UK Top Court Gives Uber Drivers Benefits In Landmark Ruling

London - Uber drivers in Britain should be classed as “workers” and not self-employed, the U.K. Supreme Court ruled Friday, in a decision that threatens the company’s business model and holds broader implications for the so-called gig economy. The ruling paves the way for Uber drivers to get benefits such as paid holidays and the minimum wage, handing defeat to the ride-hailing giant in the culmination of a long-running legal battle. The Supreme Court’s seven judges unanimously rejected Uber’s appeal against an employment tribunal ruling, which had found that two Uber drivers were “workers” under British law. Yaseen Aslam and James Farrar, the two drivers, cheered the outcome.

Alena Douhan is the United Nations’ special rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights. Douhan visited Venezuela on 1 February “to assess the impact of unilateral sanctions on the enjoyment of human rights by people living in Venezuela and any other affected people”. On 12 February, Douhan published her preliminary findings based on “extensive consultations with a wide range of interlocutors”. The UN independent expert recognised the negative impact of coercive sanctions on human rights and urged European banks to “unfreeze assets of the Venezuela Central Bank”.

Buoyed by President Joe Biden's announced decision to limit U.S. involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, U.K. peace activists on Friday renewed calls for the British government to stop selling weapons to Saudi Arabia. The Stop the War Coalition called Biden's move "a welcome change to U.S. foreign policy," and the group's convener, Lindsey German, said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab should now follow his lead. German accused both Johnson and Raab of having "blood on their hands" in what the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis. "Their support for the carnage in Yemen," said German, "must end immediately."

Palestine Action co-founder Richard Goddard was arrested for blackmail on 3 February, just days after the group launched a joint action with Extinction Rebellion that shut down the premises of Israeli arms firm Elbit Systems. The arrest, which was filmed, took place at around 3pm and Goddard was taken to Fresh Wharf Custody Base, London. Both he and co-founder Huda Ammori reportedly had their passports seized during the raid. Palestine Action has accused the police of ‘harassment.

UK Turns To ‘Counterterror’ Law To Repress Palestine Action

Solidarity campaigners shut down an Israeli drone parts factory in the UK for several hours last week. Three activists from Palestine Action were arrested outside the Elbit Systems factory in Shenstone in the Midlands on 18 January. This is the third time the factory has been hit in five months. Red paint symbolizing the deaths of Palestinians was also sprayed across the factory front yard. In a Palestine Action video, an unnamed activist said she was “here today because Britain has been complicit in the colonization of Palestine since over 100 years ago with the Balfour Declaration.” Elbit is Israel’s largest private arms company and markets its weapons as “battle tested” on Palestinians in Gaza. It has 10 factories and offices in the UK.

They took over the Conservative Party headquarters, hanging red and black flags from the rooftop and surrounding the building with barricades. The demonstration marked the rebirth of the British student movement and the beginning of a new generation of activists that would confront marketization and austerity over the coming decade. Though students could not stop the further commodification of higher education, they succeeded in generating a culture of anti-market resistance, popularized the demand for public free education and contributed to the rise of democratic socialism in the UK.

An Iraqi politician accused the UK private security company G4S of being involved in the assassination of Iranian Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani. The commander of the Quds Force of the Corps of Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC) of Iran, Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani, and the deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Units of Iraq (Al-Hashad Al-Shabi in Arabic), Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, were martyred on January 3 in a drone strike perpetrated by the US in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. This Monday the leader of the Iraqi political party Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Qais Al-Jazali, accused the British company G4S—responsible for the security of Baghdad International Airport—of involvement in the murder of Soleimani, Al-Muhandis and other Iranian and Iraqi commanders.

ICC Drops Inquiry Into British War Crimes In Iraq

The International Criminal Court (ICC) decided, on December 9, to abandon its inquiry into war crimes committed by British forces during the Iraq war, despite its investigation having concluded that there were reasonable grounds to believe war crimes were in fact committed. Fatou Bensouda, the ICC’s Chief Prosecutor, announced in a public statement that she had decided to close the preliminary examination and not pursue an investigation into war crimes committed by the British Armed Forces in Iraq. The Chief Prosecutor also confirmed in her statement that despite closing the case, the report had found “…that there is a reasonable basis to believe that members of the British armed forces committed the war crimes of willful killing, torture, inhuman/cruel treatment, outrages upon personal dignity, and rape and/or other forms of sexual violence.”

Guaido’s Team Told To Comply With UK Court Order In Gold Litigation

London - According to the London-based legal firm Zaiwalla & Co., Guaido’s lawyers sought to argue during an administrative hearing held on Thursday at the London Commercial High Court that they were unable to produce the £400.000 ($529.000) required because of the sanctions in place against Venezuela by the United States. The BCV counsellor noted that the losing side only raised the issue of the sanctions after the October 20 payment deadline had passed, so judge Sara Cockerill warned them that they should find better excuses, or they will be in “all sort of trouble” for failing to comply with a UK court order.

University of Manchester, UK - Teaching staff held a show of solidarity with their students following a 'racial profiling' row at the University of Manchester. Lecturers also voiced their support for students protesting at the university's handling of the coronavirus crisis. A group of staff read out a statement at the Fallowfield Campus on Tuesday afternoon telling students: 'We are with you. We are here for you'. And they told black students and students of colour 'who may be feeling particularly hurt and excluded from the university at the moment' that 'you do belong here'.

We have been used as scapegoats for government failings, and forced to pay rents that 74% of us cannot meet – since students usually work to make ends meet. All this while Nancy Rothwell, our Vice-Chancellor who chairs the Russell Group, championed the use of chartered flights to coax international students into an environment that she must know is unsafe.
