How Trump’S 21st Century Version Of Fiscal Forestry Will Harm VA Care

In his brilliant book, Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed, James C. Scott, warned of projects “driven by utopian plans and authoritarian disregard for the values, desires, and objections of their subjects.” Although the Yale Professor of Political Science and Anthropology, who died last year, wrote Seeing Like a State in 1998, his message is more important than ever as Donald Trump and his allies try to destroy and privatize the VA healthcare system and other government services. Like the other authoritarian schemers that Scott analyzes, Trump, Elon Musk and their faithful servant, VA Secretary Doug Collins view the world through a narrow lens that ignores the “far more complex and unwieldly reality” in which human beings live their lives and, in the case of the VA, experience health and illness.

Will Trump’s Tariffs Trigger A Second Great Depression?

That the Trump administration’s trade war will trigger a steep economic downturn in the U.S. is almost a foregone conclusion a week after the president announced sweeping new tariffs on imports. Last week, JP Morgan, the nation’s largest bank, estimated that there is a 60 percent chance of an imminent recession. That was followed by an announcement from Goldman Sachs, America’s second-largest investment bank, that its economists had raised the odds of a recession to 45 percent, representing the second time in a week that it has increased its forecast.

Judge Says Trump Can Deport Mahmoud Khalil Over His Political Beliefs

The Trump administration’s push to deport Palestine activist and former Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil is based on an accusation of “antisemitism,” according to a source who saw the government’s filing. Facing a court deadline to hand over evidence justifying Khalil’s, the Department of Homeland Security submitted a two-page memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio citing the Trump administration’s authority to expel noncitizens that have the potential to damage the foreign policy interests of the United States.

Iran To Propose ‘Interim Nuclear Deal’ In Talks With United States

Iran is looking to propose an “interim nuclear agreement” in upcoming talks with the US in Oman before reaching a final comprehensive deal on its atomic energy program, according to sources cited by Axios on 11 April. “The Iranians think reaching a complex and highly technical nuclear deal in two months is unrealistic and they want to get more time on the clock to avoid an escalation,” the sources said. Axios had reported last month that US President Donald Trump’s letter to the Iranian leadership – which gave the ultimatum of either talks or a bombing campaign against Iran – included the imposition of a two-month deadline.

This Is An All-Out War On The First Amendment

There are reasons that the FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, is an opaque entity for many people. The fact that there is a federal agency setting the terms for media companies’ operations conflicts with many Americans’ understanding of the press corps as a group of brave, independent individuals looking to tell the truth, and let the chips fall where they may. There are, in fact, many community-supported, differently structured news outlets doing just that. But, listeners know, the big major papers and stations and channels we may look to for news are owned and sponsored by big profit-driven corporations that share the status quo–supporting interests of other big profit-driven corporations.

Chris Hedges Report: The Economics Of A Dying Empire

“These are levels of craziness that are part of the decline I suspect of all empires when they consume themselves,” Professor Richard Wolff says of America’s current situation in the outset of Donald Trump’s second term. He joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the history and rationale behind the decisions made by Trump and how it relates to the decline of the US empire. From tariffs to deregulation, Wolff says it is all erratic, uncoordinated and unpredictable, which are tangible signs of America’s decay. “You cannot tell people what a tariff will do.

Pentagon Head Makes Military Threats In Visit To Panama

On Tuesday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth visited Panama to attend the Central American Security Conference, an initiative of the U.S. military’s Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). SOUTHCOM is one of the 11 unified combatant commands in the U.S. Department of Defense, responsible for contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation in Central and South America and the Caribbean. During the conference, Hegseth announced a series of joint military operations with the Panamanian military, scheduled to take place from April 8 to 10.

Trump Terror, Complicit Local Leadership: The Assault Against Southeast D.C.

On March 27, 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing the “Safe and Beautiful” federal task force for Washington, DC. Framed as a public safety and beautification campaign, the initiative is led by his Homeland Security Advisor, Stephen Miller—a figure known for his hardline white nationalist policies. Under the guise of civic improvement, this task force seeks to further entrench surveillance, policing, and state control over DC’s most marginalized communities, particularly Black working-class residents in the Southeast neighborhood.

Trump Administration Revokes Hundreds Of Student Visas

The Trump administration has reportedly revoked hundreds of student visas, amid a widening crackdown on the U.S. Palestine movement. In recent days, dozens of schools have announced that draconian measures by the Trump administration have targeted some of their students. The list includes UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, Ohio State, Minnesota State University, the University of Kentucky, Northeastern, and Harvard. Last month Secretary of State Marco Rubio guessed that he had revoked about 300 visas since arriving in office. “I don’t know actually if it’s primarily student visas,” Rubio told reporters.

33 Countries Meet In Honduras At The Annual CELAC Summit

Honduras expects to receive 33 representatives at the upcoming annual meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), a regional organization founded on December 3, 2011, in Caracas, Venezuela. Since 2013, member countries have held annual summits in various locations, except for 2022. According to the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, the meeting, to be held on Wednesday, April 9, signifies “a step towards the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean, facing global challenges such as climate change, drug trafficking, and migration.” CELAC was created to foster regional unity in the face of the most pressing geopolitical challenges, as well as create an alternative to the US-dominated Organization of American States (OAS).

Shuttering Of Department Of Homeland Security Oversight Arm Freezes Cases

On Feb. 10, more than a dozen Department of Homeland Security officials joined a video conference to discuss an obscure, sparsely funded program overseen by its Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. The office, charged with investigating when the national security agency is accused of violating the rights of both immigrants and U.S. citizens, had found itself in the crosshairs of Elon Musk’s secretive Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. It began as a typical briefing, with Homeland Security officials explaining to DOGE a program many describe as a win-win.

Response To Trump’s Order To Restore ‘Truth’ To American History

I have now read almost a dozen of President Trump’s executive orders issued since January. It has been an experience I will remember. They all begin with the same statement, “By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered…” So, I feel I have a right to respond similarly: By the authority vested in me as a citizen of the United States, protected by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, I hereby respond to the Executive Order of March 27, 2025 on Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.

Labor Demands An End To The Assault On The Right To Organize

The labor movement holds one value above all others: solidarity. Labor demands an end to the Trump administration’s assaults on immigrant workers, freedom of speech, the right to organize and bargain, and federal government workers, their unions, and the services they provide. We will not stand by as President Donald Trump terrorizes immigrant workers with abduction, detention, and confinement without due process in unmarked facilities, far-flung detention centers, and a notorious prison in El Salvador. The attacks are ramping up, and we need to act fast.

Why Oligarchs Want A Recession

A recession is looming. Trump himself recently affirmed that his economic plans would induce a recession in the near term. He remarked when asked as much by an interviewer, “There is a period of transition because what we’re doing is very big.” And yet, before Trump crashed the stock market last week with his global tariff regime, America’s CEOs had the highest confidence in the U.S. economy that they’ve had in three years, according to a nationwide survey in the early weeks of the Trump administration. And Trump has simply been carrying out the promises he’s long made.

Nicaragua’s Opposition Media Welcome Trump’s New Tariffs

Five countries in Central America, together with the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean, have a free trade agreement with Washington, but this didn’t protect them from the punitive tariffs announced on President Trump’s “Liberation Day.” A minimum 10 per cent tariff on exports to the US will hit low-income countries throughout the region. But exports from Nicaragua have been saddled with an even higher tariff of 18 per cent. Delighted opponents of Nicaragua’s Sandinista government have blamed it, rather than Trump, for the country receiving this additional penalty. However, simple examination of the figures shows that Nicaragua’s tariff was calculated in the same way as every other country’s.
