A New President Elected In Algeria Amid Large-Scale Popular Boycott

On December 12, Algeria held the first presidential elections since the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April after massive protests were held demanding he step down. Following Bouteflika’s resignation the protests continued and the people’s demands were broadened to call for the dismantling of the current political system. Protesters called for a boycott of the December 12 elections as the candidates were alleged to be associated with the previous regime. According to official figures, only 41% Algerians exercised their voting right in the heavily boycotted elections.

General Strike In Finland Saves Their Postal Service

Finland now has the youngest prime minister in the world, 34-year-old Sanna Marin. The Social Democrat was catapulted into power when her predecessor, Antti Rinne, was forced to resign after a postal worker dispute escalated into a nationwide general strike. Rinne’s downfall was shockingly rapid. At the end of August, the government proposed changes to the classification of around 700 workers in the postal service, known as Posti. The proposal was to shift 700 Posti employees working in packaging and e-commerce shipping into a separate collective bargaining unit.

Colombia is undergoing a historic moment of social transformation and struggle. Hundreds of thousands of people have joined the uprising against the criminal, neoliberal and repressive government of president Ivan Duque including famous musicians, beauty queens and athletes. In the universities, plazas, and streets of towns, municipalities and cities across Colombia, people from diverse sectors of society are bringing their pots and pans, placards, home-made shields, musical instruments, etc. to raise their voices against Duque’s government and in support of key demands to improve the lives of the Colombian people.

More than fifty days have passed since the Chilean uprising burst into existence. For those living it on the ground, it feels like much longer. The movement has already gone through several upheavals, alternately evolving and disintegrating in response to the changing terrain of struggle. The Piñera administration and its sympathizers have called — without success — for a return to normality. In response, the people have unequivocally stated that “normality” was the problem. Throughout the capital city of Santiago, graffiti reads: “I prefer the chaos.”

In the hours following the Prime Minister’s presentation of the “final version” of his counter-reform, the workers’ reaction has been unanimous: complete rejection! Nobody is being fooled by the attempts to create division between the generations, between public sector and private sector, between the “general scheme” and “special schemes”. Nobody is being fooled by the so-called concessions either. “Points-based pensions, we don’t want them! Public sector, private sector, on strike, united for withdrawal” – this was shouted by thousands of protestors demonstrating in Lyon this morning, 12 December.

Indeed, as we mark the final Human Rights Day of this decade, we are ending the way we began — in the streets. In Hong Kong, Nicaragua, in Algeria, Sudan, Lebanon, Iran, and elsewhere, people have been on the march, facing bullets, beatings, and prison to demand an end to repressive and unaccountable government, to reject corrupt elites, and secure their rights. Are they naïve? Or do they know something important and powerful?

“Will There Ever Be a #MeToo-Style Movement for Bad Bosses?” New York magazine asked readers in a tone-deaf fog of obliviousness last month. The piece itself was fairly benign, addressing the long-standing and profoundly dubious cult of the genius boss. The trouble was with the headline—which, it must be noted, was almost certainly chosen by a New York editor, not the writer, feminist author Rebecca Traister. Just moments after the piece was blasted out on Twitter, Labor Twitter blasted right back. As the strike of more than 130 Washington metro area bus drivers and mechanics at the multinational conglomerate Transdev reaches its second month, Democratic Party politicians in Virginia are demanding that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) step up efforts to break the strike. In a letter to Metro general manager Paul J. Wiedefeld and Chairman Paul Smedburg, Congressional Democrats Gerald E. Connolly, Donald Beyer, Jr. and Jennifer Wexton, each representing districts served by Metro, called on the transit authority to “create transportation alternatives for riders”...
