Consortium News Sends Libel Notices To Canadian Signals Intelligence Agency And Major Television Network

Consortium News has sent libel notices to the Communications Security Establishment (CSE), Canada’s version of the U.S. National Security Agency, and to a major Canadian television network, Global News, for a report that said Consortium News was “part of a cyber-influence campaign directed by Russia.” Based on a CSE leak of a secret document, Global News’ website said in a Dec. 10, 2019 article entitled, “‘Canadian eyes only’ intelligence reports say Canadian leaders attacked in cyber campaigns,” that Consortium News led this campaign.

Indigenous Leaders Call On Minister Wilkinson To Reject The Teck Frontier Mine

January 20, 2020, Vancouver, BC, Coast Salish Territories - Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) gathered Indigenous leaders and land defenders outside Minister Wilkinson’s office in North Vancouver to raise alarm about the impacts of the Teck Frontier Mine proposal - the largest proposed open-pit tar sands mine. Members from the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC), Tiny House Warriors, Smith’s Landing First Nation, and Wet’suwet’en Solidarity Network came together to assert inherent Indigenous rights and put the Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change...

Claims That The ‘NAFTA 2’ Agreement Is Better Is A Macabre Joke

Democratic Party House representatives have voted by a wide margin to approve version 2 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Even Rose DeLauro of Connecticut, in the past a strong leader within Congress in the fight against so-called “free trade” agreements, is on board with this one. Representative DeLauro and other congressional Democrats claim they forced the Trump administration to strengthen the agreement by compelling the insertion of language that allegedly creates “effective and meaningful labor standards and protect[s] worker rights”...

Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs Pose Monumental Challenge To $40-Billion LNG Project And The B.C. NDP Government

Tensions continue to run high over the 670-kilometre Coastal GasLink pipeline project, which has been approved by the federal and B.C. governments, as well as by 20 elected First Nations councils along the route. It's become a defining moment not only in the evolution of Indigenous rights, but in the future of B.C.'s NDP government and Canada's oil and gas industry. That's because this pipeline is a key part of a $40-billion capital project that includes the huge LNG Canada plant near Kitimat.

UN Orders Canada To Halt Work On Trans Mountain Pipeline

Blue River BC — A new United Nations report orders Canada to cease construction on the Trans Mountain Pipeline until informed consent is obtained from the Secwepemc people.  “Now it is clear to the whole world every minute that Canada continues construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline is a violation of the basic human rights of Indigenous people.” That was how land and water defender Kanahus Manuel responded to the newly released United Nations report that has denounced Canada’s major resource projects on Indigenous lands saying they could...

Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs Evict Coastal GasLink From Territory

The situation in British Columbia, Canada, where the Indigenous Wet’suwet’en nation is resisting the construction of fractured gas and bitumen pipelines through their unceded territories, is reaching a boiling point as the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs have issued an eviction notice to the Coastal GasLink pipeline company. For some background reading, check out Natalie Knight’s “‘Wet’suwet’en Strong’: Indigenous resistance in Canada” and “Colonial frontlines in the city: urban Indigenous organizing.”

Canadian Police Were Prepared Shoot Indigenous Land Defenders Opposed To Megaproject On Their Territory

In 2018, 164 land defenders were killed while protecting their land and ecosystems from destructive extractivist industries. Nearly one quarter of those killed were Indigenous. Many of those killed were in the Latin American countries where Peace Brigades International accompanies human rights defenders. 24 land defenders were killed in Colombia, 16 in Guatemala, 14 in Mexico, and 4 in Honduras. The Guardian now reports, “Canadian police were prepared to shoot Indigenous land defenders blockading construction of a natural gas pipeline in northern British Columbia…

U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement—Weak Tea, At Best

The revised U.S.—Mexico—Canada Agreement (USMCA), announced today by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and endorsed by the AFL-CIO, represents a significant improvement on the draft agreement first released in 2017. Negotiators for labor and House Democrats strengthened the provisions on labor rights, environmental standards, and the enforcement of these rules, and also removed costly and egregious new protections for corporations, including giveaways by the Trump administration to pharmaceutical companies.

Mining Culture Wars Escalate In Oaxaca

Tourism is on the rise in the picturesque city of Oaxaca, known for its smoky mezcal, activist art scene, and diverse patchwork of Indigenous cultures. This year, visitors to the tiny airport in southern Mexico—where traffic is up 34 percent—were greeted by a billboard depicting smiling miners in a verdant field. “Welcome to Oaxaca,” the sign read, “where progress and nature coexist. Cuzcatlán Mining Company.” Cuzcatlán is the wholly-owned subsidiary of Fortuna Silver Mines, a Vancouver-based company that operates a gold and silver mine an hour south of the airport.

Open Letter Calls On Canada To Stop Supporting A Corrupt Haitian President

In recent months, Haitians have demonstrated their overwhelming opposition to President Jovenel Moïse. There have been massive protests and multiple general strikes demanding Moïse leave. We consider their demands legitimate. A recent corruption investigation by Haiti's Superior Court of Auditors and Administrative Disputes accused Moïse's companies of swindling $2 million of public money. Some $2 billion was pilfered under Moïse's mentor Michel Martelly from Petro Caribe, a discounted oil program set up by Venezuela.

15 Canadian Kids Sue Their Government For Failing To Address Climate Change

Fifteen children and teenagers from across Canada sued their government on Friday for supporting fossil fuels that drive climate change, which they say is jeopardizing their rights as Canadian citizens. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Vancouver, is the latest from young climate advocates around the globe who are increasingly leading public protests and filing legal challenges to make their concerns about their future in a warming world heard. "The federal government is knowingly contributing to the climate crisis by continuing to support and promote fossil fuels and through that they are violating our charter rights," said Sierra Robinson...

The Council Of Canadians Back In The News. Living In The U.S. Empire [Part 2]

Any move (since European settlement) in Canada for Independence has had to be anti-imperialist ….  In relation to U.S. imperial power in Canada the fight has been endless, covert as well as overt, packed with political sell-out, fraught with threat, bribery, and intimidation … and wrapped in such saccharine phrases as “the longest undefended border” etc.  The U.S. wanted Canada from the beginning, conducting two wars for (attempted) conquest … and it covertly watched the 19th Century Fenian Raids (Irish-led incursions into Canada to wound the British Lion) to see if they would develop into acasus belli … an excuse for U.S. troops to enter Canada.

Levy, Garibay: ‘NAFTA 2.0’ Undermines Affordable Prescriptions

If at first your eyes glaze over at mention of the proposed United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA, aka “NAFTA 2.0”), it’s hard to blame you. Texans admire plain dealing and clear rules. Trade treaties like the original North American Free Trade Agreement operate in fine print, legal niceties and obscure power centers that can govern for years before you find out the rules are rigged against you. On the key topic of prescription drugs, the rules really are rigged against you, and if USMCA isn’t revised, it would only make matters worse. Texans know drugs cost too much.

Open Letter In Support Of Canadian Attending Labor Conference In Syria Against Witchhunt

We write to you as fellow trade unionists and comrades dedicated in the struggle for workers’ rights in support of Donald Lafleur and his visit to the GFTU trade union congress in Damascus. Brother Lafleur has been unjustly placed on administrative leave despite the fact that he attended the meeting as a private individual, on his own time and at his own expense. The Union Executive is continuing its deliberations and considering further actions against him.  We demand that he be permitted to resume his full duties!

25 Ways The Canadian Health Care System Is Better Than Obamacare For The 2020 Elections

Costly complexity is baked into Obamacare, and although it has improved access to healthcare for some, tens of millions of Americans still cannot afford basic medical care for their family. No healthcare system is without problems but Canadian-style single-payer — full Medicare for all — is simple, affordable, comprehensive and universal for all basic and emergency medical and hospital services. In the mid-1960s, President Lyndon Johnson enrolled 20 million elderly Americans into Medicare in six months. There were no websites. They did it with index cards!
