When Australia’s Woodside Energy Group announced April 29 that it plans to move forward with its Louisiana LNG export terminal, the state hailed the move as the “largest single foreign direct investment and greenfield project in Louisiana history.” It could also create perhaps the largest single local tax giveaway in U.S. history, under a Louisiana law offering corporations property tax breaks worth billions of dollars, a new Sierra Club study shared with DeSmog finds — representing a massive subsidy from Louisiana communities for exporting fossil fuels from the U.S. to Europe and Asia.

They Are Making Venezuela’s Economy Scream

Before 2017, Venezuela relied on its oil revenue for 95% of its export earnings. Moreover, oil revenue has been critical for financing the government’s progressive social agenda. This loss has caused inflation in Venezuela to soar: according to official Central Bank of Venezuela numbers from 2019, the highest inter-annual inflation rate was 344,510%, meaning prices increased by a factor of 3,400 in a single year. This is an unimaginable disaster for any country and an enormous strain on the population. While Venezuela has been under attack by the US government and its allies since Hugo Chávez’s first election in 1998, Trump’s 2017 Executive Order 13808 set off a new wave of financial sanctions that denied Venezuela access to international credit markets, severely undermining its ability to sell oil abroad.

As the U.S. doubles down on tariffs and trade wars, African nations—particularly in the Sahel—find themselves at a critical juncture. The West calls its protectionism “economic security” and “national interest.” But when African states make similar moves to assert control over their land, labor, and futures, they are labeled authoritarian, unstable, or dangerous. Sovereignty for the West is lauded. Sovereignty for the South is a threat. The truth is that protectionism has always been political. From Alexander Hamilton’s “infant industry” policies in the U.S. to South Korea’s strategic shielding of domestic industries in the 1960s and 1970s, protectionism has never been about fairness.

Hegseth Threatens Iran Over Yemen

On Wednesday night, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth threatened Iran over Tehran’s alleged support for the Houthis amid the US’s heavy Yemen bombing campaign. “Message to IRAN: We see your LETHAL support to The Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing,” Hegseth wrote on X. “You know very well what the US Military is capable of — and you were warned. You will pay the CONSEQUENCE at the time and place of our choosing,” he added. While the Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, are aligned with Iran, the Yemeni group has its own domestic missile and drone program, meaning they’re not reliant on Tehran for military support. This has been acknowledged by US officials, including President Trump.

The Israeli far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has wrapped up his weeklong visit to the United States. The settler leader’s trip drew protests and generated violence, but these developments didn’t stop Ben-Gvir from meeting with Republican lawmakers at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and the U.S. Capitol. Ben-Gvir has previously been convicted of supporting terrorism and inciting anti-Arab racism. Before running for office, he kept a picture of Baruch Goldstein, the Israeli religious extremist who murdered 29 Palestinian people in a Mosque, hanging in his living room.

In a statement issued this Monday, April 28, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil condemned the separation of a 2-year-old Venezuelan child from her mother as an act of “extreme violence,” calling it “absolutely unacceptable and unthinkable in the 21st century.” The statement emphasized that this incident reflects a broader pattern of migrant rights violations, directly contravening international frameworks such as the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the United Nations Charter. “This represents yet another egregious case of family separation, forcibly removing a child from their emotional and biological bonds,” it declared.

Despite U.S. pressure for a fast deal Russia does not expect any quick resolution of the conflict. It just announced a new unilateral ceasefire from May 8 to May 10, i.e. around the 80th anniversary of its victory in World War II on May 9. It is another public sign that Russia is willing to adhere to a ceasefire agreement IF the conditions are right. Trump still tries to behave like a neutral mediator in a conflict between Kiev and Moscow. He wants to impose a peace deal that projects his personal 'greatness'. But the U.S. has been and continues to be the main party of the war with Russia while Ukraine is the mere proxy force that does the bleeding.

On March 28, President Trump issued an executive order purporting to bar federal workers at dozens of federal agencies and subdivisions from joining labor unions or entering into collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) with the federal government. Initial reporting suggests that the order could strip two-thirds of unionized federal workforce, or nearly 700,000 civil servants, of their collective bargaining rights. Following the issuance of the order, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) issued a memorandum directing the named agencies to implement the president’s directive, which presumably will include the termination of any collective bargaining agreements and a refusal to recognize existing unions.
