Chicago Day Laborer, In ICE Detention, Facing Retaliation

Willian Giménez González, a known advocate for the rights of day laborers who was abducted by federal agents on September 12, is speaking out from ICE detention. He says that federal authorities transferred him from the Broadview, Ill., ICE facility, to a detention center in Michigan, to move him away from his supporters. “I believe I was moved to Michigan at the last minute because I had the support of the community, and because my lawyer and politicians were protesting outside the jail,” he said, referring to the Broadview ICE facility. “I believe that because I had people fighting for me, I was targeted for transfer to prevent my supporters from helping me.”

OpenAI Slipped Shopping Into 800 Million ChatGPT Users’ Chats

Your phone buzzes at 6 a.m. It’s ChatGPT: “I see you’re traveling to New York this week. Based on your preferences, I’ve found three restaurants near your hotel. Would you like me to make a reservation?” You didn’t ask for this. The AI simply knew your plans from scanning your calendar and email and decided to help. Later, you mention to the chatbot needing flowers for your wife’s birthday. Within seconds, beautiful arrangements appear in the chat. You tap one: “Buy now.” Done. The flowers are ordered. This isn’t science fiction.

A Return To The Balfour Declaration

The highly touted picture of “Middle East peace” is quite deceptive. Nobody in the region truly believes that peace is at hand, that there is a credible path to peace, or that the thorny issues of the Arab-Israeli conflict have been resolved. It is not the first time that a U.S. president congratulates himself — and is congratulated by Western and Middle Eastern parties — for reaching a settlement of the conflict. Jimmy Carter was hailed when he presided over the Camp David Accords — it was supposed to end the conflict, but in reality it gave Israel a free hand to attack any combination of Arab countries and the Palestinians because the major Arab military force was neutralized (through bribes to the ruling despot and the military brass).

The Likely Consequences Of A US War On Venezuela

Funny thing about war: it is relatively easy to start. An insult here. A lie there. A “false flag” as a casus belli there, and shots, bombs, missiles ensue…and destruction and deaths follow until there is some sort of “victory”. However, when the odds are stacked against a much smaller opponent that is facing an overwhelmingly larger foe, then “victory” will not appear straightforward, or even clear. It will be messy. This is the case of Venezuela. The USA thinks its technological superiority will allow it to subdue the Venezuelan government and people: in other words, bomb them into submission.

How Trump Is Building A Violent, Shadowy Federal Police Force

When Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers stormed through Santa Ana, California, in June, panicked calls flooded into the city’s emergency response system. Recordings of those calls, obtained by ProPublica, captured some of the terror residents felt as they watched masked men ambush people and force them into unmarked cars. In some cases, the men wore plain clothes and refused to identify themselves. There was no way to confirm whether they were immigration agents or imposters. In six of the calls to Santa Ana police, residents described what they were seeing as kidnappings.

Emissions From Global Meat And Dairy Companies Rival Fossil Fuels

The world’s major meat and dairy companies are generating combined greenhouse gas emissions on par with some of the biggest fossil fuel producers, according to new estimates from environmental and food policy experts issued ahead of the COP30 climate talks in Belém, Brazil. More than half of the estimated emissions stem from methane, a powerful but short-lived gas that scientists warn must be sharply reduced in this decade to keep global warming within 1.5°C. The analysis, Roasting the Planet: Big Meat and Dairy’s Big Emissions, was published today by Foodrise, Friends of the Earth U.S., Greenpeace Nordic, and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

The Israeli Occupation Forces Attacked Our Ship Conscience

The voyage went relatively well up until the interception. We sailed with the 1000 Madleens to Gaza flotilla so we spent some time catching up to them, waiting for them and then sailing with them. I met a couple of their people while we were in prison and at the hotel after we were released. They were good folks - and highly skilled sailors as well.  The weather on the passage was mixed. We had a decent blow a couple of days in and seas were running a meter to a meter and a half. The medical staff used almost all of our seasickness medication during the week we were at sea but we never ran out. Fortunately, things calmed down for the last three days of the voyage. Generally, spirits ran high among the participants and I never felt like we were worried about the Israelis doing anything to us at all.

Trump Threatens To ‘Kill’ Hamas Over Execution Of Israeli-Backed Gangs

US President Donald Trump threatened late Thursday, October 16, that he would endorse a military action against Hamas if it continues to target local gangs hired by Israel in the besieged Gaza strip.  “If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the Deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.  Trump’s stern warning was proclaimed, days after he was asked by reporters onboard Air Force One about the executions of who they considered Hamas’ rivals, suggesting they are a sign that Hamas is reestablishing its authority in the besieged Gaza Strip. The answer of the US president then was totally contradictory to his Thursday post on Truth Social, because he confirmed to reporters that the US had given approval to the Palestinian group to do so “for a period of time” to eradicate crimes, and stop problems.

US Repatriates Survivors Of Its Latest Boat Attack In The Caribbean

For the first time since the US began extrajudicially bombing boats in Venezuelan waters this year,  a US military attack did not result in the deaths of all crew members. It was reported that there were two survivors after the bombing of what the US called a “drug boat” without providing evidence. The incident comes amid an ongoing US military escalation in the Caribbean targeting Venezuela, under the guise of a supposed anti-drugs operation. The illegal US military actions in the international waters close to Venezuela, which include blowing up of civilian boats, have left almost 30 people dead in since early September, with no evidence presented of the victims’ alleged ties to drug trafficking. These actions are part of a U.S. military expansion in the southern Caribbean, with destroyers, F-35 fighter jets, a nuclear submarine, and some 10,000 troops deployed.

‘Newspeak’ Comes To The Energy Department

In George Orwell’s novel, 1984, a totalitarian regime now rules the homeland and operates by three slogans: 1) War is peace, 2) freedom is slavery and 3) ignorance is strength. In 1984 the term “Newspeak” refers to what is essentially a mandatory style guide for using the English language under that regime by substituting Newspeak formulations for common words and phrases so as to make public discourse conform to the ruling party’s orthodoxy. (For a list Newspeak words and phrases, check here.) Not surprisingly, failure to conform to this style in written and oral communications is considered a crime. In fact, to think thoughts contrary to those expressed in Newspeak terms is considered a “thoughtcrime” because it implies one’s personal values are not in harmony with official party dogma.

Nobel War Prize

Alfred Nobel’s will spelled out how he wanted to honor those who are accomplished in the fields of medicine, literature, physics, chemistry, and “the person who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses.” While Nobel’s wishes would seem to be clear, the Nobel Peace Prize is rarely awarded to anyone who actually works for peace as Nobel described. There are many worthy people and organizations who have carried out good deeds for humanity, but few of the winners have actually been peacemakers.

Trump Admits Complicity In Genocide

As Donald Trump congratulates Israel for its conduct of the genocide in Gaza, he should be charged with aiding and abetting genocide, not given the Nobel Peace Prize. In his speech on Monday to the Israeli Knesset, Trump spent an hour bragging about how he ended the “war” in Gaza and “an age of terror and death,” declaring, “This is the historic dawn of a new Middle East.” He decried the “thousands of innocent Israeli civilians” who “were attacked by terrorists in one of the most evil and heinous desecrations of innocent life the world has ever seen; the worst slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust,” adding, “The cruelty of October 7th struck to the core of humanity itself. Nobody could believe what they were witnessing.”

Whitewashing Gas Exploration In Post-Genocide Gaza

In December 2022, Israeli Ministry of Energy launched the Fourth Offshore Bid Round offering new exploration licenses. A year later, it awarded licenses to several Israeli and international companies: Eni (Italy), Dana Petroleum (UK, a subsidiary of a South Korean company, and Ratio Petroleum (Israel). The problem is that these tenders violated international law. A few months later in June 2023, following years of stalled talks, Israel approved the development of the Gaza Marine field, while Egypt’s state-owned EGAS (Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company) was to lead extraction efforts in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority.

The Good And Bad Of Amazon’s ‘Dark Patterns’ Settlement

When the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced it had settled its “dark patterns” lawsuit against Amazon last month, leaders at the antitrust and consumer protection watchdog celebrated. “Today, we are putting billions of dollars back into Americans’ pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again,” FTC chair Andrew Ferguson said. Ferguson, whom Trump appointed chair in January, is, of course, duty-bound to champion the deal as a victory for consumers and the administration. But the real impacts and costs of the agency’s deal with Amazon are more complicated.

Nuclear Goes Political

Climate change has a new partner in its quest to alter life as we know it: Nuclear, the power buzzword for the AI Holy Grail of human submission to digital electrons mimicking human brainpower. And AI can’t survive, can’t thrive without enormous amounts of electrical energy. Wall Street has the answer and politicians agree that nuclear is the big, beautiful answer to a whole new advanced level of human mental experience with electrons. The nuclear narrative is more positive than ever, “go for it,” but what if something goes wrong or is nuclear suddenly risks-free?
