It’s Time To Shorten The American Work Week

Americans are one of the most overworked populations in the world. With the average worker clocking 47 hours a week, Americans work more hours per year than almost any other industrialized country — 423 more than German workers, 248 more than workers in the United Kingdom, and 266 more hours a year than French workers, according to the latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development statistics.

Brazil Petrobras Workers Call Indefinite Strike From Saturday

The federation and its 13 unions said the decision to layoff workers violates the collective labor agreement signed between union representatives and the firm. Workers at the Brazilian oil company Petrobras approved Wednesday a plan to go on an indefinite strike from Saturday, protesting a plan by the state-controlled company to close the Parana Nitrogen Fertilizer plant and fire its 396 workers.

The Flexibility Of The Worker Co-op Model

Worker co-operatives are businesses that are owned by the employees. Workers pool their skills and resources to create a business in which they are both the owners and the employees. From the outside, worker co-ops look like any other business however on the inside they differ substantially. While profit is absolutely a goal, their bottom lines are measured in more than just financial terms. “It is not enough for a worker co-op to just make a profit.”

CEOs Make More In First Week Of January Than Average Salary – Pay Ratios Are The Solution

The typical FTSE 100 CEO will have earned as much as the average UK worker earns in a year by 5pm on January 6 2020 – £29,559 for 33 hours of work, according to data compiled by the High Pay Centre think tank. By the close of the year, the same CEO would have earned £3.46 million – roughly 117 times the average wage in the UK. This is a staggering differential. If you believe that excessive executive pay is a problem, this statistic illustrates the point perfectly.

Colombians Launch National Cacerolazo Against Tax Reform

Thousands participated in a pot-banging protest in Bogota on Monday afternoon [December 16, 2019] in the Plaza de Bolivar, in order to demand the burying of a tax reform bill in the Congress of the Republic, as it lowers duties on businesses. Colombia's National Strike Committee, comprised of major unions and student organizations, called this Monday for a national 'cacerolazo' (pot-banging protest) in rejection of the tax reform that the government insists on defending, despite the fact that many consider it harmful to millions of citizens. The Colombian Federation of Education Workers (FECODE) pointed out that the aforementioned bill had a detrimental impact on national revenue, mainly because of the reduction of income tax from 32 to 30 percent for legal entities.

The Urgent Need For Worker-Owned Media

Another quality media outlet has been killed, another talented group of writers and editors pushed out of their jobs. Today’s casualty: Deadspin, the acclaimed not-just-sports website, where staff resigned en masse to protest the elimination of their editorial independence. Earlier this year, private equity firm Great Hill Partners acquired Gizmodo Media—which included not only Deadspin, but the Onion, Jezebel, and Lifehacker. Great Hill rebranded the company G/O Media because of course they did, and began to do what rich owners do to successful and high-quality media properties: destroy them.

The metro workers and community members who packed the room began chanting “time’s up” until a security guard announced anyone chanting would be told to leave. Finally, nearly an hour after the meeting’s scheduled start time, the WMATA board members trickled in.

Southern Workers Unite Around Medicare For All

Over The Last Week, At Least 85,000 Workers Were Out On 13 Different Strikes

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 485,000 U.S. workers were involved in strikes and lockouts during 2018. That’s the highest number since 1986. The data for 2019 won’t be released until 2020, but there’s a good chance that number will be exceeded, a point driven home by the fact that, over the last week, at least 85,000 workers participated in 13 different strikes across the United States. The crest of the strike wave has primarily been ridden by school workers. About 26,000 Chicago teachers have now been on strike for 12 days...
