The UN Is Failing To Protect Palestine Despite Demands To Take Action

Margaret Flowers: You left the United Nations on October 28th of 2023, the same month that Palestinians broke out of Gaza, which has been referred to as the world's largest open-air prison. Can you talk about how that impacted you and your decision to leave the United Nations? Craig Mokhiber: 2023 was a particularly disturbing year for the world and also for me. When this new government took control in Palestine and Israel in the beginning of 2023, it immediately announced that the gloves were off and that the country's policy of incremental genocide that had gone on for decades would be replaced with an expedited form of attacking Palestinians. In the spring, there was a violent upsurge in racially-based attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, including full-scale pogroms in villages like Huwara, by Israeli settlers backed up by Israeli soldiers.

Trump And The UN’s New ‘Gang Suppression Force’ Will Invade An Already Occupied Haiti

On September 30th, the UN Security Council voted 12 in favour to none against, with 3 abstentions (China, Pakistan, Russian Federation), “to authorise Member States to transition the Multinational Security Support mission [in Haiti] to the Gang Suppression Force for an initial period of 12 months. Among other terms, the organ decided that the Force shall have an authorized personnel ceiling of 5,550, consisting of 5,500 uniformed personnel — comprised of both military and police — and 50 civilians.” The UN stated that the mission is scheduled to be for just one year, but all evidence points towards an extended occupation with the U.S. using The Global Fragility Act which Trump signed into law in 2020 to justify the action.

‘No Doubt They Will Attack’: Max Blumenthal Meets Iran’s President

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived late to a September 24, 2025 meeting with American antiwar figures on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He had come from a fateful tete-a-tete with Emmanuel Macron, where he attempted to cajole his French counterpart into delaying expiration of the JCPOA nuclear deal rather than instituting snapback sanctions. Pezeshkian’s lobbying was fruitless; the Europeans had already decided to ratchet up the economic war on Tehran. Meanwhile, Israel was preparing for another attack on Iran with American support practically guaranteed. “No doubt they will attack Iran. And we will defend ourselves vigorously,” Pezeshkian declared to his audience of about 25 antiwar journalists, activists and think tank analysts gathered inside a conference hall in a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

Iran Recalls Envoys From Germany, France And United Kingdom

Iran has recalled its ambassadors from Germany, France, and the UK for consultations, state media reported on 27 September, after the three European states triggered the UN mechanism to reinstate sanctions. The Foreign Ministry said the decision was taken in response to the “irresponsible action” of the European trio in reviving UN Security Council resolutions that had been repealed under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).  The sanctions, scheduled to take effect at midnight, will impose restrictions on Iran’s banking, shipping, arms purchases and nuclear cooperation. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told reporters that Washington and its allies were seeking to topple the Islamic Republic under the guise of the nuclear dispute.

The Most Urgent Priority Is To Create A New International Order

As we deliberate here, 2.2 million human beings in Gaza are condemned to starvation by the actions of genocide, extermination, and ethnic cleansing carried out by the Zionist regime, which has the military and financial supplies and impunity guaranteed by the United States government. On behalf of the government and people of Cuba, I reiterate our strongest solidarity with the Palestinian people and their just cause for freedom, independence, and an end to the Zionist occupation. If the Security Council proves powerless due to the veto that the United States exercises or threatens to exercise, and is unable to take effective measures to stop the barbarism, this General Assembly has the duty and the capacity to promote concrete measures without delay.

Israeli PM Gets A New York Welcome Outside The United Nations

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to a half-empty room at the UN General Assembly, thousands of protesters were gathered in Times Square to condemn his presence in New York City. Netanyahu was issued an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in November 2024, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Gaza since October 2023. All members of the ICC, which includes the United States, are legally obliged to enforce the warrants, though Hungary, an Israeli ally, has officially begun the process of withdrawal from the ICC. The Israeli prime minister gave a combative speech to a nearly empty UN General Assembly hall on Friday, where he portrayed himself as the standard-bearer of mainstream Israel in rejecting the creation of a Palestinian state and denouncing Israel's genocide in Gaza as “a joke”.

Momentum Builds For Sweeping United Nations Reforms

In March of this year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the UN80 Initiative, a system-wide reform effort. UN80 proposals center around reshaping how the United Nations works, including goals which are intended to make the body more efficient and cost-effective. There are more ambitious proposals, including plans to move major UN agencies including UNICEF, UNFPA, and UN Women from western cities such as New York to Nairobi, Kenya.  But some are calling for an even more transformative agenda of reform, which could shift long-standing power imbalances in the UN from the West and towards other regions. “The agenda set by the UN is focused on its own organisational weaknesses and does not address the largely political questions that scuttle the UN’s work,” writes Vijay Prashad.

Diplomats And Activists Gather To Commemorate Historic Meeting Between Fidel And Malcolm X

Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Fernández de Cossío, along with Cuban diplomats from the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, gathered in Harlem alongside US-based activists and organizational leaders to commemorate the historic meeting between Fidel Castro and Malcolm X which took place 65 years ago. “The meeting at the Hotel Theresa was not a photo-op or passing event,” said Manolo De Los Santos, the executive director of New York City-based movement incubator The People’s Forum. De Los Santos addressed the crowd gathered in the Riverside Church in Harlem. “It was a profound act of solidarity that showed the world a different way forward.”

Israel Is Committing Genocide In Gaza, UN Commission Says

A United Nations commission has conclusively stated that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. This genocide has had the full support of the United States, under both Donald Trump and Joe Biden. In fact, since October 2023, the US government has vetoed six resolutions in the UN Security Council that called for peace in Gaza. The latest example was on 18 September, when 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council voted for a resolution that demanded a ceasefire and the release of all hostages. The United States was the only country that opposed it, and Washington has veto power, so it killed the measure.

Lawyers File Criminal Genocide Complaint Against 11 German Politicians And CEOs

A collective of Berlin lawyers, with the support of the European Legal Support Centre (ELSC), Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy (PIPD), and Law for Palestine has filed a formal criminal complaint for collusion in Israel’s genocide against eleven German government officials and arms trade executives. Zionist former foreign minister Annalena Baerbock, now president of the United Nations General Assembly, recently denied ever saying that Israel was justified in bombing hospitals and other civilian buildings in Gaza, despite having appeared on video saying it. In a dossier over a hundred pages long, the lawyers provide extensive evidence for the alleged collaboration in crimes under the Code of Crimes against International Law (CCAIL), specifically the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed by Israel.

Palestinian And Global Civil Society Call For Global Actions September 18

On September 2, 2025, the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO), which represents 150 Palestinian-led member organizations in Gaza and the West Bank, issued a Call for a Global Day of Action and Strike September 18th, 2025, endorsed by major grassroots organizations representing hundreds of millions of people around the globe (see PNGO’s Call for a full list of initial endorsers). This September 18 marks the deadline given by the UNGA in Resolution A/ES-10/L.31 for Israel to end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). The same resolution, which was issued September 18, 2024, also ordered Israel to immediately comply with the provisional measures in the genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Belgium To Recognize Palestine, Impose Sanctions On Israel

Belgium will join France in recognizing a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly session in New York this month, the country’s foreign minister announced on 2 September. “Palestine will be recognized by Belgium during the UN session! And firm sanctions are being imposed on the Israeli government. Any antisemitism or glorification of terrorism by Hamas supporters will also be more strongly condemned,” said Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot in a post on X. “In view of the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, and in light of the violence perpetrated by Israel in violation of international law – given its international obligations, including the duty to prevent any risk of genocide – Belgium had to take bold decisions to increase pressure on the Israeli government and the Hamas terrorists,” he added.

Washington Blocks Palestinian Leaders From Attending UN General Assembly

In an unprecedented move, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 29 August revoked visas for Palestinian Authority (PA) leaders scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York in September. The State Department justified the move by citing PA payments to the families of Palestinian martyrs, President Mahmoud Abbas' plan to use a "constitutional declaration" to declare an independent Palestinian state at the General Assembly meeting, and Palestinian efforts to hold Israel accountable for war crimes in international courts. "The Palestinian Authority must also cease its attempts to circumvent the negotiations through international legal campaigns, including appeals to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, and efforts to secure unilateral recognition of a possible Palestinian state," the State Department said in a statement.

Why Palestine Is Already A State

A combination of mistakes, whether through ignorance or design, and significant omissions of fact have left the American public misinformed about why the Palestinians have gone to the United Nations and what they are trying to achieve. The biggest error repeated across the media in hundreds of headlines and stories is that the Palestinians are seeking statehood at the U.N. In fact, Palestine is already legally a sovereign state and is seeking membership of the United Nations, not statehood. [It eventually opted for observer state status after the U.S. blocked membership.] The United Nations does not grant or recognize statehood. Only states can recognize other states bilaterally.

The Global Plastics Treaty Process Has Fallen Flat

Progress towards a legally binding global treaty on plastics pollution stalled and went into reverse this week. The United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, ran overtime. It’s likely to conclude this evening, without agreement. This is an incredibly disappointing result. As a member of the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty, I was hoping for action to genuinely curb plastic pollution. Our priorities included considering the whole life cycle rather than just disposal, setting targets to reduce plastic production, and regulating the use of harmful additives to reduce risks to human health. Unfortunately, vested interests hijacked the negotiations.
