‘Socialism” Conference Features US Gov-funded Regime Change Activists

Socialism is now apparently brought to you by the US State Department. From July 4 to 7, thousands of left-wing activists from across the United States are gathering in Chicago for the 2019 Socialism Conference. At this event, some of the most powerful institutions on the American socialist — but avowedly anti-communist — left have brought together a motley crew of regime-change activists to demonize Official Enemies of Washington. One anti-China panel at the conference features speakers from two different organizations that are both bankrolled by the US government’s soft-power arm the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a group founded out of Ronald Reagan’s CIA in the 1980s to grease the wheels of right-wing regime-change efforts and promote “free markets” across the planet.

98.3% Of Ghana’s Gold Remains In The Hands Of Multinational Corporations

Every year, the vast majority of Ghana’s natural wealth is stolen. The country is among the largest exporters of gold in the world, yet—according to a study by the Bank of Ghana—less than 1.7 percent of global returns from its gold make their way back to the Ghanaian government. This means that the remaining 98.3 percent is managed by outside entities—mainly multinational corporations, who keep the lion’s share of the profits. In other words, of the $5.2 billion of gold produced from 1990 to 2002, the government received only $87.3 million in corporate income taxes and royalty payments.

The Politics Of Pesticides: Monsanto Under Fire

Through a series of mergers, pesticide companies are consolidating, taking over seed companies and pushing genetically-engineered foods. Companies such as Monsanto, now merged with Bayer, and Dow and Dupont, which have merged, are chemical companies with a long history of producing toxic chemicals, including chemical weapons used in warfare. We speak with Mitchel Cohen and Robin Esser, authors of "The fight Against Monsanto’s Roundup: The Politics of Pesticides," who spoke about the corruption and health impacts of pesticides as well as the connections to imperialism and colonialism.

Venezuela: US Imperialism Is Based On Lies And Threats

We are completing what became more than a week-long peace delegation to Venezuela organized by the US Peace Council and the Committee for International Solidarity in Venezuela (COSI). The trip was complicated by American Airlines cancelling all flights in and out of the country, leaving us scrambling for ways to get there and get home. We also arrived in the midst of the attack on Venezuela's electrical system, which caused further complications. Our delegation met with community groups, political parties and members of the government, including a private meeting with President Maduro.

#HandsOffVenezuela March In Washington: No To Economic And Military Warfare

Washington, DC - Denouncing the "strangling" of the Venezuelan economy via sanctions and demanding the Trump administration allow the South American country to determine its own fate, pro-democracy protesters marched through Washington, D.C. on Saturday to demand, "Hands Off Venezuela!" The demonstration came seven weeks after the Trump administration recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president, rebuking President Nicolas Maduro, who won re-election last May. U.S. sanctions on Venezuela's state-owned oil company followed, on top of the $30 million per day earlier U.S. sanctions have cost the country.

New Details Of Failed Assassination Against Maduro

The US network ,CNN, published an investigation in which it again confirms the official version of the attempt to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro.  The revelation comes from an interview with a former Venezuelan soldier who contributed videos and photos of the group training in the "Colombian plains" to execute the failed assassination with drones. In these videos, collected by the CNN correspondent in Colombia, it can be clearly seen how drones are sent again and again as high as possible and then abruptly descending to explode near the floor, exactly as they wanted to do in August of 2018.

Solidarity Isn’t A Slogan, It’s A Process

Imperialism is not a static phenomenon. What we had in the 19th century and into the early 20th century is different from what we have now. At that time, production was mostly inside nations. You had the Ford Motor Company located in the United States in competition with Daimler located in Germany, and most Daimler cars were built in Germany, while most Ford cars were built in the United States. They were competing for resources in third or fourth or fifth countries and for markets and finance, etc. That was a form of inter‐capitalist rivalry, and it pushed countries to use their political, military, and economic power to get an advantage over other countries.

Venezuela: Cyber Attack On Electric Grid Came From U.S.

Caracas, VZ - The constitutional president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, denounced on Friday that the cyber attack against the Venezuelan electric system, which caused a five-day national blackout, was directed from Houston and Chicago, cities in the United States. All services were taken away from the Venezuelan "people, in an attack commanded directly by the United States and by John Bolton," who is the National Security Advisor for the White House, President Nicolas Maduro said during a televised national address in Caracas, held by the Armed Forces and Venezuelan governors.

What A U.S. Peace Delegation Learned In Venezuela

We mentioned last week that to gather the full range of evidence on U.S. efforts to sabotage Venezuela, a delegation of 13 leaders from peace, civil rights and women’s organizations were heading to Venezuela for five days. The trip flying in was difficult because many airlines have refused to fly to Venezuela over perceived “danger”. Now, the trip back has been made more difficult because American Airlines refuses to fly to Venezuela. Yet this delegation found the embattled country lively and safe. While delegation members were stuck on the ground until further notice, they livestreamed yesterday.

How To Decolonise The University

In 2015, students at the University of Cape Town demanded the removal from their campus of a statue of Cecil Rhodes, a racist imperialist businessman and politician. The emergence of the #RhodesMustFall campaign started a more globally organised movement for the decolonisation of universities across the world, including demands to make the social sciences rethink the content and form of teaching and learning. As a part of the movement, we welcomed the recently published book Decolonising the University, a collection of “resources for students and academics to challenge and resist coloniality inside and outside the classroom”...

Social Movements Show Support To The Bolivarian Revolution

Several groups of artists, journalists, intellectuals and social groups from around Latin America have shown their support for Venezuela, its Bolivarian Government, and have rejected any interventionist acts perpetrated by the United States. In Argentina, the group of intellectuals Carta Abierta met in Buenos Aires to state their support to the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, in the face of the U.S. attacks that have promoted a coup in the country through right-wing opposition groups. Through a statement entitled "Our Support for the Government of Nicolas Maduro", the members of the group assured that the attacks suffered by Venezuela are part of the "most brutal exercise of a new act of imperial domination, of decrepit imperial domination."

How Militarization Impedes The Green New Deal

Fighting for a Green New Deal in the United States will require uniting all popular forces against the main barriers to social and ecological progress. The Sunrise Movement, which has brought the Green New Deal to the forefront of conversations about the environment, has identified fossil fuel interests as a main barrier to a green economy. Leaders like Aru Shiney-Ajay have rightly noted that solving climate issues will require “transforming our agriculture, transport, and energy systems,” and “massively investing in communities hit first and worst.” In order to overcome the stranglehold of fossil fuel interests over the political system, we need to understand how the military weapons and fossil fuel industries are intertwined.

Venezuela: What Activists Need To Know About The US-Led Coup

Two things stand out about the US coup in Venezuela. First, it is unusually open. Typically, the US tries to hide its coups. Second, the coup is built on a series of obvious falsehoods, yet the bi-partisans in Washington, with a few exceptions, keep repeating them. First, we will correct the falsehoods so readers are all working from the same facts. Second, we will describe how this coup is being defeated. It will be another major embarrassment for the Trump administration and US foreign policy. It is important to understand Venezuela has become a geopolitical conflict

Syria After The Defeat Of Imperialism

This article and series of videos show realities we do not see in the western media. The US, NATO, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Turkey have been defeated in their brutal attempt to take over Syria. This is what life looks like in the capital city, Damascus, after dealing with terrorist attacks and mortars (supported by the US). Life is returning to normal. We hope the withdrawal from Syria announced by President Trump continues and pressure from neocons like his National Security Adviser John Bolton and other neocons is defeated. Patrick Coburn describes this conflict in the administration, the inaccurate media reporting in the US and the weak position of the US in Syria...

Is Russia Imperialist?

Russia is said to be an imperialist world power, one in conflict with the imperialist superpower, the US. Russia has been characterized in this manner both during the period of the Soviet Union, and after the Soviet Union collapsed and separate states were formed. Russia is also said to be a non-imperial capitalist state, one still struggling to recover from the crisis of the Soviet collapse and the political and economic catastrophe of the Yeltsin years, when it degenerated into a near neo-colonial client looted by the US. We will look at how capitalist Russia today has imperialist features as seen in the role Russian capitalist monopolies play in the world imperialist system, Russian export trade in general, the export of Russian capital, the role played by Russian finance capital, and finally Russian military power.
