In the sharpest possible contrast to the US approach to climate change, in a very grown-up adult fashion, the EU has publicly stated: “EU officials warn climate breakdown and wildlife loss are ruining ecosystems that underpin the economy.”
Whew!!! The world is still sane.
Like a cool refreshing late afternoon breeze, a great sense of relief has spread across the Continent. With a remarkable pitch-perfect admission, the EU informs its citizens of the truth no matter how much it hurts. The upside to this admission is an understanding by the citizens that something horrible is wrong. Ipso facto, they must pull together to do something about it. Definitively, this pulls everybody into the mix to be aware, be prepared, make sacrifices, if necessary, to make it right.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith boasted in June that a private sector proponent for a new bitumen pipeline to British Columbia’s coast would come forward “within weeks.” Three months have passed and exactly zero companies have bet their own money to back up the pipeline hype constantly coming from Smith.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the first tranche of infrastructure projects to be fast tracked by the federal government, which also conspicuously included no bitumen pipelines.
What gives? It is almost as if the oil industry does not share the giddy enthusiasm of the Alberta government for somehow doubling the province’s heavy oil production.
Perhaps companies have been reading recent news, which has not been good for those still believing that oil prices and demand would justify billions in long-term investments.

Recently the name Department of Defense was retired and that federal agency in charge of the military was given its original name, Department of War. Immediately president Donald Trump implied via one of his Truth Social posts that he was declaring war on the city of Chicago. He then walked back his comment claiming that "We're not going to war. We're going to clean up our cities," which may have seemed benign for those engaging in wishful thinking until Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth called a meeting of the top military brass.
The gathering began with Hegseth telling admirals and generals that they needed to shape up, literally.

The response of Hamas to U.S. President Donald Trump’s “peace” plan to end the war in Gaza came in late on Friday. It sparked immediate and conflicting reactions.
Five days after the U.S. president first announced his plan, the Palestinian movement gave its answer in a statement announcing that Hamas announced its “approval for the release of all hostages — living and dead – according to the exchange formula included in President Trump’s proposal.” Hamas added that it was ready to enter talks “to discuss the details.”
In a move practically unheard of by a U.S. president, Trump shared Hamas’s statement on his account on Truth Social:
“Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting peace,” Trump said, adding that “Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly!”

I was scheduled to give a talk at the National Press Club of Australia on Oct. 20 called “The Betrayal of Palestinian Journalists.” It was to focus on the amplification of Israeli lies in the press, which most reporters know are lies, betraying Palestinian colleagues who are slandered, targeted and killed by Israel. But, perhaps inadvertently proving my point, the chief executive of the press club, Maurice Reilly, cancelled the event.
The announcement of my talk disappeared from the web site. Reilly said “that in the interest of balancing out our program we will withdraw our offer.” The Israeli Ambassador, retired Lt. Colonel Amir Maimon, who spent 14 years in the Israeli military, is reportedly being considered to speak.

On September 30th, the UN Security Council voted 12 in favour to none against, with 3 abstentions (China, Pakistan, Russian Federation), “to authorise Member States to transition the Multinational Security Support mission [in Haiti] to the Gang Suppression Force for an initial period of 12 months. Among other terms, the organ decided that the Force shall have an authorized personnel ceiling of 5,550, consisting of 5,500 uniformed personnel — comprised of both military and police — and 50 civilians.” The UN stated that the mission is scheduled to be for just one year, but all evidence points towards an extended occupation with the U.S. using The Global Fragility Act which Trump signed into law in 2020 to justify the action.

The share of the U.S. wealth pie owned by the top 0.1 percent grew 59.6 percent from 1989 to 2024, according to an Institute for Policy Studies analysis of Federal Reserve data, while the share of the U.S. wealth pie owned by the bottom 50 percent of households has declined 26.1 percent, adjusted for inflation.
This bottom half of households in America — 66 million of them — had $4.1 trillion all together at the end of 2024. The 905 billionaires in the United States hold a combined $7.8 trillion in wealth, according to Forbes data from September 29, 2025. This alarming narrowing of wealth has given those at the very top political influence and power that undermines our democracy.

A Vision Of A Post-Capitalist Eco-Localism That Works
What might the world look like if climate change is not stopped? What if societies refuse to, or cannot rein in capitalism and its relentless growth and exploitation of nature? Chris Smaje, a writer and farmer in southwest England, offers some intelligent speculation in his recently published book, Finding Lights in a Dark Age: Sharing Land, Work and Craft.
Smaje is not a doomer or survivalist, nor given to lurid prophesy. His book is a serious analysis of current macro-political and social trends and how they might play out in everyday life. He extrapolates from existing trends -- the rising costs of fossil fuels, food, and transport, the proliferation of droughts, floods, and wildfires, etc. – to sketch a vision of a post-capitalist, climate-disrupted world that is already arriving.

7 October 2025 will mark the second anniversary of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. The World Health Organisation’s data page on Palestinian casualties, regularly updated using figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry and UN agencies, shows that around 66,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza over the last two years – 30 out of every 1,000 people who were living in Gaza (these numbers, however may be too low, as the ministry has often admitted that it has no capacity to keep up with the flow of death and does not know how many people are buried beneath the tonnes of rubble).
The UN children’s agency, UNICEF, calculates that 50,000 Palestinian children have been killed or injured.

The Israeli military has dismantled an entire humanitarian flotilla seeking to break its siege on war-ravaged Gaza, arresting hundreds of activists from dozens of vessels.
Livestream video showed Israeli forces forcing their way onboard the last vessel Friday morning. The Polish-flagged Marinette, which reportedly has a crew of six, was the final boat of the Global Sumud Flotilla – once a 44-strong fleet – to be seized by Israel.
The International Committee to Break the Siege of Gaza also announced in a statement that several detainees arrested by Israeli forces had “entered an open-ended hunger strike from the moment of their detention.”
US Approves $230m For Lebanese Army, Security Forces
The US government has approved $230 million for Lebanon’s security forces to bolster Washington’s push for the disarmament of Hezbollah, sources told Reuters on 3 October.
“The funding includes $190 million for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and $40 million for the Internal Security Forces,” an informed Lebanese source said. “The funding will allow the Internal Security Forces to take over internal security in Lebanon so the LAF can focus on other critical missions,” the source added.
“For a small country like Lebanon, that's really, really significant,” a US congressional aide said, adding that the funds were released “just before Washington's fiscal year ended on 30 September.”

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino has reported this Thursday, October 2, that at least five US F-35 fighter jets have flown over the Caribbean Sea near the Venezuelan border, an action described as a provocation and a threat to national security.
Hours later, the Venezuelan Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs released a joint communiqué formally condemning the incursion, which it said occurred approximately 75 kilometers (about 47 miles) off the Venezuelan coast within the Maiquetía Flight Information Region (FIR).
“We have detected within the Venezuelan Comprehensive Defense System […] more than five vectors with flight characteristics of 400 knots and flying at an altitude of 35,000 feet,” Padrino said during a briefing. “What does that indicate? They are combat aircraft that US imperialism has dared to bring close to Venezuelan shores.”

On a sweltering morning in Vidalia, Louisiana, Shannan Cornwell and Freddie Green got in a long line to wait for food.
The couple has struggled to pay for groceries amid soaring prices and health setbacks, they said. She had back surgery. He had undergone cancer treatment.
They turned to a local food bank to supplement their diets. Although they’re grateful for the food, lately they’ve noticed changes in what they receive. For months in the spring and summer their pickups did not include any meat, Cornwell said.
“You have to learn how to adapt to what you have,” Green said. “Which is hard,” Cornwell added.
In the spring, the Trump administration abruptly cut $500 million in deliveries from a program that sends U.S.-produced meat, dairy, eggs and produce to food banks and other organizations across the country — about a quarter of the funding the program received in 2024.

Black Hills — 100 years ago, Mount Rushmore would have its first dedication, and one of three dedications in its first five years of construction. The Rapid City Journal reported that three thousand people joined in the dedication on October 1, 1925, and it was also reported that same evening that project’s creative director—Gutzon Borglum—had no funding to begin construction. Since it inception, perhaps the nation’s most well known monument has had problems and most of those stories haven’t involved Indigenous people.
“Over the last 100 years, there has been little history at Mount Rushmore that reflects the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota people of the Black Hills,” said Darrell Red Cloud, a fifth-generation descendant of Oglala Lakota leader Chief Red Cloud who now teaches Lakota studies at Oglala Lakota College in Kyle, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
