Women’s March On The Pentagon: We Refuse To Pay To Protest

The day before Thanksgiving, Cindy Sheehan, co-coordinator of the recent Women’s March on the Pentagon* (WMOP) was presented with a $540 bill for “police escort” by the Arlington County (Virginia) Police Department (ACPD). eginning in July, leadership of WMOP began taking steps to secure permits from the two jurisdictions that the WMOP would take on October 21st (51st anniversary of the March on the Pentagon during the Vietnam War): Arlington County (brief march) and the Pentagon.

Lawyer And His Refugee Clients Have Been Persecuted Since Hiding Edward Snowden

As Rob Tibbo raced to the Hong Kong International Airport one day last November to catch his getaway flight, a nagging fear followed close behind. Tibbo, a Canadian expatriate lawyer and respected officer of the local courts, had been in hiding from the police for a month and still worried he could be arrested at any moment. But his taxi arrived at the airport without incident, and Tibbo was soon in safe hands: Pascal Paradis, a Montreal-based leader of the group Lawyers without Borders, and two Canadian diplomats who shadowed him through security, making sure he safely boarded the Vancouver-bound Air Canada jet.

Cops Sexually Assault At Least 100 Women Every Year And No One Talks About It

When discussing America’s police state, we often talk about “black bodies.” The conversation is peppered with words like “brutality” and “police violence.” But no one talks about another brutal act of violence committed by law enforcement figures. We have known about it for years but have mostly overlooked it. Everyone—including this writer—has the information but rarely report it. According to CNN and one of the most widely-used research databases on police criminality, police in the U.S. received 1260 sexual assault charges in a nine-year period, including 405 rapes, 636 acts of sexual fondling and 219 acts of forcible sodomy. That’s only what we know of. While this sounds detestable, these are just the reported cases that resulted in an officer being charged.

3 Florida Ex-Cops Sentenced In Scheme To Frame Innocent Black People

The former Biscayne Park police officers had pleaded guilty in a department conspiracy to clear property crime cases by any means necessary. Three former Florida police officers were sent to prison this week after pleading guilty to their roles in a departmentwide conspiracy to frame people of color for crimes they did not commit. A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Guillermo Ravelo, a 37-year-old former officer with the Biscayne Park Police Department, to 27 months behind bars, the Miami Herald reported. On Wednesday, former officers Charlie Dayoub, 38, and Raul Fernandez, 62, were sentenced to one year apiece after pleading guilty to making false arrests. Dayoub and Fernandez had cooperated with federal authorities in making a case against former police chief Raimundo Atesiano.

Murderous Chicago Cop Found Guilty: Now An Even Bigger Test

For the first time in this city’s notorious history of violent policing, an on-duty officer finally has been found guilty of the murder. That the killer cop, Jason Van Dyke, was white, and his victim, Laquan McDonald, a troubled black youth, made the victory even more momentous. It was the hardest-fought victory won in this city in recent decades and required the joint efforts of dedicated community organizers, independent journalists, “street heat” by thousands of ordinary Chicagoans, and attorneys working the state’s freedom of information law to pull it off. First domino to fall was the bull-headed Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy, notorious from his hyping of “terrorism” threats during Chicago’s hosting of the 2012 NATO conference.

How Fremont Police Have Quietly Accumulated Expansive Surveillance Tools

The Fremont Police Department has been quietly expanding its surveillance programs, sometimes without the knowledge of the City Council. And although police say the goal is to reduce crime by using their growing arsenal of license plate readers and video cameras to quickly catch “prolific offenders,” they acknowledge the department doesn’t track the number and kind of crimes being solved with their high-tech tools because it would require too much work. That concerns privacy advocates who say all that surveillance needs to be justified with data about its effectiveness. “Law enforcement needs to explain to the public exactly what specific goal they are seeking to achieve with these technologies,” Matt Cagle, a technology attorney with the Northern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said in an interview.

Colorful Clash Of Protestors And Police In Barcelona

Protestors opposing a march by police association JUSAPOL in Barcelona, Spain doused police lines with paint and powder before being violently dispersed. Pro-independence protestors and antifa activists clashed with Catalan police at a rally to oppose a manifestation organized by JUSTAPOL (Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil Union) in support of the operation against last year’s referendum on Catalonian independence.

City Forced To Abolish Civil Asset Forfeiture And Pay Back Victims The Millions It Stole From Them

Philadelphia, PA – The city that has gained a reputation for the egregious civil asset forfeiture practices committed by its police department, will now be forced to dismantle the program altogether, as a result of a lawsuit filed by a family who had their home seized by police after their son was accused of a minor drug crime. Residents who have been harmed by the Philadelphia Police department’s civil asset forfeiture practices could also receive part of $3 million in compensation. Markela and Chris Sourovelis initially filed a lawsuit in 2014 after their son was caught trying to sell $40 in heroin on the street. The parents complied with the judge and took their son to a court-ordered rehabilitation treatment. But when they returned home, they found that police had locked them out of their house.

Now More Than Ever, It Is Imperative That Local Elected Officials Step Up To Defend Our Communities.

For too long, communities across the country have lived with the reality of harmful policing practices and a punitive legal system that relies heavily on criminalization, rather than on crime prevention, restorative practices, and investment. The criminalization of marginalized communities is a cornerstone of our nation’s justice system—from the systemic divestment of social services from communities of color, to “War on Drugs” and “tough on crime” policies of the 1990s, to the proliferation of policing practices targeting minor infractions.[1] This reality is enduring. Indeed, under the Trump administration, communities now find themselves in an era of even more heightened attack.

Who’s Training Our Cops + How To Avoid Exploding Houses & Poisoned Water

Did you know that showering less will save some water – sadly, not millions of gallons that fracking operations use in a day – nor will it keep your water safe from contamination – or your house from exploding. --- Next, the deadly exchange between the U.S. and Israel that pedestals police brutality, racism and oppression. Benjamin Douglas from Jewish Voice for Peace gives us the scoop.

Honduras: Police Attack Anti-Gov’t Protests On Independence Day

Amidst independence day parades in Honduras, national security forces threw tear gas and fired water cannons on anti-government protesters. Honduran Independence Day marches in the Tegucigalpa capital turned violent Saturday, Sept. 15, as riot police threw tear gas containers and sprayed anti-government protesters with water cannons. Demonstrators were out on the streets to protest against the presidency of Juan Orlando Hernandez (JOH), whom they and several organizations accuse of stealing last November’s presidential elections from Salvador Nasralla of the Opposition Alliance coalition. Protesters say the Hernandez administration and other government officials committed fraud in order for the incumbent to take last year's presidential election.

Colin Kaepernick Receives Powerful Letter Of Support From Black Police Union

The blowback was as unhinged as it was utterly predictable. Earlier this week, Nike announced it would be partnering with Colin Kaepernick for a new ad campaign, despite the fact that the former 49ers quarterback has been out of the league since 2016. Within 24 hours, President Drumpf condemned the move as a “terrible message” to the country and the nation’s angriest young white men were setting fire to their own property in protest. Police unions, among the president’s more fervid supporters, proved no exception. The National Fraternal Order of Police has deemed the ad an “insult” to law enforcement, while the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) went so far as to call for a boycott of Nike.

Prison Strike Solidarity In Liberal, Progressive ‘Utopia’

Racists exist everywhere in this country because along with racism, it is comfortably maintained by our culture. The old white couple that I met during a demonstration were the nicest yet most offensive racists I’d ever met. Racism is like an invisible venom here, it penetrates deeper because you didn’t even think it would bite. I was approached by a couple during a noise demo outside of the King County Correctional Facility that had just exited the facility and were curious about why we were outside. They told us that they were missionaries that went in on a regular basis and volunteered to pray...

Spike Lee’s Film Makes Cop That Spied On Blacks Into Hero

This contains spoilers, so read no further if you don’t want the film spoiled. This is not so much an aesthetic critique of the masterful craftwork of this film as it is a political critique of the content of and timing of the film. I also want to say, as I tweeted last week, that Spike Lee has been a huge influence on me. He’s the reason I went to film school so many years ago. He’s the first person I sent a demo tape of my music to when he had 40 Acres and a Mule Musicworks, and he has inspired me as a cultural critic as well. He never held his tongue about what he thought of Tyler Perry films or any other films that he happened to see and be displeased with. Spike doesn’t hold his tongue. Although I’m gonna lay out my disagreement, I hold him in highest respect as a filmmaker.

Vigilantes With A Badge: Warrior Cops Endanger Our Lives And Freedoms

I have known a lot of good cops, I have defended a lot of good cops, and I have been fortunate to call a number of good cops friends. So when I say that warrior cops—hyped up on their own authority and the power of the badge—have not made America any safer or freer, I am not disrespecting any of the fine, decent, lawful police officers who take seriously their oath of office to serve and protect their fellow citizens, uphold the Constitution, and maintain the peace. My beef is with the growing squads of warrior cops who have been given the green light to kill, shoot, taser, abuse and steal from American citizens in the so-called name of law and order. These cops are little more than vigilantes with a badge. Indeed, it is increasingly evident that militarized police armed with weapons of war who are allowed to operate above the law and break the laws with impunity have not made America any safer or freer.
