Coastal GasLink Ordered To Cease Work On Unist’ot’en Trapline

An inspection by the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) has found Coastal GasLink Pipeline Ltd. (CGL) to be in “non compliance” with three conditions of their environmental assessment certificate. The EAO has requested that CGL “immediately cease activities” within the trapline registered to our Hereditary Chief Knedebeas (Warner William) that may adversely affect the trapline’s use. The BCEAO has found that Coastal GasLink failed to provide the required six months of advance notice for construction activities affecting our trapline, and additionally failed to conduct required site habitat assessments before beginning work.

Two Wet'suwet'en Nation members are accusing Coastal GasLink of attempting to "subvert the authority" of their hereditary chiefs, in their response filing in B.C. Supreme Court Wednesday opposing the company's application for an injunction. The Trans-Canada-owned Coastal GasLink pipeline is part of a a $40 billion project that would move natural gas extracted from northeastern B.C. to the proposed LNG Canada facility in Kitimat where the gas would be liquefied and shipped overseas. Coastal GasLink and its contractors had been unable to get permission to pass the gates at the Unist'ot'en camp on Wet'suwet'en territory.

Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Union workers at a Canadian car seat plant walked off the job Friday to protest General Motors' planned closure of an Ontario manufacturing facility. About 220 workers at the Lear plant in Whitby, Ontario, walked off the job at the start of the day shift. The action by Local 222 of Unifor, Canada's autoworkers' union, is in solidarity with the union's efforts to save the General Motors assembly plant in nearby Oshawa, Ontario.

Canadian Police Block Journalists From Covering Indigenous Pipeline Protest

While arresting indigenous pipeline protesters in northern British Columbia, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recently began prohibiting reporters from covering the demonstrations. In response, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) released a statement demanding that Canadian law enforcement cease restricting access to reporters covering the pipeline protest. On Sunday, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs issued a statement saying all five Wet’suwet’en clans, including the Gidimt’en, oppose the construction of oil and gas pipelines in their territory. “The provincial and federal governments must revoke the permits for this project until the standards of free, prior and informed consent are met,” Phillip said in the news release.

(Written January 8, 2019) Yesterday afternoon, police broke down a wooden gate and arrested several people at the Gidim’ten Checkpoint, a camp on a snowy forest service road along the Morice River southwest of Houston. The Gidim’ten or Gitdumden are one of five clans that make up the Wet’suwet’en Nation. Farther up the road lies the Unis’tot’en Camp, a homestead maintained over the last nine years by members of the Unis’tot’en house group, part of a different Wet’suwet’en clan on adjacent territory. Police have assembled tactical vehicles and earth-moving equipment, but must pass the Gidem’ten checkpoint to reach the Unis’tot’en Camp.

2nd Camp Set Up To Block Pipeline Company’s Access To Wet’suwet’en Land

A second checkpoint has been put up on a remote B.C. forestry road to block construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, days after a court ordered that the first one must stop preventing the company from accessing the road and a bridge. An interim injunction order from a B.C. court last Friday ordered the individuals at the Unist'ot'en camp, a self-described re-occupation of Wet'suwet'en land, to stop impeding Coastal GasLink from gaining access to the logging road and bridge it argues is on a critical path it needs to access as part of pipeline construction. The pipeline is part of an estimated $40 billion natural gas project slated for construction in B.C.
