In Letter To American People, Iranian President Raps Sanctions

On behalf of the great Iranian nation, I write to the people of the United States of America on the occasion of the Iranian New Year (Nowruz). The coronavirus outbreak has endangered the health of—and even presented a considerable threat to—humanity with no distinction as to nationality, or gender or religious backgrounds. This presents an opportune moment to further contemplate our common pains and our human principles. Today, all of humankind feels apprehensive toward the future; a future threatened in every aspect; be it health, business, and even social relationships and the way of life. The level of unpredictability and uncertainty is simply unprecedented. It is self-evident that our success in what is likely to be a long fight depends on the spiritual and heartfelt affinity of all human beings.

Eight Countries Under Unilateral Sanctions Ask UN Chief For Help

United Nations — Eight countries under unilateral sanctions, mainly from the United States and European Union, urged U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday to request the immediate and complete lifting of those measures to enable the nations to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. In a joint letter obtained by The Associated Press, the ambassadors from China, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria and Venezuela urged the U.N. chief to “reject the politicization of such a pandemic.” The ambassadors, who said they were under instructions from their foreign ministers, did not name any countries responsible for what they called “illegal, coercive measures of economic pressure.” But the United States has imposed sanctions on all of the nations except China and the European Union has imposed sanctions on all but Cuba.

United Nations Expert: “The United States Is Committing Crimes Against Humanity”

It was recently confirmed that the former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, won the last presidential election in October. He was forced to resign in a US-assisted coup that has brought a violent and fascist government into power. We speak with Alfred de Zayas, a legal expert on civil and political rights and an independent expert to the United Nations, about the legal implications of the coup and interference by the United States in other countries besides Bolivia. Mr. de Zayas describes the US government's history of flouting international law and why the international legal system is unable to enforce those laws. He also discusses the COVID-19 pandemic and what the world needs in this time of crisis.

Stop Tightening The Thumb Screws, A Humanitarian Message

U.S. sanctions against Iran, cruelly strengthened in March of 2018, continue a collective punishment of extremely vulnerable people. Presently, the U.S. “maximum pressure” policy severely undermines Iranian efforts to cope with the ravages of COVID-19, causing hardship and tragedy while contributing to the global spread of the pandemic. On March 12, 2020...

Epidemic Exacerbation: Washington’s Shameful Record Of Hypocrisy.

There are times when President Trump’s overt race-baiting and cynical nativism are almost refreshing.  And no doubt, as photos emerge showing his brazen personal edits - crossing out the word “Corona,” and substituting “China” -virus - to a recent speech, it seems The Donald has finally traded in his “dog-whistle” for a “dog-bullhorn.”  Sort of reminds one of the early 1980s, when it wasn't uncommon to refer to AIDS as “GRIDS” (Gay-related immunodeficiency) - or the “gay plague” - and the dereliction of then President Reagan’s response, whereby he didn't even speak publicly on the disease until 1985. Nevertheless, unconscionable as the current president’s cynical, divisive opportunism is, it shouldn't surprise anyone.  While hardly an apology for “Trump-being-Trump,” that’s ultimately what this is; and his “liberal” opponents should (but won’t) take cautious before making COVID-19 all about the current occupant of the Oval Office.

US Imposes Fresh Sanctions On Iran Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday that Washington had blacklisted three Iranian entities for engaging in what he called “significant transactions” to trade in Iranian petrochemicals. While he did not name any firms or individuals, Pompeo said the measure included blacklisting Iran’s armed forces social security investment company and its director for investing in the sanctioned entities.

Cruelty Of Sanctions During Pandemic

Swiftly moves the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), dashing across continents, skipping over oceans, terrifying populations in every country. The numbers of those infected rise, as do the numbers of those who have died. Hands are being washed, tests are being done, and “social distance” has become a new phrase. It is unclear how devastating this pandemic will be.

China Calls For Lifting Of U.S. Sanctions Against Iran

Amid the fight against the coronavirus COVID-19, China called on March 16 for the immediate lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. China’s call came in response to a letter sent by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to leaders of several countries. Rouhani accused the U.S. government of continuing to thwart Iran’s efforts to counter the pandemic...

Sanctions Against Iran And Venezuela During A Pandemic Are Cruel

Swiftly moves the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), dashing across continents, skipping over oceans, terrifying populations in every country. The numbers of those infected rises, as do the numbers of those who have died. Hands are being washed, tests are being done, social distancing has become a new phrase. It is unclear how devastating this pandemic will be; certainly, the experience of the 1918-1920 Spanish Flu hangs heavily...

Venezuela Confirms Coronavirus Cases As US Slaps New Sanctions

Mérida, March 13, 2020 (venezuelanalysis.com) – The Venezuelan government has confirmed the first cases of the coronavirus in the country. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez announced on Friday that two people had tested positive for Covid-19 in Miranda State. Both had recently arrived from Spain, and all passengers who shared the flights have been ordered into quarantine.

To Help Stem Coronavirus, Lift Sanctions On Iran

The COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic is far from the first proof of how intertwined we are as a global community. The climate crisis and the refugee crisis have long been glaring examples that the wars or CO2 emissions on one continent risk the lives and well-being of people on another continent. What coronavirus is providing...

United States Imposed Economic Sanctions—The Big Heist

Since the start of the great recession in 2008 the U.S. has become increasingly dependent on the use of unilateral economic sanctions to achieve its policy objectives against its declared targets. Presently, sanctions impact one-third of humanity in 39 countries. Economic sanctions not only cause untold death and devastation to a given country by denying it access to U.S.-dominated markets...

BigPharma’s Role: U.S. Sanctions Lead To Global Rise In Coronavirus

March 10 – As COVID-19 (coronavirus) spreads, it is a clear reminder that germs and viruses don’t respect national boundaries in an interconnected world. But the mainstream press has certainly not publicized how corporate capitalism and imperialism cross national boundaries to destroy people’s health.

Sanctions In Gaza

Feb. 9 — The hardships in Gaza are well known, but the human implications of the blockade are rarely documented in the Western press. This is because the interests of Israel, the U.S. and other nations supporting these sanctions would not be well served by the truth. Let us be clear, these are Israel’s sanctions imposed as an occupying power, but this form of collective punishment upon an already impoverished civilian population is heavily backed by the U.S...

Corruption Of Sanctions & Tariffs Ignored By The Media

The news is filled with stories about President Trump and his predecessors imposing sanctions on other countries, their officials, and other prominent persons. But the media rarely spells out exactly what these sanctions are, the intermediaries who enforce them, the impacts they have on innocent civilians – women, men and children – how they are countered or evaded, and whether they fulfill or undermine their diplomatic, military, or economic purposes.
