Red Lines host Anya Parampil speaks with Pino Arlacchi, the former Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Prevention, about the US decision to charge Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with drug trafficking. Arlacchi explains that in his 40 years of anti-narcotic work, he never came across evidence of Venezuela’s involvement in the drug trade – instead saying that the US and Colombia drive drug production and consumption. As an expert on the Italian mafia, Arlacchi says the US government is actually the party behaving like an organized crime unit in its treatment of Venezuela. Arlacchi also discusses his work at the UN, which included a push to end the heroin trade in Afghanistan. He says his efforts were undermined by US officials after the 2001 invasion of the country.

Sanctions: Unilateral Coercive Measures For Regime Change In Venezuela

In discussing the issue of “sanctions” there are two main points that need to be made. One is the use of the correct terminology when referring to the government actions that the US, Canada and the EU take in order to achieve regime change. The second is of course the impact that those actions have.

OAS Head Luis Almagro’s New Term Promises More Corruption, Cronyism And Coup-Plotting

In a result that surprised no one, the US-favored Luis Almagro was re-elected as Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS). For the next five years, Almagro will lead the oldest multilateral organization in the world, overseeing the affairs of member states comprising the Western hemisphere.

Studies Say Morales Won Fairly, UN & Latin American Institutions Must Take Action – Ex-UN Official

The latest statistical analyses say that the Organisation of American States' conclusions about the alleged fraud in Bolivia’s October vote don't hold water. Ex-UN official Alfred de Zayas has explained what steps could be taken by international and regional bodies in the aftermath of the exposure and shed light on the US role in the Bolivian coup.

US House Rams Through Nicaragua Regime-Change Bill With Zero Opposition

As the Donald Trump administration’s year-long coup attempt against Venezuela spirals out in failure, the US government has taken aim at Nicaragua with increasing ferocity, in a bid to topple its democratically elected, leftist Sandinista government. Washington’s pressure escalated further on March 9 when the US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution in a voice vote without any opposition that demanded more sanctions...

A Case Study Of Corporate Media Disinformation

Some alternative media have exposed the US government and its corporate media fake news reporting on Russian “election interference,” on Venezuela, the war on Syria, China’s Xinjiang and Hong Kong, Nicaragua, Palestine, among others. One of the longest running media disinformation campaigns has been directed at Cuba, well covered in Keith Bolender’s Manufacturing the Enemy: The Media War Against Cuba.1 This thoroughly documented work is a good antidote to the constant anti-Cuba disinformation we are subjected to, which inevitably influences all of us. According to well-known Goebbels quote, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it” —  true, but actually a lie that Goebbels ever said this.

Who Will Win Bolivia’s Elections?

At this point in the year, Bolivia should be announcing an election date other than the presidential election in May. According to last year’s schedule, the regional elections (departments and municipalities) were scheduled to take place in the second half of this month. However, the interruption of the democratic order altered absolutely everything that was planned...

Inside The World Uyghur Congress: The US-Backed Right-Wing Regime Change Network Seeking The ‘Fall Of China’

In recent years, few stories have generated as much outrage in the West as the condition of Uyghur Muslims in China. Reporting on the issue is typically represented through seemingly spontaneous leaks of information and expressions of resistance by Uyghur human rights activists struggling to be heard against a tyrannical Chinese government. True or not, nearly everything that appears in Western media accounts of China’s Uyghur Muslims is the product of a carefully conceived media campaign generated by an apparatus of right-wing, anti-communist Uyghur separatists funded and trained by the US government. A central gear in Washington’s new Cold War against China, this network has a long history of relationships with the US national security state and far-right ultra-nationalists.

Elliott Abrams Disrupted Over ‘Maximum Pressure March’ Campaign Against Venezuela

Members of CODEPINK interrupted a speech by Elliott Abrams hosted by The Alexander Hamilton Society at SAIS, the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in D.C. Abrams, named Special Representative on Venezuela by President Donald Trump in January 2019, oversees the administration’s regime change efforts in Venezuela. The administration’s rhetoric has become significantly more aggressive in 2020, with Trump himself threatening to “smash” and destroy the legitimate elected government of Venezuela. The State Department has followed suit, recently declaring that the “Monroe Doctrine 2.0” is in effect and that this month will be known as “maximum pressure March.” In addition to intensifying its sanctions against Venezuela, the Trump administration has threatened a military blockade and has recently met with the presidents of Brazil and Colombia to coordinate their regime change efforts.

The Washington Post Must Answer For Its False Bolivia Coverage

President Evo Morales won re-election in Bolivia’s presidential election last October 20, as pre-election polls predicted. He received 47% of the vote in an election with 88% turnout. He beat his nearest rival by just over 10 percentage points, which meant a second round was not required.

Guaido Left Out In The Cold At Gatineau Lima Group Meeting

The peoples of the world must not forget the Trudeau government’s role in Latin America and the Caribbean, the main thrust of which lately, being the attempt to destroy the Bolivarian Revolution. For the first time since Juan Guaido’s auto-proclamation as so-called interim president of Venezuela in Jan. 2019, a meeting of the Lima group (with its numerous political statements) has failed to even mention his name.

Months After Supporting A Deadly Coup, WaPo Admits Bolivia’s Elections Were Clean

The Washington Post published an op-ed yesterday from a research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology showing that there was no fraud in the October elections in Bolivia after all. The Post had for months claimed that President Evo Morales won the election fraudulently, thus justifying the U.S.-backed coup that ousted him weeks later.
