Global Appeal For Peace; People Of The World Unite

This is a new initiative to create a worldwide network of people and organizations that will work together to oppose the lawless actions of the United States: interference in the politics of other countries through open and covert regime change, the imposition of unilateral coercive economic measures (aka sanctions) that are contributing to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, and threats of aggression or outright military attacks. All of the above violate the founding charter of the United Nations, yet neither the United Nations nor its International Court of Justice have been effective in holding the United States accountable for its actions. No one country or one movement has the power alone to hold the United States accountable, but together we can make a difference.

The US War Machine must be stopped, and only we can stop it. That's why we are organizing the People's Mobilization to Stop the US War Machine, a series of actions in New York City from September 20 to 23 while the United Nations General Assembly meets. At a time when all of the world leaders gather, we will say we've had enough of the US War Machine. We demand the US be held accountable for its destructive acts. It's time for the US government to obey the United Nations Charter by stopping regime change operations, ending the use of unilateral coercive measures (aka sanctions) and ceasing military attacks. We demand the US sign the nuclear weapons ban treaty, rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement, disband NATO and close bases and outposts around the world. We demand an immediate transition to a peace economy that uses our resources to meet human needs and protect the planet.

Environmental Damage Is A War Crime, Scientists Say

Two dozen prominent scientists from around the world have asked the UN to make environmental damage in conflict zones a war crime. The scientists published their open letter in the journal Nature. The letter, titled "Stop Military Conflicts from Trashing the Environment," asks the United Nations' International Law Commission to adopt a Fifth Geneva Convention when it meets later this month. The UN group is scheduled to hold a meeting with the aim of building on the 28 principles it has already drafted to protect the environment and lands sacred to indigenous people, according to The Guardian.

We are deeply alarmed by the imposition of the death penalty on 30 people by the Specialised First Instance Criminal Court of the de facto authorities in Sana’a. The 30 men – most of whom are academics, students and politicians affiliated with the Islah party that has been critical of the Houthis – were sentenced to death on Tuesday. The UN Human Rights Office has received credible information suggesting that many of those convicted were subjected to arbitrary or unlawful detention, as well as torture and other ill-treatment in custody.

When United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet traveled to Venezuela earlier this year, she met with an array of citizens who lost family members to right-wing violence in the country. Among them was Inés Esparragoza, whose 20-year-old son, Orlando Figuera, was doused with gasoline and lit on fire by an opposition mob during violent anti-government riots, known as guarimbas, in May 2017.  “He was stabbed, beaten and cruelly burnt alive,” Esparragoza declared before Bachelet in March. “Simply because of the color of his shirt, the color of his skin, and because he said he was Chavista.”

Caracas, July 6 (IANS) The Venezuelan government has urged the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to intervene against the US trade and financial sanctions which are undermining the South American nation's economy. Addressing a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Venezuelan Vice Foreign Minister William Castillo said on Friday that the sanctions met the body's definition of "unilateral coercive measures" and should be lifted, reports Xinhua news agency. "In keeping with the UN's resolutions on unilateral coercive measures, (we) demand the immediate end to the blockade," urged Castillo.

The world order established by the UN Charter takes precedence over other international and regional treaties and imposes positive and negative obligations on member states, including the United States of America and the European Union. This is stipulated in Article 103 of the Charter, the supremacy clause. The question arises whether in the light of the UN Charter unilateral coercive measures could be considered compatible with modern international law?

The application of unilateral economic sanctions is an explicit violation of international law protected under the United Nation’s (U.N.) and Organization of American States’s (OAS) charters, human rights stipulations, and even national United States (U.S.) law. Despite that truth, they have become U.S. President Donald Trump’s favorite tool to assert his foreign policy goals around the world. Since 2017, the Trump administration has imposed 150 sanctions on individuals and entities in Venezuela via executive orders and by invoking the so-called Kingpin Act.

June 14, Nicaragua was elected member of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC). This honor was probably based on Nicaragua’s development and poverty reduction over the last decade. This council of 54 countries from all regions of the world, created in 1945, is one of the six main organs of the UN and is responsible for two major tasks: Promoting sustainable development and following up on the results of the major UN conferences and summits. 184 of the 193 member nations of the United Nations (190 voters) considered our country a worthy representative of Latin America in that forum.

US Sanctions In Venezuela: Help, Hindrance, Or Violation Of Human Rights?

The impact of the US sanctions on the Venezuelan population cannot be overstated. More than 300 000 Venezuelans are at risk due to a lack of lifesaving medications and treatment. An estimated 80 000 HIV-positive patients have had no antiretroviral therapy since 2017. Access to medication such as insulin has been curtailed because US banks refuse to handle Venezuelan payments for this. Thousands to millions of people have been without access to dialysis, cancer treatment, or therapy for hypertension and diabetes. Particular to children has been the delay of vaccination campaigns or lack of access to antirejection medications after solid organ transplants in Argentina. Children with leukaemia awaiting bone marrow transplants abroad are now dying. Funds for such health-assistance programmes come from the PDVSA state oil company. Those funds are now frozen.

UN Recognizes Venezuela Among Top Nations For Right To Housing

The United Nations has recognized Venezuela as one of the top countries for guaranteeing people’s right to housing at the first UN-Habitat Assembly taking place in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi. Venezuela’s Minister for Habitat and Housing Ildemaro Villarroel announced the statement Tuesday via his Twitter account. UN-Habitat is the U.N.'s highest decision-making body on the subject of sustainable urban development and housing. During the first day's sessions of the assembly, which runs from May 27 until May 31, the Venezuelan government made a presentation on the scope of its social program since it was first conceived.

The UN special rapporteur on torture has issued a stinging rebuke to the United States, Great Britain, Sweden and Ecuador for “deliberately” exposing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to years of “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” which can only be described as “psychological torture.” “In 20 years of work with victims of war, violence and political persecution I have never seen a group of democratic States ganging up to deliberately isolate, demonise and abuse a single individual for such a long time and with so little regard for human dignity and the rule of law,” Nils Melzer said...

Julian Assange has been subjected to drawn-out "psychological torture", a UN rights expert said on Friday, accusing the United States, Britain, Ecuador and Sweden of "collective persecution" of the WikiLeaks founder. The United Nations special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, Nils Melzer, also warned that if London agrees to an extradition request from Washington, Assange risked the death penalty. Melzer visited the Australian whistleblower in a London prison on May 9, nearly a month after his arrest at Ecuador's embassy where he had been holed up for seven years.
