Portland, Oregon was my sanctuary as a teenager. I was a weird kid, a label I mostly embraced. But being different in my hometown rural north Idaho was exhausting. When I needed to recharge myself, I would drive the nine hours to Portland to bask in the city that accepted me just as I was.
Maybe that is the Trump administration’s problem with Portland today: it is literally a sanctuary city.
Oregon became the first state to pass a sanctuary bill in 1987. Thirty years later, Portland passed a sanctuary city resolution. These laws prohibit state and city officials, including police, from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement.
Since September, President Trump has been threatening to send National Guard troops into Portland, ostensibly to quell protests in what he calls a “burning hell hole.” Oregon lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, however, united to reject this federal intervention in the Rose City, and are working together to prevent it.

The Black Alliance for Peace Africa Team and U.S. Out of Africa Network join the masses in Nigeria and across the African continent in mourning the tragic loss of our comrade and U.S. Out of Africa Network Steering Committee member, Abiodun Aremu.
Comrade Aremu was a Pan-Africanist and an internationalist in the truest sense. His profound understanding of the struggle extended beyond the borders of Nigeria, rooted in a deep commitment to the liberation of the entire African working class from the grip of imperialism. As a teacher and a steadfast general, his life was dedicated to the ideological and political work necessary for our collective emancipation, exemplified by his founding of the Amilcar Cabral Institute of Ideological Studies.
By Enabling Police Surveillance, Elected Officials Fuel Trump’s Agenda
In a remarkable series of avoidable mistakes, elected officials in Illinois have demonstrated to the rest of the country the impossibility of meaningful regulation of police use of surveillance technology.
In May of this year, 404 Media published evidence that Illinois automated license plate reader data was being accessed on behalf of federal agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as directly by law enforcement agencies across the country, including in Texas, who used the information for immigration enforcement and to monitor people seeking abortions.
US Control Of The Caribbean And Its Multiform War Against Venezuela

For centuries, the peoples of the Central American isthmus have had to face the consequences of the ambitions of European and US ruling elites for control of the Caribbean region. Since the 16th century, the great maritime powers, Spain, France, England and to a lesser extent Holland, disputed control of the islands and coasts of the Caribbean so as to exploit their natural resources and control the region’s commercial and military strategic points. For Nicaragua, foreign interference intensified greatly in the middle of the 19th century with the rivalry between European powers and North American elites over control of the routes of a possible interoceanic canal.
Canadians Are On Year Three Of A People’s Recession

A new Deloitte report is projecting 1.3 percent GDP growth for Canada this year. The same report says that as long as Donald Trump keeps the CUSMA carve-outs in his tariff plan—meaning that most of the goods we export to the United States won’t face tariffs—we can look forward to 1.7 percent growth next year. This would mark a return to the growth rates we saw in 2023 and 2024.
Economists seem cautiously optimistic that Canada will avoid a recession and return to a period of relative stability.
This should be great news. On paper, the economy has proved its resilience in the face of serious challenges. But why then do things feel increasingly precarious?
Warfare For Venezuela And Welfare For Argentina

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution has been in the vanguard of the Global South. In contrast, President Javiar Milei’s government in Argentina represents the logical, though absurd, consequence of extreme neoliberalism, which he calls “anarcho-capitalism.”
Western Hemispheric geopolitics reflect the weakening of US hegemony and an emerging multipolarity, especially with China’s entry as a major regional trading partner. US imperialism’s response, started well before Trump, has been to weaponize the dollar, impose illegal and crippling economic sanctions, and levy arbitrary tariffs. When these fail, the recourse is to military aggression.

Behind the fight against hate, a trend of repressing dissenting voices is emerging. Titled Criminalisation and Narrative Control: Solidarity with Palestine in the Crosshairs, the report documents how across all the countries studied, the dynamics observed since 7 October 2023 have intensified pre-existing structural trends: the continued shrinking of civic space, the weakening of democratic safeguards, the normalisation of Islamophobia, and the institutionalisation of racial profiling.
Under the guise of maintaining public order, fighting antisemitism, or protecting national security, authorities have resorted to exceptional measures such as bans on demonstrations, arbitrary arrests, repression within academic institutions, media censorship, and legislative threats.
Gaza’s Post-War Future And The Collapse Of Foreign Illusions

In the aftermath of the devastating war on Gaza, the most pressing question is no longer about a ceasefire or reconstruction, but about who will govern the enclave.
This is a struggle over meaning, legitimacy, and sovereignty. Will the future of Gaza be shaped by its people, or by the same foreign powers that helped destroy it under the banner of “salvation”?
Every time the gates of ‘reconstruction’ and ‘aid’ are opened, the windows of sovereignty are slammed shut. What unfolds is a recurring colonial spectacle: a Palestinian political order remade under foreign supervision, where ‘political realism’ is promoted as a substitute for justice, and ‘technocracy’ is marketed as a sterile alternative to resistance.
Trump Announces New ‘Kinetic Strike’ Off Venezuela’s Coast

On Tuesday, US ruler Donald Trump claimed that US military forces deployed in the Caribbean Sea carried out a new attack on a small boat “off the coast of Venezuela,” without specifying a precise location, killing six people he alleged were carrying drugs.
Since Sept. 2, Trump has allegedly ordered military strikes on at least five boats in the Caribbean Sea that his regime insists were carrying drugs to the US. This latest illegal action brings the number of extrajudicial killings committed by US military forces to 27 unidentified civilians.
Through Truth Social, the White House tenant published that his secretary of war, Peter Hegseth, ordered a “lethal kinetic attack” against a small boat supposedly off the coast of Venezuela, based on information allegedly provided by US intelligence.
SCOTUS Enters New Term: These Cases May Grant Trump Unbridled Authority

The Supreme Court’s new term, which began last week, presents the court with a monumental opportunity to hand Donald Trump unbridled executive authority and eviscerate the separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution. The court appears poised to rubber stamp many of Trump’s worst abuses, from the imposition of massive tariffs to seizing control of federal agencies created by Congress.
Although there are 39 cases on the court’s regular docket, it has already handled nearly 30 cases with temporary unsigned orders on its “emergency docket.” In those cases, the high court granted Trump’s requests to block orders from lower courts 20 times and ruled against his administration in only three cases; the others led to mixed rulings.
Media Refuse To Sign Up As Propagandists For Trump’s Pentagon
Nearly all media organizations refused to sign a censorship policy at the Pentagon that imposes greater control over credentialed reporters and the information that they publish.
The policy, championed by Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth, was first proposed in mid-September. It resulted in an immediate backlash because the policy required reporters to pledge not to share any military information, including unclassified information, unless that information is officially approved for release.
On October 6, the Pentagon revised the policy [PDF]. It changed to “military members” must seek approval from an “appropriate authorizing official” before releasing information to the press.

You know health care costs are starting to hit home when Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene raises the red flag.
In a posting on Twitter last week, the Republican Congresswoman from Georgia broke from Republican leadership in the House.
“I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to double, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district,” she wrote.
“No I’m not towing the party line on this, or playing loyalty games. I’m a Republican and won’t vote for illegals to have any taxpayer funded health care or benefits.”

The Israeli army killed several Palestinians in Gaza on 14 October despite the new ceasefire agreement which has taken effect across the strip.
In total, nine Palestinians were killed by Israeli ceasefire violations, Palestinian media reports said. Three bodies arrived at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, while another six arrived at Gaza City’s Baptist hospital. An Israeli quadcopter targeted civilians in Gaza City’s Shujaiya neighborhood while they were inspecting their homes.
Israeli artillery also shelled areas in Jabalia and Al-Tarans, accompanied by gunfire. There was also gunfire reported in the Al-Tahlia area of Khan Yunis in south Gaza.
Additionally, a group of young men near Al-Fukhari, east of Khan Yunis, was targeted by Israeli forces, resulting in one death.

The World Bank projects that 139 million Nigerians will be living in poverty by the end of this year, a nearly 60% increase from 87 million in 2023, when President Bola Tinubu started implementing the reforms it had prescribed on the first day of his term.
Promising to slash petrol prices during his election campaign, Tinubu declared in his presidential inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, “the fuel subsidy is gone,” overseeing a petrol price hike of nearly 488% in Africa’s largest producer by October 2024.
This also increased the price of electricity multifold because more than 58% of the Nigerian households, left out of the national grid, rely on petrol and diesel generators.
With storage capacity and cold-chain logistics limited, a lack of “reliable access to power also leads to high food losses.

When Rachel Reeves appeared at a Revolut corporate event to announce £110bn in fintech investment, few noticed the extraordinary symbolism. Here was the Chancellor of the Exchequer showcasing a company under active Financial Conduct Authority restrictions for failing to properly handle fraud—restrictions that prevent Revolut from operating as a fully trusted banking institution. Yet Treasury was presenting it as the crown jewel of UK financial services success. This wasn’t awkward optics. It was a signal: in the new economic model being constructed across Britain, institutional integrity is subordinate to investment announcements.
