On Monday, the Department of Defense announced that it had awarded a massive new contract to build the nation’s largest migrant detention camp on the Fort Bliss military base, a facility that will play a key role in the Trump administration’s deportation plans. Unmentioned was that one of the subcontractors slated to work on the project, Disaster Management Group, is owned by Nathan Albers, who previously co-owned a company that pleaded guilty in 2019 to a scheme to hire undocumented workers and conceal them from immigration authorities. Albers is a big-time Republican donor who has spent time at Mar-a-Lago.

I used to think San Francisco was a compassionate city. But I’ve come to understand that what looks like bureaucratic dysfunction is often deliberate: a system engineered to displace. Over the past year, I’ve watched my RV community be targeted, harassed, and evicted. Not by accident—but by design. It began on Bernal Heights Boulevard, where our small group — about 12 RVs with individuals, families, and pets — lived in relative peace. We shared meals and watched each other’s things while folks went to work. Then came a wave of 311 complaints: reports of sewage, parking issues, even allegations of harassment we believe were fabricated. Police soon followed. One officer warned us we’d be arrested “if we so much as winked at a teenager.”

Israel is planning a “major offensive” against Yemen and is waiting for a green light from the Israeli political echelon, Israel’s Channel 14 reported on 23 July. “The Israeli security establishment is working around the clock on a major offensive plan against the Yemeni Ansarallah group, which will put an end to the numerous terrorist incidents and rocket attacks on Israel,” the Hebrew channel said. “We are building capabilities, and we will know how to activate them once the political echelon makes a decision,” a senior official told the outlet. “What we accomplished in 12 minutes in Iran, we will also know how to do in Yemen,” the official added.

The invitation extended to Black Agenda Report to participate in the 2025 Belt and Road Journalists Forum , held in the cities of Nanchang, Jingdezhen, and Ganzhou in Jiangxi province China, was a testament to our 19 year history of providing “news, commentary, and analysis from a Black left perspective.“ Our work is appreciated nationally and internationally, and this columnist attended the Forum along with 100 media representatives from around the world. The Forum is a venue for journalists from Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) nations, but Black Agenda Report was also included, the only outlet participating from the United States.

Today, more and more US government officials, especially those in Donald Trump’s two administrations, have invoked the 200-year-old colonial Monroe Doctrine to claim that Latin America is supposedly Washington’s “backyard”, that the US empire should control it, and that China and Russia cannot have relations with the countries in the region. Given that the US government constantly violates the sovereignty of countries in Latin America, it makes perfect sense that several governments in the region have deepened their partnership with China and Russia, because they see that Beijing and Moscow actually respect their independence and have helped them to economically develop, while Washington has only sought to exploit them.

In 2018, Seattle-based journalist - Charles Mudede - wrote a piece entitled, “The Fact is Nothing is Going to be Done About Climate Change Until it Kills A Lot of White People .” Therein he remarks, “What is between climate change and meaningful human action is simply white American lives. As long as they are not directly threatened, we can continue business as usual.” This may very well have been true seven years ago, but since then we have witnessed the deaths of plenty of white folk from Europe to the United States due to climate-exacerbated events including, but not limited to, wildfires, hurricanes, and extreme flooding.

Broad economic sanctions, most of which are imposed by the U.S. government, kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people each year — disproportionately children. This week the Lancet Global Health journal published an article that estimated that number at about 564,000 annually over a decade. This is comparable to the annual deaths around the world from armed conflict. Sanctions are becoming the preferred weapon of the United States and some allies — not because they are less destructive than military action, but more likely because the toll is less visible.

A confidential memorandum obtained by Periodista Digital reveals a controversial agreement that would place Armenia's Zangezur Corridor under US control for 99 years, effectively surrendering key national territory to US private military companies and facilitating unimpeded Azerbaijani access to Nakhchivan and Turkiye. The document, titled “Memorandum of Understanding on the Creation of the 'Trump Bridge' Transport Corridor,” has reportedly been approved by Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the US, according to the Spanish newspaper.

Trump To Open Country’s Largest Immigrant Detention Center

The US Department of Defense has awarded a contract worth USD 1.26 billion to the Virginia-based company Acquisition Logistics LLC to build a sprawling short-term ICE detention center in the Fort Bliss army base in El Paso, Texas. The center is set to have a capacity of 5,000 detainees which would make it the largest immigrant detention center in the country. The facility, much like the newly-minted “Alligator Alcatraz”, will be composed entirely of tents and temporary structures, raising the alarm about potential conditions of detention in the scorching dry heat of western Texas.

A judge has ordered the release of Maryland father Kilmar Abrego Garcia from federal custody after he was unlawfully deported by the Trump administration to an infamous megaprison in his native El Salvador. After the White House baselessly alleged for months that Abrego Garcia was a dangerous MS-13 gang member — with President Donald Trump going so far as to present a clearly doctored photograph of Abrego Garcia’s hand tattooed with those letters and numbers — a number of legal challenges eventually forced the administration to return him to the United States.

UN’s Top Court Rules ‘Clean, Healthy’ Environment Is A Human Right

In a landmark finding, the United Nations’ top court on Wednesday issued an advisory opinion stating that a “clean, healthy and sustainable environment” is a human right. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling supports the obligation of UN member states to tackle the climate crisis and outlines the consequences they could face if they fail to do so. “The consequences of climate change are severe and far-reaching: they affect both natural ecosystems and human populations. These consequences underscore the urgent and existential threat posed by climate change,” said ICJ president Yuji Iwasawa, as The Guardian reported.

Israel is accelerating its efforts to cement its permanent control over the West Bank through a number of sweeping legal and institutional changes, according to a new report from Adalah, The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. The 87-page report, Legal Structures of Distinction, Separation, and Territorial Domination, describes the ways in which the Netanyahu government is rapidly building on a long-standing legal matrix that further threatens Palestinians’ right to self-determination. “These developments are not something new to us,” Dr. Suhad Bishara, Legal Director of Adalah and lead author of the report, told Mondoweiss.

Dell Technologies enjoys deeper ties with the Israeli military than previously known, including enabling Israeli soldiers to target and kill Palestinian civilians using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, the Electronic Intifada reported on 24 July. In January 2023, the US-based multinational won a $150 million tender from Israel’s Defense Ministry to supply servers and IT infrastructure to the Israeli army, other security bodies, and the ministry itself. The deal included services provided by Dell subsidiaries VMware and EMC Israel Advanced Information Technologies, which offered both technology and training to Israeli military units.

Press freedom and immigrants’ rights advocates are calling for the release of an Atlanta journalist from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention after he was arrested last month while filming an anti-Trump protest. Mario Guevara, a native of El Salvador, has lived in the United States legally for more than two decades, where he became renowned as one of the Atlanta area’s most trusted immigration reporters. The Guardian described Guevara, an Emmy-winning reporter, as “the person that immigrants call when they see an [ICE] raid going down in their neighborhood.”
