Militarism and War

The Movement And The 2020 Elections

The political system in the United States is a plutocracy, one that works for the benefit of the wealthy, not the people. Although we face growing crises on multiple fronts - economic insecurity, a violent and racist state, environmental devastation, never-ending wars and more - neither of the Wall Street-funded political parties are taking action to provide relief. Instead, they are helping the rich to get richer. The wealth divide has gotten so severe that three people have more wealth than the bottom 50% of people in the country. Without the support of the rich, it is nearly impossible to compete in elections.

Report On No Foreign Bases Conference: Confront Global Problems By Ending Imperialism & Militarism

For the first time in the history of humanity, the technical means are at hand to eliminate poverty if resources were not diverted to making war. World hunger could be abolished with only a small diversion from military budgets. The only luxuries that so-called middle-class Americans would have to forego would be the Blue Angels air show and drone-bombing wedding parties in the Middle East. Yet, military spending is expanding, and with it global poverty.

Military-Friendly: Zooming Into The State-Level War Machine

It’s a pretty boring drive. My friends in Sweden always engage their rose-colored paradigms when I talk about driving in the US. They think it’s like Thelma and Louise or that Johnny Depp commercial where he’s driving out in the desert at sunset, burying some jewelry in the midst of a wide expanse of red earth and rock. But, no. This is not a way-out-west badass, cool guyliner kinda drive. It’s a snoozer, tunnel-vision-maker of a drive – with too many cops and not enough Sheetz locations. Come to think of it, I’m pretty surprised that I even noticed the sign. At the same time, I’m rather surprised I’ve never seen it before.

Countdown To Women’s March On The Pentagon

Women’s March on the Pentagon (WMOP) is excited to announce we are ready and rarin’ to go for our long anticipated march and rally at ground-zero for US imperialism. "We envisioned this principled non-partisan march on the bi-partisan war machine at the beginning of this year. Despite obstacles, we are excited that many people have been attracted to this long over-due antiwar march in Washington, DC," said one of the lead organizers, antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan, from her home in California.

Opposition to Trump Military Parade Grows, Cost Now Estimated At $92 Million

A network of 187 organizations has come together to urge a mass protest against the military parade in November called for by President Trump. The military parade is widely opposed. Army Times conducted a poll of its readers; 51,000 responded and 89 percent said, “No, It’s a waste of money and troops are too busy.” A Quinnipiac University poll found 61 percent of voters disapprove of the military parade, while only 26 percent support the idea. The national consensus is there should not be a military parade. The organizations signed on to a letter that calls for the parade to be stopped...

Stop The Pentagon Takeover Of Space

Outer space is being taken over by the worlds military. In particular, the US Space Command’s “Vision for 2020” describes the goal of “Full Spectrum Dominance”: military superiority on land, at sea, in the air, in space and of all information. To achieve this end the Pentagon has launched hundreds of satellites which they use for surveillance; communication; global positioning; missile targeting and guidance; drone operations; and so-called ‘missile defence’ all of which are important components of war fighting. In addition, space-based weapons of various types are now being developed.

US Militarism Mapped

Where wars are present and where wars come from are two different questions. If we look at where money is spent on wars and where weapons for wars are produced and exported, there is little overlap with the map above. Here’s a map showing countries color-coded based on the dollar amount of their weapons exports to other governments from 2008-2015...

Barber Sermon On Militarism Reveals Philosophical & Political Limitations Of The Poor Peoples Campaign

The 70 minute lecture on militarism by the Rev. William Barber, co-chair of the Poor Peoples Campaign earlier this month is no small thing both for who was talking, and for what was said. The best version is 2 hours 20 minutes on Facebook here , but Facebook doesn't allow us to share videos except to other Facebook pages.  We've embedded a somewhat shorter YouTube version that's nearly as good here, and again at the bottom of this article. Both of these produced by Repairers of the Breach, part of PPC's own communications shop.  all of it worth a serious listen, in order to get a sense of who and what the PCC and its world view are abd again, what they’re saying.

‘The Plot to Attack Iran:’ A Tool to Combat Washington’s Middle East Wars

The Plot to Attack Iran gives a readable and well- referenced look at Western — especially US — abuse of Iran. The author and human rights lawyer Dan Kovalik presents a concise overview of US imperial conduct since World War II. The book is a reminder, which we need from time to time, of the outrageous hypocrisy and deceit of the US government and the corporate media. Kovalik also drives home that Washington’s foreign policy operations are not just a threat to other countries, but threaten the basic safety of the US people. The US strove to crush any Iranian attempts to create their own development path for their country, particularly as oil became an important resource. The US has continuously sought to overthrow the government since the 1979 revolution.

Explosions And Crashes: Military Aircraft Are A Threat To US Civilians

On April 3, a third military aircraft crashed in just one 24-hour period. That incident happened when a Marine Corps helicopter attempted to land in Djibouti, and occurred shortly after another Marine Corps helicopter crashed nearby the Naval Air Facility El Centro in California, killing four crewmembers. Then, also in that same 24-hour period, a Marine Corps Harrier jet crashed during its takeoff from the Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport. On April 5, a US Air Force Thunderbird jet crashed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, killing the pilot. This was the third Thunderbird jet crash in just the last two years, and became the fourth crash of a military aircraft in less than 36 hours. This January, the US military even had to apologize to Japan over repeated military accidents in that country.

Portland Protest Against New Military Ship

“Smash the U.S. war machine,” protesters chanted. But they didn't get very close to the boat. Activists from roughly 10 different local organizations gathered this morning to protest the naming of the Navy warship that docked in Portland over the weekend. The Portland Democratic Socialists of America planned the demonstration after learning that the ship would be named USS Portland, with April 21 being declared by Mayor Ted Wheeler as "USS Portland Day." "Wars abroad can seem so abstract," says Olivia Katbi Smith, a spokesperson for the DSA, "but we're a in a unique position, with a fucking warship being named after our city, to let officials know that we stand against foreign war efforts."

America’s Growing Military Footprint Is Sparking An Anti War Resurgence

Trump’s new discretionary budget will shovel 61 percent of the country’s social oxygen into the Pentagon’s fiery furnace. That’s $727 billion worth of schools, libraries, green jobs and infrastructure, housing, hospitals, nutritional support, healthcare, and other social needs that will go unmet. As if NRA-driven gun sales, white supremacist militias, anti-woman violence, armed ICE raids, and mass incarceration weren’t enough, capitalism is now giving us another reminder of its inherent violence in the form of a big new boost to spending on the military and overseas interventions.

Nation Trying To Figure Out Gun Violence To Hold Military Parade Glorifying War

Every time a mass shooting rocks the United States, Americans demand their government do something. Whether it’s confiscating guns, arming teachers, or turning schools into prisons, neither politicians or the public can agree upon a solution to the ongoing violence, but they know their government should act. With last month’s Valentine’s Day shooting in Parkland, Florida, most Americans are consumed with outrage targeted at guns, and conversely, those who want to ban guns. They have largely forgotten about the massive celebration of gun violence — and worse — that their president is planning one in the capital city for later this year. Last week, the budget details of President Trump’s proposed military parade revealed a cost of between $10 million and $30 million.

Trump Gets His Unpopular Military Parade, Countermarch Planned

The Trump administration is moving ahead with the president's plan for a massive military parade to be held in Washington, DC on Veterans Day, November 11. But a chorus of voices strongly oppose the parade from within the establishment, including Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, and military top brass. Antiwar and social justice groups are planning a huge protest rally in the capital to coincide with the parade. Veterans groups have been some of the loudest opponents of the planned military parade.  President Donald Trump got the idea for a gargantuan military parade last July in Paris after attending the annual French military parade celebrating Bastille Day. He ordered the Pentagon to start planning for a military extravaganza, with the aim of outdoing the French event.

‘Modernization’: Media’s Favorite Euphemism For Military Buildup

A variation on this tautology is “overhaul” (New York Times, 8/27/17) or “rebuild” (The Hill, 1/20/18), the idea being that something has fallen into disrepair or broken down and simply needs to be put back together. How vast new expenditures on weapons that can already end civilization can be justified in either financial or moral terms is simply breezed past. A “modern” United States is self-evidently preferable to a pre-modern one, and the United States must be “modern” to “keep pace” with perennial Bad Guys Russia and China.
