Repression

Don’t Buy The Establishment’s Outrage. Real Journalism Is Their Enemy.

That’s true: we must show solidarity with all journalists in the face of attacks on fundamental press freedoms. Trump went on to make up accusations that Acosta ‘placed his hands’ on a young female White House staffer. And then the president revoked his press pass. All of Trump’s actions here are wrong and dangerous. However, our solidarity should include Acosta – not end with him. The establishment’s demonisation of groundbreaking journalism Julian Assange, for example, is the founder of a publication that has won almost 20 prestigious journalistic awards. But he could end up facing the death penalty under the US Espionage Act simply for exposing the actions of the powerful.

War On Dissent: Shrinking Space For Protest In The UK

The Network for Police Monitoring (Netpol) campaigns against police surveillance and the regular smearing of activists and groups as “domestic extremists.” Writing in 2016, Netpol observed that the government and the police in Britain are in a “permanent state of war.” This war is fought on a number of fronts — apart from the never-ending war on terror, there are also wars on drugs, on urban black youth, on migrants and on alleged extremism, particularly but not exclusively targeting Muslim communities. “Every battle,” we argued, “requires an enemy and these wars are no exception.” Not least among those perceived enemies are the political dissenters...

Increased Restrictions On Protest Won’t Keep Communities Safer

On Oct. 15, the Portland Police Bureau held a press conference to announce a new ordinance that would expand police power to limit protest activity. The proposal comes after two years of catastrophic attacks poised as political theater, including mass melees downtown that left people in the hospital, white nationalist contingents taking the streets and an acolyte murdering two people on public transportation when interrupted in the middle of an Islamophobic attack. Every time Patriot Prayer, the Trumpian far-right group who allies with white nationalists, takes to the streets, the entire city revolts. On Aug. 30, Patriot Prayer returned to Portland after a rally a month earlier where attendees brutally assaulted counter-protesters.

America Is On The Brink Of A Nervous Breakdown

Yet another ratcheting up of the calls for the government to clamp down on the citizenry by imposing more costly security measures without any real benefit, more militarized police, more surveillance, more widespread mental health screening of the general population, more threat assessments and behavioral sensing warnings, more gun control measures, more surveillance cameras with facial recognition capabilities, more “See Something, Say Something” programs aimed at turning Americans into snitches and spies, more metal detectors and whole-body imaging devices at so-called soft targets, more roaming squads of militarized police empowered to do more stop-and-frisk searches...

Does Domestic Use Of The Military For Immigration Violate The Posse Comitatus Act?

The US is sending thousands of troops to “harden” the border with Mexico, Pentagon officials said today (Oct.29), as thousands of asylum-seekers approach on foot from Central America. The armed forces will send 5,200 personnel, three helicopters, several military planes, and more than 150 miles of razor wire to border locations, starting in Texas, Air Force Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command and US Northern Command, told reporters Monday (Oct. 29) afternoon, confirming earlier reports. Customs and Border Protection officers will continue to enforce immigration law on the border...

Ferguson Activist Melissa McKinnies’ Son Found Dead From Alleged Lynching

A Ferguson activist claims that her son was recently killed by lynching. Melissa McKinnies took to Facebook to share news of her son Danye Jones‘ death. The 24-year-old, who would’ve turned 25 on November 19, was found dead by his mother on October 17. In a since-deleted Facebook post, McKinnies shared graphic images of Jones hanging from a tree. The images have since been shared on social media. Unverified accounts from social media accounts claim that police have ruled Jones’ death a suicide. (Both hyperlinks include the graphic images of Jones. Viewer discretion is advised.) McKinnies participated in numerous protests in Ferguson following Michael Brown‘s death. She was a former member of Ferguson grassroots activist group Lost Voices according to ColorLines.

Julian Assange Warns That Ecuador Is Moving To End His Political Asylum

Before being abruptly cut off by an Ecuadorian government lawyer during a court hearing on Monday, WikiLeaks founder and publisher Julian Assange accused that government of seeking to end his asylum in its London embassy and hand him over to the United States. Assange spoke from the tiny embassy via teleconference to a hearing in Quito of a lawsuit in which he is challenging a draconian protocol that President Lenín Moreno’s government has sought to impose on him. Assange said the new rules were a sign Ecuador was trying to push him out, and that Moreno had already decided to end his asylum but had not yet officially given the order.

Human Rights World Summit Warns Of Rise In Activist Murders

The conference is aimed at building ties between activists to develop strategies for fighting repression and discrimination over the next two decades. More than 150 rights campaigners from around the world gathered in Paris on Monday, warning of a spike in the number of activists from Brazil to the Philippines being murdered for their work. Groups behind the Human Rights World Summit, including Amnesty International and the International Federation for Human Rights, said at least 312 activists were murdered in 2017. This represents a doubling in the murder rate since 2015, they said in a statement on the first of three days of meetings in Paris, bringing together activists from 105 countries.

Inside The Corruption And Repression Forcing Hondurans To Flee To The US

Nineteen-year-old taxi driver Diego is not interested in politics. But his hometown of El Progreso—a transit hub in central Honduras, where everyone seems to have a friend or relative who has “gone north” to the US—has long been a hotbed of popular resistance. In 1954, workers here launched a 69-day strike that challenged the United Fruit Company and briefly brought the country to a political and economic standstill. In November 2017, it was allegations of fraud in the country’s recent presidential election that drew demonstrators to the streets. On one of those days, Diego dropped a passenger near where anti-government protests were slated to take place.

Proof of Assange Extradition To The U.S.

Oftentimes, government officials will claim there is no extradition order in place for Julian Assange. This includes both U.K. and U.S. officials. The problem is evidence does exist that once Assange steps outside the Embassy doors and is arrested by British police for an untested bail warrant, he will then be sent to the United States where he faces a grand jury indictment. This indictment is sealed and would be opened once he is arrested. He faces either life in prison or the death penalty as many view his publishing as espionage. I intend on showing as much proof as possible that the two governments have no intention of not extraditing this journalist.

7 Arrested In Anti-Drone Protest At Creech AFB

INDIAN SPRINGS — Several peace activists have been arrested in a demonstration at a U.S. Air Force base outside Las Vegas against the use of drones for killing in the war in Afghanistan. Organizers of the effort at Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs say seven anti-drone protesters were arrested on Thursday. They say those arrested were transported to the Clark County jail.

Socialism Under Attack From Scared White House

The Trump White House did one thing right in its shoddy report: Interest in socialism and Marxism around the world is increasing. Since his inauguration, President Donald Trump has been fighting a nonstop battle against enemies both real and imagined—and his latest offensive is a real doozy. “The Opportunity Costs of Socialism,” published on Tuesday by the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors, attempts to smear socialism—worker ownership of production—as a bankrupt ideology. The 72-page paper uses the 200th anniversary of socialist thinker Karl Marx’s birth as a jumping-off point for condemning everyone who doesn’t pray at the altar of the free market. Not even capitalist social democracies like Norway and Sweden are spared from blistering attacks.

Facebook Censorship Of Alternative Media “Just the Beginning,” Says Top Neocon Insider

This October, Facebook and Twitter deleted the accounts of hundreds of users, including many alternative media outlets maintained by American users. Among those wiped out in the coordinated purge were popular sites that scrutinized police brutality and U.S. interventionism, like The Free Thought Project, Anti-Media, and Cop Block, along with the pages of journalists like Rachel Blevins. Facebook claimed that these pages had “broken our rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior.” However, sites like The Free Thought Project were verified by Facebook and widely recognized as legitimate sources of news and opinion. John Vibes, an independent reporter who contributed to Free Thought, accused Facebook of “favoring mainstream sources and silencing alternative voices.”

Assassination As A Criminal Tool By The Powerful Against The Weak And Oppressed

Only recently a spat between Saudi Arabia and Canada made headlines as a result of the Saudi Government’s beheading of a Myanmar guest worker. After the public barbaric and gruesome decapitation, the corpse was crucified on a horizontal post with the truncated head slung in a bag adjacent to the victim’s mutilated corpse. This is the 21st century, and these are Donald Trump’s BFFs. I suppose that investing $110 billion in lethal weapons, the purchase of Trump apartments, and real estate deals by Saudis flush with cash exonerates Saudi Arabia’s cold blooded murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the thousands of Saudis and Yemeni dead.
