Canada Violently Violates First Nation Sovereignty Over Pipeline

The Wet'suwet'en Nation, which has never ceded its territory, has been working to stop a number of pipelines that Canada wants to build through their territory for the past ten years. This struggle came to a head last week when Canadian police violated their agreement with the Gidumt'en Clan by using violence to remove their blockade and arrest fourteen members. We speak with Jennifer Wickham, who is a member of the Gidumt'en Clan, about what is happening in this pivotal fight to protect the land, water and earth and what can be done to support the Wet'suwet'en People.

Fear, Hate And Violence: The Human Cost Of US Sanctions On Iran

On August 23, 2018 the street price of 1 US$ in Iran was 110,000 Rial. Three months earlier the street price was 30,000 Rial.  In other words, the oranges you paid 30,000 Rials for three months ago may now cost you 110,000 Rials, an increase of 367%. Imagine what would happen in Detroit or Des Moines if the price of a half gallon of milk at Walmart jumped from $1.80 to $6.60 in the space if three months? People living in Iran don’t have to imagine what might happen. They’re living it. They know Trump’s sanctions will hurt. They’ve gone through this before. Under Obama’s sanctions the number of Iranian families living in poverty almost doubled.

Study: Lack Of Media Attention To Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women

According to a new report from the Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI), more than 500 indigenous women and girls have gone missing or have been murdered across 71 American cities with almost no media coverage. The majority of the urban indigenous females ended up as murder victims. On Wednesday, the UIHI released a report identifying 506 cases of missing or murdered indigenous women and girls that went mostly unreported by the media. The report noted that 280 were murder cases, one hundred and twenty-eight were missing persons cases, and 98 had an unknown status.

The War to End War 100 Years On: An Evaluation & Reorientation Of Our Resistance to War

If we consider war as an outcome not of political and economic differences manifesting as military violence but, fundamentally, as an outcome of psychological dysfunctionality preventing intelligent resolution of conflict, then our strategy for ending war can acquire a sophistication it must otherwise lack. Put simply, by understanding the psychological roots of violence we can develop and implement a strategy that intelligently addresses these, both in the short and medium terms. So how do we tackle, strategically, the interrelated set of problems that constitute the institution of war?

Priorities Of The Time: Peace

For as long as anyone can remember violence and conflict have been part of daily life: humanity appears incapable of living peacefully together. There are the brutal cries of war, the vile acts of terror, homicides, rapes and assaults of all kinds. People everywhere long for an end to such conflicts, and are crying out for peace and understanding, to live in a just world free from fear. Creating a world at peace not only demands putting an end to all forms of armed brutality, it also entails building peace within communities, in the workplace, educational institutions and the home, in the natural environment and, most importantly, it requires the inculcation of harmony within all of us. Each of these areas of living are interconnected, the prevailing condition in each affecting the stability and atmosphere of the other.

The Other Side Of School Safety

Jalijah Jones, then a freshman at Kalamazoo Central High School in Michigan, remembers the punch of thousands of volts hitting his slight frame. At 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighing 120 pounds, he was small for his age. He remembers four school security guards officers pushing him up against a hallway wall before a school police officer arrived and Tasered him. He remembers a feeling of intense cold as if his high school hallway had just turned into a walk-in freezer. He remembers falling to the ground, his muscles betraying his mind’s desire to stand.

Lack Of Trust Hinders Reporting Of LGBTQ Crimes

San Francisco - Violent crimes and other hate incidents against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans are consistently not reported and prosecuted because of chronic distrust between the LGBTQ community and police. Nearly 300,000 crimes may have been committed against people across the United States because of their sexual orientation from 2012 to 2016, according to a News21 analysis of data from the federal National Crime Victimization Survey, which tens of thousands of American households fill out each year. “There are people that are hurting right now who don't trust the police and also don't feel comfortable coming forward or speaking up”...

Afghanistan: Civilian Deaths Hit Record High, Says UN

The number of civilians killed in Afghanistan hit a record high in the first half of the year, despite last month's ceasefire, according to the United Nations. In the latest figures released on Sunday by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), 1,692 civilians were killed during the first six months of 2018 - the most recorded in the period over the last decade since the agency began documentation.  However, with a total of 5,122 casualties, including 3,430 injuries, UNAMA recorded a three percent overall decrease in the number of those affected by the violence in the war-torn country. The UN figures also showed a 15 percent drop in child and women casualties - at 1,355 and 544 respectively - but UNAMA voiced grave concern over the human cost of the conflict. "In the first six months of 2018, the armed conflict continued to destroy the lives and livelihoods of civilians at the same toxic levels as last year," the report said.

Where Power Holders Get Power And How Movements Take It Away

This week, we present the second class in the Popular Resistance School course, "How Social Transformation Occurs." The second class takes a more in-depth look at the power holders - what they need to exist and how social movements can weaken their power. We also discuss the characteristics of successful social movements, Grand Strategy, when to negotiate (or not) and violence versus nonviolence. Power holders do not operate in a vacuum, they rely on various factors and pillars to maintain their power.

Statement In Support Of Nicaragua

Commander Daniel Ortega, who has historically raised and defended the flag of the Sandinista Front with his own life, was re-elected in November 2016 by the overwhelming majority of 70% of the electoral vote, in an election of unquestionable democratic character exercise that was monitored by a number of different domestic and international organizations. Since April 18, groups committed to vandalism and violence have been trying to undermine the internal order of the country through blood and fire.

Urgent Action To Protect Human Rights Defenders In Colombia

Human-rights and social-justice organizations in Colombia as well as the international community demand all charges be dropped and the state immediately release Afro-Colombian activists imprisoned on frivolous "terrorism" charges. The ability to move swiftly to defend these two activists, Sara Quiñonez and Tulia Maris Valencia, will impact the Pan-African struggle worldwide.

Banner Hang For Stephon Clark: One Month Anniversary

Sacramento- On the one-month anniversary of Stephon Clark’s murder by Sacramento Police Department, concerned community members hung a 75 foot banner from Sacramento’s Tower Bridge reading “They Want Peaceful Protests- We Want the D.A. To Prosecute.” The protesters are calling for the District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert to secure justice for the Clark family and the black citizens of Sacramento. Historically, police officers involved in the murder of unarmed black men in the United States have not been prosecuted for their crimes.

The Cult Of Violence Always Kills The Left

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The Weather Underground, a clandestine revolutionary organization that advocated violence, was seen by my father and other clergy members who were involved in Vietnam anti-war protests as one of the most self-destructive forces on the left. These members of the clergy, many of whom, including my father, were World War II veterans, had often became ministers because of their experiences in the war. They understood the poison of violence. One of the most prominent leaders of Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam (CALCAV), to which my father belonged, was the Catholic priest Philip Berrigan, who as an Army second lieutenant fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Stephan House, Draylen Mason, Stephon Clark: Terror Victims

The word terrorism is both over used and useless. It generally refers to the actions of the American government’s political enemies. It is rarely used to describe the wanton killing that is committed by this state or accepted by the dictates of white supremacy. Two black men, Stephan House and Draylen Mason, were killed by a white man in Austin, Texas. The perpetrator is dead too, killing himself with the same explosives he used against House and Mason. The bomber should have been called a terrorist but law enforcement never used the word.

Israel’s Systematic Violence Against Palestinian Women

Crucial to Israeli colonialism is an attempt at the destruction of Palestinian society. This is part of a bid to secure demographic majority over non-Jewish people across all of historic Palestine and maximal control over the territory and its resources. Pursuing these goals necessarily involves hindering Palestinians’ ability to raise their next generation and to sustain, educate and care for themselves and each other. The institutionalized destruction of Palestinian women’s lives has thus been an essential feature of the Israeli project. And as the world celebrates International Women’s Day, and in a time of the #MeToo movement, it is important to remember how Israel has systematically carried out violence against Palestinian women, undercut their healthcare, and undermined their socio-economic conditions. In this regard, Israeli settler-colonialism can be seen as intrinsically anti-feminist and a form of gendered violence.
