Cuba Under Intensified US Sanctions Confronts Its Greatest Challenge

Despite draconian coercive measures by the US – overwhelmingly condemned every year by the UN General Assembly, with the next vote slated for October 29-30 – the Cuban Revolution has had extraordinary successes. This small, impoverished, formerly colonized island nation has achieved levels of education, medical services, and performance in many other fields, including sports, that rival the first world, through the application of socialist principles. Cuba has rightly become a model of internationalism and an exemplar of socialism. As a consequence, every US administration for over six decades has targeted this “threat of a good example.”

Global South Denounces Genocide; Nicaragua Ends Relations With Israel

More and more countries in the Global South are cutting relations with Israel, accusing it of committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. United Nations experts have stated that there “are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating the commission of the crime of genocide … has been met”, adding that “the genocide in Gaza is the most extreme stage of a long-standing settler colonial process of erasure of the native Palestinians”. Scientific experts have estimated that 186,000 Palestinians will die due to Israel’s war of extermination on Gaza, representing roughly 8% of the population of the densely populated strip.

Hurricane Milton Wreaks Havoc As FEMA Begs For More Assistance

Only one week after Hurricane Helene left a trail of destruction in the Southeastern region of the United States, which the US government was wholly unprepared and unwilling to contend with, Hurricane Milton is expected to launch a new path of devastation across the state of Florida, primarily. As of Thursday morning, over three million Florida residents are without power, with some counties having as many as 80% of residents lacking in electricity. At least nine are dead following the storm as crews rescue stranded residents. Residents Blamed Amid Evacuation Orders As the storm was barreling towards Florida, some media outlets seemed to follow a narrative of blaming residents themselves for not evacuating before the storm hit

Congress Failed To Allocate Relief Funding Ahead Of Hurricane Helene

The US South is contending with the trail of destruction left by Hurricane Helene, which devastated the region over the past few days, including the states of North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, across the Central Gulf Coast and reaching into the southern Appalachian region. The extent of damage is only beginning to be revealed as the death toll climbs to at least 130 people, with hundreds more still missing. Some of the most impoverished areas of the US are now having to contend with what could amount to between USD 145 billion and USD 160 billion in damages and economic loss according to AccuWeather. Over one million people are still without power.

Can The UN Fulfill Its Mission In An Imperialist-Dominated World?

During the months of September and October the United Nations is holding its 79th General Assembly, which is the space of broadest participation of the international body. The United Nations’ legitimacy, credibility and capacity to fulfill its founding mission to ensure peace and security have been questioned for decades, and 2023-24 was no different. Still, never before has the world witnessed a genocide unfolding before its eyes. In this context, the United Nations’ inability to do anything to stop it shines a bright and unforgiving light on the limitations of this body. Shaky Foundations Throughout its history the United Nations has been subjected to intense efforts at control or sabotage by colonial powers and US imperialist interests.

US Imposes Another Year Of Blockade On Cuba

In September, and for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. President Joe Biden renewed U.S. sanctions on Cuba under the Trading with the Enemy Act (TWEA), an archaic 1917 law designed to cut off trade with Germany during World War I and a significant pillar of the blockade. The announcement means that the economic blockade, a policy upheld by both Republican and Democratic administrations for over six decades, will remain imposed on the island through 2025, despite Cuba’s urgent calls for it to end. Let’s not forget that it was Biden, the democrat who while campaigning for president, said he would improve relations with us.

Nearly 600 Parliamentarians From 73 Countries Call On US To Take Cuba Off “State Sponsor Of Terrorism” List

People of conscience across the world continue to put pressure on the government of the United States to remove Cuba from the “State Sponsor of Terrorism” list. This time, a group of nearly 600 parliamentarians from 73 different countries penned a joint letter condemning the continued inclusion of Cuba on the list. The letter was coordinated and published by the Progressive International (PI) on February 20. The lawmakers are calling on their respective governments to “take immediate action to advocate for [the designation’s] removal.” Cuba was added to the US’s list of “State Sponsors of Terrorism” (SSoT) in 2021 by conservative President Donald Trump, but Biden, Trump’s more liberal successor, has thus far done nothing to remove this designation.

Thousands Of People In US Send 800 Tons Of Urgently Needed Flour To Cuba

On August 30, US-based activists delivered 800 tons of flour to Cuba via the “Let Cuba Live: Bread for our Neighbors” campaign. This campaign has been months in the making, with the US-based Peoples Forum raising hundreds of thousands in donations, and intends to offset the effects of the deadly regime of US sanctions and the blockade against Cuba. Over 1,300 people donated to the campaign. “The concept of the campaign is simple: Cuba is our neighbor, and we can’t let our neighbors go hungry,” said Manolo De Los Santos, Executive Director of The People’s Forum. “This hunger is imposed directly by the White House, and Biden could end it right away by allowing Cuba to trade freely.”

123 Countries Do Not Believe Cuba Sponsors Terrorism

A declaration signed by 123 countries, issued from the United Nations Human Rights Council, demands the United States remove Cuba from the List of States that allegedly sponsor terrorism, the effects of which reinforce the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US Government. The First Secretary of the Party’s Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, expressed his gratitude through social networks for this expression of support. Published in the Foreign Ministry of the Island, the document again points out that the unjust accusation goes against the fundamental principles and the imperative norms of International Law.

Cuba And Nicaragua: Two Sister Revolutions

There are no identical political processes, much less Revolutions, which are conditioned by history and the context in which they develop. However, in Our America there are no two processes with as many similarities as those of Cuba and Nicaragua. The hallmark of both revolutions is often referred to as the method used to seize power, through armed struggle, something that truly makes them unique and probably unrepeatable. We Cubans feel the joy of the Nicaraguan people as our own in celebrating this 45th Anniversary, and no occasion is more propitious to renew the commitment bequeathed by our heroes, to honor each day more these exemplary relations that forged years of struggle and sacrifice and that nothing and no one can stand between these two sister Revolutions.

Donald Trump Is Not A ‘Threat To The Deep State’

An issue that I often try to avoid is domestic US partisan politics. It's very frustrating to talk about US politics because people tend to be very dogmatic and very partisan. They pick a party, the Republicans or the Democrats. They defend them no matter what. They treat the political party like a sports team or a superhero that can do no wrong. This is despite the fact that ironically the Republican and Democratic parties share a lot of their policies in common. The foreign policy that they carry out is 95% the same in this bipartisan orthodoxy. Their economic policy is the same. And yet people get angry if you criticize a Democrat, they think you are a Republican.

US Exploits Animosity Towards Migrants To Demonize Socialist Countries

The Republican party has been waging a blatantly racist campaign to criminalize migrants. Instead of pushing back on that narrative, the party that purports to be for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Democrats) is exploiting this racist anger to discredit a country it has targeted for regime change—Nicaragua—apparently for not sufficiently suppressing the rights of migrants. As Congresswoman Maria Salazar (R-FL) told a Biden administration representative at a recent hearing, “We agree on the end goal.” This is part of a relentless campaign to punish countries that dare to resist Washington’s agenda with suffocating unilateral coercive measures (aka “sanctions”).

Pioneers For Communism: Strive To Be Like Che

The French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once called Ernesto Che Guevara the “most complete human being of our age.” Today, 96 years after his birth, it is still difficult to find a better example of the socialist human being than the one who proclaimed courageously with his unforgettable last words, “Shoot, coward! You are only going to kill a man!” Che was for Fidel Castro “the most extraordinary of [the] revolutionary comrades;” a man with an infectious character who organically lifted those around him to emulate his revolutionary virtues of “altruism,” “selflessness,” and the “immediate [and] instantaneous willingness” he had towards “carrying out the most difficult missions” for the socialist struggle.

Russia And Cuba, Beyond Warships

While the international media only report on the arrival of a Russian naval detachment in Cuba, relations between the Russian Federation and Cuba go much further and are getting stronger. Unlike the Biden administration, which is focused on maintaining the economic and financial persecution measures against Cuba, the Russian government is working together with the Cuban government to reach mutually beneficial agreements, which you will certainly not read about in the major mainstream outlets. Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Russia to attend a meeting of the BRICS+ forum and to hold official talks with his Russian counterpart.

We Win Peace When We Struggle For It: Cuba And The Zone Of Peace

In the midst of May Day Celebrations in Cuba, on May 4th and 5th participants from 30 countries gathered in Guantanamo, Cuba for the 8th International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases. Representatives from social movements for peace, and mass based organizations from around the world came together for two days of discourse and dialogue on the conditions of peace and war during these times of US/Western backed Zionist genocide in Palestine, and the western led invasion of Haiti (with many of the same foreign interests involved in both), to declare the necessity to work towards peace and to close down all foreign military bases that are a direct threat to the sovereignty of those lands and to peace worldwide.
