Boat Blockade At Ineos Oil Refinery

Scotland - Climate activists have blocked the gates of the Ineos refinery at Grangemouth with boats in a protest against pollution. Extinction Rebellion Scotland claims Ineos is Scotland’s biggest climate polluter and is staging the blockade as part of a programme of action. Small groups of no more than six people have locked themselves together at the gates and aim to remain there all day. Two boats are being used to block the entrances to the refinery and the headquarters.

Glasgow’s Far-Right Violence Is A Warning To Anti-Fascists

Many of those who organised around the exemplary “no evictions” campaign over the last couple of years gathered to show solidarity and support for people with no vote, no opportunity to work, no money, and living in a new country having fled conditions which were often the stuff of nightmares. Sadly, this was met with a “counter-protest.” Quite how anyone could protest against people being given decent food to eat should be beyond comprehension – but for the far-right, this seemed too much like treating people from other places and races with dignity. Two sets of people faced-off. One set of working-class people who defended those who had nothing, who stood by the oppressed in the best traditions of the city – and another set defending the establishment, its grubby treatment of the most marginalised and its statues, including many of those in that square who would never have lifted a finger for the working-class in their lives.

Scottish Parliament Votes For Immediate Suspension Of ‘Weapons Of Oppression’ Exports To US

The Scottish Parliament has called for the immediate suspension of exports of riot gear, tear gas and rubber bullets to the United States, in light of the police response to the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests. A successful motion, which was backed by 52 votes to 0 with 11 abstentions, says the parliament "stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and considers that the UK government must immediately suspend all export licences for tear gas, rubber bullets and riot gear to the US". Patrick Harvie, the Green MSP who proposed the successful amendment, said the "weapons of oppression", which the UK government has granted active export licences for, were being used by a "racist state" to "brutalise marginalise communities". The same motion also called for the establishment of a slavery museum in Scotland "to address our historic links with the slave trade".

Former UK Ambassador Craig Murray Indicted

… I know of four pro-[Scottish] Independence folk who were last week phoned or visited by Police Scotland and threatened with contempt of court proceedings over social media postings they had made weeks back on the Alex Salmond case. "Then on Monday, a Scottish journalist I know had his home raided by five policemen, who confiscated (and still have) all his computers and phones. They said they were from the “Alex Salmond team” and investigating his postings on the Alex Salmond case. He has not to date been charged, and his lawyer is advising him at present to say nothing, so I am not revealing his name. “Then on Tuesday morning, a large Police van full of police pulled up onto the pavement right outside my front gate, actually while I was talking on the phone to a senior political figure about the raid on my friend.

Thousands Take To Edinburgh Streets For ‘Biggest Scottish Independence March Ever’

Groups and organisations who support separation from the UK joined the All Under One Banner (AUOB) procession on Saturday. Organisers AUOB hope to get at least 100,000 people to take part in the rally. Gemma MacFadyen has backed Scottish independence since she was a child. The 34-year-old from Edinburgh said: "I'm here to support the cause for independence. "To be honest, after the last referendum I was a bit deflated and disenfranchised and I was not going to be taking part anymore.

A Boom In Renewables Education As Scotland Upskills

A new study has revealed the sheer volume of training underway as the country upskills for climate emergency, new statistics reveal. The research, the first of its kind, showed an “enormous range of courses” on offer from Borders to Highlands. And more than a third of the students taking up the opportunity to work in the green industrial revolution are women. The new figures were calculated by industry lobby Scottish Renewables using a series of Freedom of Information requests. Thirty one higher education institutions are offering courses, ranging from Energy Finance and Policy at the University of Edinburgh) and Countryside Management at Scotland’s Rural College to Tourism Sustainability and Climate Change at the University of Glasgow and Engineering Systems at Dundee and Angus College.

A Urinal In A Scottish Pub Reveals Why Toilets Matter In International Politics

If you wanted to see international politics in action, where would you go? Maybe the UN headquarters in New York to see diplomats debating resolutions of global import? Or drop in on one of the world’s many financial hubs, where trading shapes international markets and determines the success or failure of nations. But you probably wouldn’t visit a toilet in a Glasgow pub, would you? Our research analyses the political significance of the urinal in the Lismore—a traditional Scottish pub in the Partick area of Glasgow—and argues that mundane spaces like this are important for understanding contemporary international politics.

Socialist Equality Party stalls were also set up in Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds to promote upcoming public meetings in those cities. Strikers march to Glasgow Council's city chambers for a mass rally during a 48 hour strike by 8,000 GMB and Unison members over an equal pay claim. SCOTLAND’S largest city was brought to a standstill today as women workers made history in the largest ever strike over equal pay. Care workers, cleaners and school dinner ladies were among 8,000 women council employees and contractors staging a two-day walkout in Glasgow. They will form picket lines again this morning to demand back payments for being paid less than council workers in male-dominated departments. Thousands of women members of Unison and GMB led a march from Glasgow Green to the City Chambers in George Square, chanting: “What do we want? Equal pay!

Scotland Bringing Basic Income to Life

People living in the Scottish cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, and North Ayrshire may soon receive an unconditional monthly sum as part of a series of universal basic income pilots currently being explored with support from the local government. In a world where jobs are being increasingly taken over by machines, leaders have started to recognize that the welfare safety net will need to change. Advocates of universal basic income believe that the unconditional offer of a regular, though tiny, sum of money could help many get back on their feet, and even encourage them to invest in new business ideas.

Holland To Finland To Scotland, Basic Income Could Be A Reality Across Europe

By Steve Rushton for Occupy - Universal basic income is emerging as a realistic policy position across Europe. As we reported in late 2015, local authorities across the Netherlands are currently running trials to award every citizen unconditional money from the state. And this year, Finland started an experiment of 2,000 randomly selected people, all of whom currently receive out of work benefits. The first monthly payments of €560 ($590) were paid into those people's accounts within the last week, and the trial will examine the impact of that money on overall employment. Now, sweeping further to the west, plans are underway to establish basic income in the Scottish councils of Glasgow and Fife, revealing a groundswell of interest that is sweeping the continent.

Universal Basic Income Trials Being Considered In Scotland

By Libby Brooks for The Guardian - Scotland looks set to be the first part of the UK to pilot a basic income for every citizen, as councils in Fife and Glasgow investigate trial schemes in 2017. The councillor Matt Kerr has been championing the idea through the ornate halls of Glasgow City Chambers, and is frank about the challenges it poses. “Like a lot of people, I was interested in the idea but never completely convinced,” he said. But working as Labour’s anti-poverty lead on the council, Kerr says that he “kept coming back to the basic income”. Kerr sees the basic income as a way of simplifying the UK’s byzantine welfare system. “But it is also about solidarity: it says that everyone is valued and the government will support you.

Scotland Just Generated More Power Than It Needs From Wind Turbines Alone

By Staff of Science Alert - Last Sunday, Scotland achieved something great - for the first time on record, wind power alone generated 106 percent of Scotland’s electricity needs in a single day. Environmental group WWF Scotland has just confirmed that on 7 August 2016, wind turbines in Scotland pumped 39,545 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity into the National Grid, while the nation's homes, businesses, and industry needed just 37,202 MWh.

Scotland Bans Fracking: “No Ifs, No Buts, No Fracking”

By Claudia Beamish for The Scotsman - But the move will pile the pressure on energy minister Paul Wheelhouse to rule out fracking in the long-term when he eventually rules on the issue. Nationalist MSPs abstained on a motion calling for the practice to be ruled out in future, allowing the combined Labour, Green and Liberal Democrat ranks to out-vote the Tories. The vote does not oblige the government to impose the ban, but Labour immediately called for the Scottish Government to respect the decision reached by MSPs.

Trump Hotels Occupied In Scotland To Protest Trump’s Statements

By Mark McDougall for Mirror - Hotels owned by controversial US Presidential hopeful Donald Trump were occupied today by fuming protesters. The loudmouthed right wing billionaire has sparked fury with a series of outlandish statements and pressure group RISE claim to have swooped on two of the 69-year-old's hotels in Scotland. The group, which is a collective of left wing people, claim to have been in the Trump International Hotel in Aberdeenshire and also at the Turnberry hotel and golf course in Ayrshire.
