Racism In Britain Has A Long If Contested History

The demobilized troopship HMT Empire Windrush that arrived at Tilbury Dock on 22 June 1948 was not Britain’s first migration ship, but its passengers were the first to be promised British citizenship, which the British Nationality Act of 1948 conferred on “every person born within the United Kingdom and Colonies.” Of the 1029 passengers, 802 from the Caribbean, 96 were household domestics and 85 were mechanics; there were also, in smaller numbers, scholars, civil servants and a judge. They had accepted an invitation to help rebuild the Mother Country and arrived full of hope for a warm reception.

On 30 October, 520 MPs, councillors, peers, mayors and members of devolved assemblies, wrote to chancellor Rishi Sunak. They emphasised how current government support is leaving many families in poverty. In the letter, organised by UBI Lab Network, the elected representatives said: Millions of people have fallen through the cracks of the government’s support packages. The pandemic has left countless families facing poverty and extreme hardship. They added: With unemployment set to increase amid a shrinking job market, we urge you not to underestimate the wider costs to society of rising poverty and joblessness.

United Kingdom - There are thousands of community-powered initiatives in action across the UK. Projects to bring broadband to a rural place that wasn’t expecting it to arrive for years, generate renewable energy, or make the most of treasured local spaces or assets. Schemes to deliver addiction services, protect neighborhoods from natural disasters, or manage social housing in an equitable way. In none of these have the communities in question needed supervision from the state or transactions with big businesses. 

DIY Chains And Garden Centres ‘Adding To Climate Crisis’ By Selling Peat

United Kingdom - Garden centres and DIY stores are way off track on meeting a government target to end peat use by amateur gardeners, figures show. Green experts said the rate at which peat is still being dug up means the UK’s gardens are helping to accelerate the climate crisis. Stores including B&Q and Wickes, as well as numerous websites, all sell peat products.   Between 2015 and 2019, the amount of peat contained in composts sold to shoppers showed only a small drop, from almost 53 per cent to 41.5 per cent.   Friends of the Earth called on ministers to act, after the government announced a decade ago the voluntary phase-out of peat use by 2020.  

UK Universities Reject Israel Lobby’s Anti-Semitism Definition

Only a minority of UK universities have adopted the misleading and politically motivated definition of anti-Semitism promoted by Israel and its lobby. Despite repeated British government threats, fewer than 22 percent of higher education establishments have adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s “working definition” of anti-Semitism. The IHRA definition has been repeatedly condemned by free speech defenders, Palestinians, Jewish activists, Palestine solidarity, Black and Asian groups.

UK Court Rules Favorably For Returning Venezuela’s Gold

London - A tug-of-war over $1 billion worth of Venezuelan gold stored at the Bank of England took a new turn on Monday as the English Court of Appeal overturned an earlier High Court ruling on who the UK recognised as Venezuela’s president. The Court of Appeal granted the Nicolas Maduro-backed Banco Central de Venezuela’s (BCV) appeal and set aside July’s High Court judgement, which had found that Britain’s recognition of opposition leader Juan Guaidó as “constitutional interim president of Venezuela” was conclusive.

Dr Nigel Blackwood, a Reader in forensic psychiatry at King’s College London (KCL), told the extradition hearing in London last week that Julian Assange was suffering only “moderate” depression.  Giving evidence as an expert witness for the US prosecution, Dr Blackwood rebutted other experts’ findings on the seriousness of Assange’s condition, adding his suicide risk was “manageable”. He told the court: “Mr Assange has proved himself to be a very resilient and very resourceful man and he has underplayed that”.

Labour has sacked three junior shadow ministers who joined with Jeremy Corbyn and 14 other Socialist Campaign group MPs in breaking the party’s whip by voting against the second reading of a controversial armed forces bill. Sources close to the party’s leadership said that the three MPs were warned in advance that they could not remain in their posts as parliamentary private secretaries if they voted against the bill. Nadia Whittome, Beth Winter and Olivia Blake defied the whip, which called on Labour MPs to abstain on the overseas operations bill. The legislation aims to introduce a presumption against prosecution for British soldiers serving abroad.

Anti-Racism Protests In UK As Police Officers Face Court In US

Anti-racism demonstrations took place across the UK on 11 September as the four officers charged over the killing of George Floyd in the US went on trial. Protesters said they are determined to show that previous Black Lives Matter demonstrations were not “just a moment”. Mass protests were staged across the world after footage emerged of officers kneeling on the neck of Floyd, a Black man, killing him. The four men are charged over the death, but it’s understood they will push for separate trials in order to diminish their roles in the incident.

British Soldier Arrested For Opposing UK Arming Saudi Arabia

A British soldier has been arrested for opposing the United Kingdom’s role in the Saudi-led war against Yemen. Video shows Lance Corporal Ahmed Al-Babati of the Royal Signals being led away by military police from his protest outside Britain’s Ministry of Defense in London. Al-Babati earlier released a video explaining his decision to risk his freedom rather than participate in what he feels is a grossly immoral war. “Our government continues to arm and support Saudi Arabia,” he said. “We tried to make our voices heard by protesting in London, Manchester, Liverpool and many other cities.

How Co-operative Architecture Shaped Britain

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Britain's growing co-operative movement provided an alternative to capitalist business practices – and made its mark on cities and towns with ambitious building projects. Co-operative forms of organization have proliferated in the UK during the pandemic, with self-organizing networks of mutual aid groups forming and thriving at street and neighborhood level to meet people’s needs in a collective way. These kinds of relationships feel novel, but co-operative organization has a long history in Britain. Throughout much of the last 170 or so years, the co-operative consumer movement has comprised a vast national system of mutual enterprise, giving rise to the Co-operative Wholesale Society (now known as the Co-op) which has been a stalwart institution on the Left.

UK Students Fighting For Universities To Cut Ties With Israeli Apartheid

Apartheid Off Campus is a newly-formed student network fighting to sever the ties between UK universities and the Israeli occupation. “University students are in a powerful position to campaign in support of Palestinians and against the structures of racism by both challenging/exposing these links and forcing their universities to divest from complicit companies, as well as making their institutions commit to being APARTHEID FREE,” reads the group’s website. Research recently released by the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign shows that UK universities continue to invest over $580 million in companies complicit in Israeli apartheid. Mondoweiss spoke with five of the network’s student activists about the state of BDS in the United Kingdom, the current political climate, and organizing in the time of COVID-19.

Jeremy Corbyn, the former left-wing leader of Britain’s Labour party, is once again making headlines over an “antisemitism problem” he supposedly oversaw during his five years at the head of the party. This time, however, the assault on his reputation is being led not by the usual suspects – pro-Israel lobbyists and a billionaire-owned media – but by Keir Starmer, the man who succeeded him.  Since becoming Labour leader in April, Starmer has helped to bolster the evidence-free narrative of a party plagued by antisemitism under Corbyn.

Venezuela Wins Right To Appeal Ruling Barring Access To Gold Reserves

The Venezuelan Central Bank (BCV) has won the right to appeal a British court decision denying it custody over 31 tons of the nation’s gold held by the Bank of England (BoE). On July 2, the United Kingdom’s High Court “unequivocally recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as president,” following the UK Foreign Office position and rejecting the Maduro government’s right to repatriate the gold belonging to the BCV. Since late 2018, the BoE has refused to return the gold deposited in its vaults, which is valued at an estimated US $1.2 billion. Lawyers for the BCV announced on Friday that they had secured the appeal, which they hailed as an important step forward in the case. “It is incredibly rare for a trial judge to give leave to appeal against their own judgment, and we are pleased to have been granted a limited appeal.”

Well we fight against the United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States, and to a certain extent Australia. They have marshaled all of their forces and broken every law in human rights and due process in order to send Julian to the United States and destroy him. Before our eyes, we have watched the gradual murder of Julian through psychological torture, through ceaseless breaking of procedures and due process. So that is what we fight against. During the latest hearing, the judge Barrett asked Julian to prove that he was unwell, that he didn’t come onto the video. So again, we see a process that we witness over and over again, blaming the victim.
