El Salvador: Declaration By Popular Movements On Bicentennial

Salvadorans marched through the streets of the capital by the thousands on Wednesday, in the largest anti-government protest since Nayib Bukele took office.  On the Bicentennial of Central America’s independence from Spain, social movements and organizations from across the political spectrum protested in rejection of Bukele’s authoritarianism, militarization, political persecution, the removal of judges, pacts with gangs, and the Bitcoin law, amid mounting discontent. The Coordinadora Salvadoreña de Movimientos Populares is a coordination initiative of more than 100 organizations and networks of organizations that struggle against the advancement of neoliberalism and authoritarianism in El Salvador and was one of the main groupings of social movements and organizations that mobilized today.

Protest. Petition. Call your senators. Nothing changes, right? No matter how large our demonstrations get, no matter how many millions of people write and petition politicians, no matter how many people get arrested in front of the White House or at our state capitols, it seems that our (supposedly) elected officials keep turning a blind eye and deaf ear to our cries for change. In fact, there’s even a study out that shows that in 20 years on 2,000 different bills, we, the People, got our bills through Congress a whopping 0.0 percent of the time. (Yes, you read that correctly. Zero point zero. In other words, “never-ever-not-once”.) Only businesses and rich people managed to get legislation passed. And sure, it looked like we had a few victories, so long as one of those other groups were aligned with us.

As we reflect on what has transpired in Afghanistan with the Taliban returning to power, we have a vital opportunity for a more authentic, coherent humanitarian response. Toward this end, we must engage some critical analysis and questions.   We might ask why the Afghanistan government didn’t adequately have the support of its people? How can the conditions and momentum be generated for such trust, consideration and inclusion? Why has this been an ongoing issue long before the drawdown of U.S. troops?  President Biden has done a very courageous act by significantly reducing the role of the U.S. military and committing to military withdrawal in a large-scale international conflict, even after 20 years of U.S. military efforts in Afghanistan.

ALBA Movements Issue Alert Over Coup Attempt In Peru

ALBA Movimientos is issuing an alert of a coup underway against the government of Pedro Castillo in Peru and is calling for international solidarity, saying, the removal of Héctor Bejar from the Foreign Ministry, just two weeks into government, “is a clear sign of the coup in progress in its political & military facet and expresses the linkage of right-wing parties with fascist sectors of the human rights violations [of past decades]”.

The global pandemic has killed millions of people, with race, poverty and gender being leading determinants of mortality. The global income gap continues to grow as a tiny sector of financiers and industry titans amass unprecedented wealth off the backs of workers. A single individual, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, controls upwards of $200 billion and the US billionaire class has collectively gained over $1.8 trillion during the pandemic, minting several new billionaires — many from the pharmaceutical industry. Wall Street, through a series of speculations, has ballooned the wealth of a few tech and logistics firms, while “essential workers” in those industries work with heightened risk of exposure to the virus and die apace.

President Arce attended the inauguration of Pedro Castillo and held a meeting with the new Head of State afterwards. Coming out of the meeting Arce stated, “In a meeting with our brother President Pedro Castillo, we have decided to reinstate the Binational Cabinet between Bolivia and #Peru, together with the social movements of both countries, as soon as possible. This time we will be the hosts.” “There are many issues that we must address, such as energy, trade and the inter-oceanic train. The new Binational Cabinet will mark the beginning of a cycle of mutually beneficial meetings between the two peoples. Long live the Patria Grande!” President Arce added. It’s difficult to reflect on the history of radical social movements without the curse of nostalgia.  Partly this is because time mitigates bygone frustrations, leaving us with exaggerated memories of idealism and youthful energy.  But partly it’s also because radical social movements in the USA all seem to follow the same negative trajectory.  (It doesn’t help that the climate apocalypse is palpable with no possibility of relief in sight.) Those movements begin with vim and grand ambitions, with visions of salvation and victory, with contempt for orthodoxy and structures of power.  If effective, they force some kind of confrontation, at which point the state mobilizes incomprehensibly vast resources to contain the threat. 

Guatemala Protests Call For Resignation Of President And Corrupt AG

Protests and road blockades are being held on roads and highways across Guatemala to demand the resignation of neoliberal President Alejandro Giammattei and his Attorney General, Consuelo Porras following the dismissal of the head of the Special Prosecutor Against Corruption, Juan Francisco Sandoval, now in exile. A large number of opposition movements and parties, including indigenous, campesino and student organizations have organized at more than 60 meeting points in the capital and across the country, in what some are calling a ‘Plurinational strike’. Indigenous authorities issued a call on Thursday, urging the population to support mobilizations by taking to the streets to show rejection of the government and its corruption and flagrant mismanagement of the state.

On July 26, President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his sixth and final State of the Nation Address (SONA) before the 2022 general election. The SONA is an annual government tradition and constitutional obligation, modeled after the American State of the Union address. It is a theatrical stage for the President of the Philippines to boast about the previous year’s so-called achievements, and preview next year’s legislative plans and executive orders, not unlike the American president’s annual State of the Union address. Outside of Malacañang Palace, the seat of the Philippine president’s power in Manila, opposition groups, peasant workers, and unions held another annual tradition during Duterte’s speech: The People’s State of the Nation Address.

At a time when voting rights are under assault, it is important to remember the legacy of Bob Moses, a brilliant community organizer who died on Saturday at age 86. Moses was a key architect of the movement to enlist Southern Black workers and sharecroppers to register to vote, a campaign that eventually pressured Congress to pass the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a momentous victory which the Republican Party has steadily sought to erode.

The first time I saw protesters dancing on the roof of a police van was at a May Day demonstration in London in 2002. Over the dulcet acid techno beats of a bike-powered sound system, a friend explained that we were imitating the Reclaim the Streets movement of the 1990s—free parties on highways doubled as tactics of resistance against infrastructure projects in the name of halting ecological and capitalist crisis. I learned then that I had come too late for anything new. The late British cultural theorist Mark Fisher described this era as one of nostalgia (-algia, the suffix, signifies pain, distress). Thanks to the ideology of what Fisher called “capitalist realism,” faith in the future had been canceled.

In Portugal, workers and students on Thursday gathered in front of the Cuban embassy in Lisbon to demand an end to the U.S. financial and trade blockade. "How could a Revolution that has given so much to the peoples of the world be alone? How could those who have made solidarity, friendship, and cooperation the norm of their foreign policy be alone," asked Gustavo Carneiro, a member of the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC).

Haitian Movements Caution Against Foreign Intervention

In the early hours of July 7, unidentified armed men attacked the house of Haiti’s de-facto president Jovenel Moïse and shot him dead. In the attack, his wife was also severely injured and according to reports she has been hospitalized in Miami, Florida. Haiti’s interim prime minister, now acting president, Claude Joseph, confirmed the news in the early morning and declared a 14-day state of siege. Joseph assured that the “security situation of the country is under control” and called on the citizens to remain calm. In the evening, the secretary of State Communication, Frantz Exantus, reported that two suspects in president’s assassination had been arrested by the national police in the afternoon in Pelerin.

Anti-Imperialists Convene In Venezuela For Carabobo Bicentennial Congress

Venezuela has launched a bold call for unity among the left at the International Bicentennial Congress of the Peoples of the World, taking place this week in Caracas, June 21st to 24th. Conceived by worker-president Nicolás Maduro Moros, the Congress is a socialist and a worldwide initiative. It proposes the Anti-Imperialist Platform of the Working Class. The Bicentennial celebrates the victory of Simon Bolivar’s armies over the royal troops of Madrid in the territory that became Venezuela. Over 120 countries are represented at the Congress by some 350 delegates from across the world, and equal numbers of Venezuelan delegates, among them many organizers in the Afro Venezuelan movement and from Indigenous communities. The crafting of long-term strategies for solidarity has been entrusted to over 3,600 communes organized within the Popular Councils of People’s Power.
