Jane Fonda Leads Climate Protests At US Capitol For Fifth Week In A Row

Jane Fonda was joined by hundreds of others in Washington D.C. for her fifth “Fire Drill Friday’ to urge the need for climate activism. Leading the charge out from the U.S. Capitol, Fonda urged adults to join in the fight for climate action. “We cannot leave it to young people to fight this fight for their future by themselves,” Fonda said. This is the fifth consecutive week that Fonda has participated in climate change protest in Washington. Although the Academy Award winner pledged to get arrested 14 consecutive Fridays in a row, and did her best to block an entrance to the White House grounds, she evaded arrest this week.

In 1975, Lebanon went through 15 years of violent and destructive civil war. The circumstances before the beginning of the war were aimed at destroying and removing the Palestinian Liberation organisation (PLO) led by Yasser Arafat. Palestinians were drawn into a civil war in Lebanon, paving the way for an Israeli invasion in 1982 that finally led to the departure of the PLO from Lebanon (and the “Islamic Resistance” that became years later known as Hezbollah). Today, in Lebanon, Hezbollah believes the same scenario could be repeated if dragged onto the street to face protestors.

There is no shortage of corruption in Lebanon. According to Transparency International, people in Lebanon are the most likely in the MENA region to describe their politicians and state institutions as highly corrupt. From the smallest bureaucratic transaction to the largest government contract, billions of dollars are drained from people’s pockets through bribery and from the public purse through embezzlement. But the focus on liberal forms of corruption, as defined by Transparency International and other international actors, has reduced the crisis to a problem of bad governance.

BOSTON — The Alliance to Mobilize Our Resistance and allied groups visited the offices of several investors in the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility across the country Monday in an effort to get them to withdraw investments from the quasi-public prison. “We call on all investment firms that serve as bondholders for the Wyatt Detention Center in Rhode Island to divest from this institution and stop profiting off of dehumanization and family separation,” said Arely Diaz, organizing director of AMOR.

Normally a bustling spot for engineering students, white-collar and blue-collar workers alike, Brooklyn New York’s Metrotech Commons became a 1,000+ strong sea of concerned working class warriors on Nov. 1. “Poverty is not a crime,” “No cops in the MTA,” “Make the MTA free” was shouted by the multiracial, intergenerational, and militant crowd. They carried signs that read, “No new police,” “NYPD off our trains, “Don’t let the police touch us.” The cops were out in full force, but “the people were angry and unafraid,” observed Party for Socialism and Liberation member Joel Northam from Brooklyn.

Chilean Activists Sue Piñera Over Crimes Against Humanity During Protests

Chilean NGOs Popular Defense, Vergara Toledo Bros Defense Committee and Legal Cooperative filed Monday a lawsuit for crimes against humanity against President Sebastian Piñera so that Santiago's 7th Guarantee Court investigate his political responsibility for human rights violations which have taken place over the last two weeks amid massive unrest in the country. The Chilean government's human rights violations "are framed in a systematic and widespread attack against civilians who have taken to the streets demanding structural changes to neoliberal policies which the right has strengthened for almost 30 years," the plaintiffs argue.

UK High Court: Ban On Extinction Rebellion Protests Illegal

The High Court today ruled that the Metropolitan Police’s blanket ban on Extinction Rebellion protest during the October Rebellion was unlawful, in a landmark judgment that reasserts the fundamental right to peaceful protest. The ruling follows a judicial review – brought on behalf of Extinction Rebellion by Baroness Jenny Jones, Caroline Lucas, Clive Lewis, David Drew, Ellie Chowns MEP, Adam Allnut and George Monbiot – into the legality of the Met’s attempt to shut down all Extinction Rebellion protests during most of the second week of the Autumn Rebellion.

In fact, he represents the War Economy to a T: he values greed and profit above people and planet. Okinawan People Oppose U.S. Military Base Expansion

Okinawa is an island prefecture of Japan, located about 400 miles south of the rest of Japan. For years, there has been a campaign to stop the construction of the new U.S. military base at Henoko, located in the northern part of Okinawa. In a referendum held February 24, 2019, 72 percent voted against the new military base. Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki and the Okinawan Assembly have actively opposed the base construction, but the U.S. and Japanese governments continue with the construction plans—in direct disregard for the will of the Okinawan people.

At the edge of hope lies the gunfire from what Frantz Fanon called ‘the old granite block upon which the nation rests’. At the moment of protest, when the gunfire starts, clarity arrives. One should not be naïve about the character of the elite, whose smiles camouflage the instructions given through clenched teeth to the henchmen, their ‘simple men’ ready to kill the ‘simple people’. At its best, the ‘granite block’ shrugs, shuffles its cabinet, offers modest reforms; at its worst, its soldiers – their faces covered to prevent the tears from showing – fire at their family members.
