Let The War Vote Go To Congress Now

President Donald Trump’s finest hour occurred when he courageously decided to remove our military forces from Syria and to slash them by 50 percent in Afghanistan, provoking the resignation of Secretary of Defense James Mattis shortly thereafter. The withdrawals are consistent with Constitution’s Declare War Clause and Trump’s campaign promise to act as president of the United States, not president of the world. They create an opportunity to bring the nation’s foreign policy across the board into alignment with the constitutional gospel: that only Congress can initiate war.

Love & Rage Against The Machine: Sitting In At The Yale Investments Office

The Sunrise Movement, an organization of young people that made its debut after the 2016 election, helped elect several new pro-climate action members of Congress this year and has been raising hell in D.C. since the election, sitting in (and getting arrested) in Nancy Pelosi’s office and visiting the offices of dozens of other Congressmembers – a thousand-strong – to demand that they support a Select Committee for a Green New Deal that would treat the climate crisis as the emergency it is, and includes a jobs creation piece that would provide employment in the clean energy sector for anyone wanting a job.

Argentine Unions Make X-mas Feast Protest In Front Of Congress

Unions and social movements in Argentina are spending Christmas Eve on the steps of Congress to prepare a holiday dinner for those without a home in protest of government austerity measures that are driving up poverty and joblessness. Members of one of Argentina’s largest unions, the Confederation of Workers for the Popular Economy (CTEP), the Excluded Workers Movement (MTE), The Association of State Workers (ATE), along with several other education and transportation unions are setting up on Monday to feed some 2,000 people on the lawn in front of the national congress located in Buenos Aires. "What we want is to end this year that was filled with a lot of struggle...

Earth To Congress: “All I Want For Christmas Is A Green New Deal”

Washington, DC — Activists from several organizations flashed a light show on the Rayburn House Office Building on Saturday, December 22. The phrase “All I Want for Christmas Is a Green New Deal” was displayed with a high-powered projector in a green hue on the Congressional building for about five minutes. The light show was staged to draw attention to the environmental initiative being championed by Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Democratic Party has yet to adopt or endorse the Green New Deal as part of its platform. U.S. Capitol police responded about 10 minutes later. The activists had already turned off equipment and were preparing to go home.

Green New Deal Has Overwhelming Bipartisan Support, Poll Finds. At Least, For Now.

Eighty-two percent of Americans say they have heard “nothing at all” about the sweeping proposal to generate 100 percent of the nation’s electricity from clean sources within the next 10 years, upgrade the United States’ power grid, invest in energy-efficiency and renewable technology, and provide training for jobs in the new, green economy. But when asked “how much do you support or oppose” the aforementioned suite of policies, 81 percent of registered voters say they either “somewhat support” or “strongly support” the plan, according to new survey results shared exclusively with HuffPost from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and George Mason University.

Every Single Member Of US Congress Approved Crushing Sanctions On Nicaragua

GrayZone Project — Every single member in both chambers of the US Congress approved legislation that will impose sanctions and financial restrictions on Nicaragua in an explicit effort to weaken its government. Known as the NICA Act, the bill is now on its way to the desk of President Donald Trump, who will almost certainly sign it into law. Its passage was spearheaded by neoconservative lawmakers centered around the Miami lobby of right-wing Latin American exiles dedicated to eradicating any iteration of socialism in the Western hemisphere. The United States has spent decades trying to topple Nicaragua’s government, now led by the left-wing Sandinista movement.

Congress Is Starving The Indian Health Service

The Argus Leader published a massive series on Wednesday outlining the failures of the federally-funded Indian Health Service in South Dakota and the toll it’s taken on two tribes, the Rosebud Sioux and Oglala Sioux, also known as the Oglala Lakota. The Leader’s blockbuster report provides everything from first-hand horror stories of Natives losing limbs and loved ones to damning statistics that show the breadth of the systematic failure to provide decent healthcare to the tribes—citing a state report, the newspaper found that the median life expectancy for Native Americans living in South Dakota is a staggering 21 years shorter than the state average.

The Internet Is Rising Up For Net Neutrality

Congress only has until December 10th to use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to reverse the FCC’s resoundingly unpopular repeal of net neutrality. After that, there are other paths to restoring open Internet protections, but this is a crucial moment to make sure lawmakers are feeling the heat and know that people are paying attention to where they stand. With the deadline fast approaching, we’ve launched a major online action at DeadlineForNetNeutrality.com, calling on the whole Internet to sign an open letter to lawmakers. And the Internet is rising up.

November 29: Day Of Action To Save Net Neutrality

Fight for the Future has teamed up with major celebrities and web companies for one last day of action on Thursday, November 29 to convince Congress to overturn the FCC's repeal.  The last day for Congress to overturn the FCC is Dec. 10, so we need to drive as much constituent pressure as possible to make them do the right thing. We need to make the most of this moment and get as many lawmakers as possible signed on to strong net neutrality rules before the end of the year. To help make this happen, we've created a new campaign page for the November 29th day of action called DeadlineForNetNeutrality.com – and it's pretty epic.

Eleven Military-Intelligence Democrats Win US House Seats

With the victory of Jared Golden, an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran, in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, a total of 11 Democrats with military or intelligence backgrounds have won Republican-held seats in the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. The military-intelligence apparatus accounts for the largest number of victorious Democratic challengers in Republican districts, more than lawyers (9), state and local government officials (7), businessmen/wealthy individuals (7), or others (8).

Somali-American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Backs BDS Amid Facing Anti-Semitism Smear Campaign

Longtime supporter of Palestine Ilhan Omar has taken her passion to Congress and backed the BDS movement. The first Somali-American congresswoman Ilhan Omar has backed the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement after a large attempt to smear her as an anti-Semite for her Palestine activism. “Ilhan believes in and supports the BDS movement, and has fought to make sure people’s right to support it isn’t criminalised. She does however, have reservations on the effectiveness of the movement in accomplishing a lasting solution,” her office told Muslim Girl on Sunday. This comes after months of being attacked online for her support for Palestine, with many trying to smear her as an anti-Semite.

Midterm Scoreboard Reveals Massive Pro-Israel Influence On Congressional Candidates

November 07, 2018 "Information Clearing House" -  A just-released Midterm Elections Scoreboard shows that Israel partisans have dominated Congress over the past 10 years, despite the preference of American voters, who consistently wish evenhanded policies and feel the U.S. gives Israel too much money. The detailed scoreboard on candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives* shows that 28 pro-Israel PACs and numerous pro-Israel individuals have given candidates millions of dollars in campaign contributions. There are currently no pro-Palestine PACs (although one of the pro-Israel PACs supports some Palestinian positions). The scoreboard presents 29 bills and resolutions that were introduced on behalf of Israel, some openly drafted by AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Bezos And Bipartisanship: Voting Vets Not Always The Best

Veterans running for office have never had a stronger personal brand or more political backing. To hold onto or win back seats in Congress, both major parties have recruited many candidates whose resume includes past military service. Across the political spectrum, various Super PACs have backed this effort to increase the veteran population on Capitol Hill. And one such group, the With Honor Fund, claims that electing more vets will help restore “public trust” in Congress and reduce “the extreme partisanship that has corroded our national legislature.”

The Rats Revolt

There is no American who has fought with more tenacity, courage and integrity to expose the crimes of corporate power and to thwart the corporate coup d’état that has destroyed our democracy than Ralph Nader. Not one. There is little he has not tried in that effort. He has written investigative exposés on the unsafe practices of the auto industry; published best-sellers such as “Who Runs Congress?”; founded citizen action and consumer groups; testified before countless congressional committees; written a raft of environmental and worker safety bills that were passed in Congress under the now defunct liberal wing of the Democratic Party; and, when he was locked out of the legislative process by corporate Democrats, been a candidate for president.

No Chance Congress Will Vote On USMCA This Year

The free trade deal between Canada, the United States and Mexico that leaders from all three countries agreed to in principle recently is a long way away from becoming law, as the man in charge of the U.S. Senate says there's no chance lawmakers will vote on the pact before next year. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell told Bloomberg in an interview Tuesday that there's no chance the logistics can be worked out to ensure that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada-Agreement — or USMCA — will make it to the floor of either the Senate or House of Representatives before the end of the year, so it can be ratified by lawmakers. The statements come against the backdrop of U.S. midterms next month, elections that could see the Democrats take back one or both arms of the federal government.
