Protest War And Racism, In Chicago, On August 25th

In calling for this demonstration, the Chicago Committee Against War and Racism declares that in many respects we are confronting worse evils today than we were 50 years ago — but we are still confronting the same institutional barriers to peace and progress. Just 11 days ago, U.S.-led coalition warplanes in Syria conducted intensive airstrikes near Abu Kamal in the Deir ez-Zor province, with estimates of civilian casualties ranging from 30 to 54, the higher estimate coming from The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. All too typically, this received little media attention. It was not part of the so-called “national conversation.” But acts like these, occurring on a regular basis, need to become part of the national conversation, and that is part of what motivates us to call for this protest. These acts of aggressive war are not somehow magically transformed into moral acts simply because relatively few U.S. personnel are at risk of harm.

Some Arrested As Right-Wing Rally Clashes With Counter-Protesters

Small scuffles broke out Saturday as police in Portland, Oregon, deployed “flash bang” devices and other means to disperse hundreds of right-wing and self-described anti-fascist protesters. There were arrests and some injuries, but it wasn’t immediately clear how many. A reporter for The Oregonian/OregonLive was bloodied when he was struck by a projectile. Eder Campuzano said later on Twitter he was “okay.” Demonstrators aligned with Patriot Prayer and an affiliated group, the Proud Boys, gathered around mid-day in a riverfront park. Hundreds of demonstrators faced them from across the street, holding banners and signs with opposition messages such as “Alt right scum not welcome in Portland.” Some chanted “Nazis go home.”

Crew Walks Off Job After Racist Boss Fires Latino Coworkers: ‘We Rise Together Homie’

US labor history is full of moments of tremendous drama and upheaval. That history is riveting stuff, but getting a raw, unfiltered view of the human drama of workers fighting their bosses on the shop floor, the place where the day-to-day confrontation between workers and bosses takes place (and occasionally boils over), is rare. Which is what makes Antoine Dangerfield’s recent viral video a must-watch. A thirty-year-old welder in Indianapolis, Dangerfield worked for a construction contractor building a UPS hub. On Tuesday, he says that a small number of Latino workers (millwrights, welders, and conveyor installers, in his telling) working for a different contractor but in the same hub were ordered home after disobeying the orders of a white boss he calls racist.

Our Solidarity Is Stronger Than Their Hate

The renewed threat of the far right is another frightening feature of the Trump era, but we have solidarity and unity to rely on in building resistance and a left alternative.  AT THE start of August one year ago, the far right in the U.S. was preparing for its boldest moment yet during the Trump era: two days of strutting and bullying on the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, at their “Unite the Right” rally. They claimed they were exercising their “free speech,” but the white supremacists’ real purpose — deadly violence — was exposed when a Nazi used his car as a murder weapon to plow into a march of anti-racist demonstrators, injuring numerous people and killing Heather Heyer. Horror at Heyer’s murder was compounded by outrage at Donald Trump for pandering to the racists with his comment that there were “good people” among the thugs.

Freedom Rider: Blacks Need To Stop Calling The Enemy “We” And “Us”

It is a sad to see black people speak of themselves in the first person when referencing the United States government, its intelligence agencies, and war-making apparatus. Two years of relentless war propaganda has conflated opposition to Trump with the interests of the ruling elites. Words such as “our allies,” “our intelligence community,” and “our democracy” should never come out of a black person’s mouth.” The desire to be rid of the racist-in-chief has caused a new epidemic of mental illness. This sorry spectacle did not begin with Trump. It started when black people were elevated to positions of power previously reserved for whites. The yearning to see the black face in a high place created a sickness from which too few have recovered.

4 Years After Eric Garner’s Death, We’re Still Waiting For Justice

Four years ago today, Eric Garner was killed on Staten Island by police. The 43-year-old father died after he was put in a chokehold by New York Police Department Officer Daniel Pantaleo. His last words, “I can’t breathe” — repeated 11 times while half a dozen officers did nothing to intervene — helped fuel a movement for police accountability that continues today. Yesterday, the city announced that, after waiting more than three years for a federal investigation into Garner’s killing to conclude, it will move forward with its own inquiry into Garner’s death. In a letter to the Department of Justice, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Lawrence Byrne wrote that if the Justice Department does not publicly announce whether it will bring charges against Pantaleo by August 31, the city will serve Pantaleo with departmental charges and try him in an administrative trial in early 2019.

Knesset’s New Nation State Law Codifies Israel As An Apartheid State

Now, with the haggling and the opposition members’ delay tactics over, the final version of the bill has been approved by the Knesset. This law, which has been described as the legislative “Flagship” of the current government, is officially named “Basic Law – Israel as The Nation State of the Jewish People” has become one of Israel’s Basic Laws — laws that, in the absence of a Constitution, have constitutional standing. This law has been discussed for several years now; it has evolved, however, and has become extreme to a degree that even right-wing politicians like Benny Begin, the son of former Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and former Likud Defense Minister Moshe Arens, who originally supported the bill, now oppose it.

American Jews Slam Israel’s ‘Racist’ Nation-State Bill As Thousands Protest Against It In Tel Aviv

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Israeli capital in protest against the so-called nation-state bill, which, they say, would enable ethnic segregation. The controversial bill also drew criticism from US Jews. Demonstrators marched through the streets of Tel Aviv chanting: “Full equality and no less,” “Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies" and "The nation bill is a disaster," according to witnesses. "The Nation-State Law would turn racism, discrimination, and segregation into an inescapable part of our lives. More than that – racism and discrimination are becoming desired and central in the State of Israel. The Nation-State Law will bring exclusion and damage to minorities to terrifying levels we have never seen before. Our stance is clear: all citizens –all– are equal,” the organizers of the rally stated, as cited by the Jerusalem Post.

White Nationalists Plan Event Across From The White House

The racist Nazis are looking for a fight. Shall we give them what they want? I propose no. Let’s not stoop to their level. Instead let’s organize a “Celebration of Diversity” in another location, which will be a hundred times larger than their sorry rally. That will show how puny they are and how massive we are. Our “Love Fest” will be a stark contrast to their “Hate Fest.” If we confront them with counter-hatred, it will just let Trump again claim, “There was violence on both sides.” If we plan to get in their face, it will keep our numbers a lot lower, removing the advantage of showing the world a gigantic rally for peace and love. If we confront them with counter-hatred, it will just let Trump again claim, “There was violence on both sides.” If we plan to get in their face, it will keep our numbers a lot lower, removing the advantage of showing the world a gigantic rally for peace and love.

Congress Welcomes An Actual Fascist As Nazi Violence Rages In Ukraine

At a packed meeting in the Senate, the Grayzone's Max Blumenthal asked organizers whether it was appropriate for Congress and the American Foreign Policy Society to be coddling the founder of two neo-Nazi parties. The response to his questions elicited ranged from bizarre to deeply troubling. Organized sought to cover-up his extremist viewpoints and dodge questions from Blumenthal about anti-semitism. These meeting continues the bipartisan alliance between the United States and neonazis who were part of the US funded and supported coup in Ukraine. The coup has resulted in a rise in anti-semitism in Ukraine as well as consistent belligerence to Russia which is on its border.

The Supreme Court, Social Progress, And The Continued Supremacy Of White Racism And Capitalism

WASHINGTON –  Despite widespread outrage and resistance, Hurricane Donald shows absolutely no sign of abating as it throws domestic and international politics into disarray. President Trump has been unsparing in his push to pursue his agenda, attacking opponents on both sides of the aisle without mercy while throwing convention to the wind in regard to issues ranging from immigration to diplomacy, the #MeToo movement to global trade. Through it all, the Supreme Court has served as a key ally, delivering devastating rulings on issues ranging from immigrants’ subjection to indefinite detention, gerrymandering, collective bargaining, and the discriminatory travel ban or “Muslim Ban.”

“No More Racist Bosses”: Why Workers At A Suburban Target Store Are Protesting

A small group of workers at retailer Target Corporation is demanding accountability from local store managers in the Baltimore area, highlighting issues of discrimination and fair scheduling that affect retail workers nationwide. The workers at the Target outlet in suburban Cockeysville staged a demonstration this week, gathering support from the local labor rights community to demand that some managers be fired for allegedly racist and sexist behavior, and that the company address fair scheduling issues. Led by Target employees Erica Feldenzer and Sarah Shifflet, the group issued its demands July 3 as it gathered just inside the entrance to the store, and then led a walkout and picket that attracted unusual police attention.

Political Theater And The Immigration Crisis: A Two-Party Problem

President Donald Trump has come under fire of late for reviving an outdated policy of the Bush II era. The Trump Administration has spent the last few months enforcing a “zero tolerance” border policy predicated upon the separation of migrant children from their families. Thousands of migrant children have been detained at the border in makeshift shelters and detention centers, which are fancy words for prisons. Wall to wall opposition to the practice has emerged from the Democratic Party, a section of the Republican Party, and the corporate media. Tears have been shed and terms like fascism have been once again hurled at Trump by his opponents. What it all amounts to is political theater, which has sown utter confusion into the discourse surrounding the immigration crisis.

Hundreds Call For ICE To Be Abolished And Protest Operation Streamline

Hundreds gathered in Chicano Park this week for a rally and march through downtown San Diego to call for an end to family separations, the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and to cancel the implementation of Operation Streamline. The federal program being expanded along California’s border, Operation Streamline, which creates fast tracked mass prosecutions of people caught crossing the United States-Mexico border without documentation, is expected to begin this month in California. Protesters included San Diego residents and hundreds of others who traveled from all across California and around the country. The march and rally were organized by Mijente and a number of interfaith and civil rights organizations. Mijente is a national Latinx organization mobilizing against immigration enforcement and criminalization of migrants.

Protesters Block Expressway After Officer Who Shot Antwon Rose Granted Bail

Protesters shut down a portion of the Tri-Boro Expressway outside Pittsburgh on Thursday after the officer who shot and killed 17-year-old Antwon Rose was released on bail. East Pittsburgh police officer Michael Rosfeld shot Rose, who was unarmed, three times, including once in the back as the teen fled a traffic stop on June 19. Rosfeld, 30, was charged with criminal homicide and released on a $250,000 bail on Wednesday, despite opposition from prosecutors, according to The New York Times.  About 85 people blocked an area of the Tri-Boro Expressway, demanding Rosfeld’s bail be revoked, Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs told HuffPost. “[The police] are allowing them to proceed right now, as they are peaceful in the area in they are in, as the police are able to divert traffic around them,” she said.
