UN High Commissioner On Human Rights Calls For Action To Avoid Climate Apartheid

We are deeply alarmed by the imposition of the death penalty on 30 people by the Specialised First Instance Criminal Court of the de facto authorities in Sana’a. The 30 men – most of whom are academics, students and politicians affiliated with the Islah party that has been critical of the Houthis – were sentenced to death on Tuesday. The UN Human Rights Office has received credible information suggesting that many of those convicted were subjected to arbitrary or unlawful detention, as well as torture and other ill-treatment in custody.

Statement On Human Rights In Venezuela

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet’s July 5 report on Venezuela echoes the US government’s talking points, which are designed to terminate Venezuela’s two-decade-old Bolivarian Revolution, without acknowledging Venezuela’s manifest accomplishments or even recognizing victims of US-backed rightwing violence in Venezuela. A more factual report would have included: What amounts to a war by the US government on Venezuela is motivated by the accomplishments of the Bolivarian Revolution, not its faults.

Migrants Denounce ‘Psychological Abuse’ in US Detention Centers

U.S. authorities recently recognized extreme overcrowding and health risks at Border Patrol centers. Central Americans allege they were victims of "psychological abuse" by U.S. federal authorities at detention centers in Arizona, which human rights defenders have described as "concentration camps." Javier Torres, a Honduran father who crossed the border with his wife and his 5-year old son, stayed at three detention centers, where he was kept in extremely cold rooms, with music at full volume, permanently lit intense lights, amidst inmates wearing orange uniforms.

Unilateral Sanctions And International Law

The world order established by the UN Charter takes precedence over other international and regional treaties and imposes positive and negative obligations on member states, including the United States of America and the European Union. This is stipulated in Article 103 of the Charter, the supremacy clause. The question arises whether in the light of the UN Charter unilateral coercive measures could be considered compatible with modern international law?

Afro-Colombian Human Rights Defender Facing Assassination

Danelly Estupiñan defends the rights of the afro-descendent population in Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca as part of the organization Black Community Process (Proceso Comunitario Negro). For the last seven months, Danelly has been facing surveillance from unknown men, which increased last week from once a day and only at her home to two times per day and in all locations she visits. The unknown men conduct surveillance not only on Danelly but also on her family members. They take pictures and video of what they are doing. We call upon the Public Prosecutor’s Office to launch an immediate investigation into these incidents in order to ensure that Danelly is protected.

In The U.S. They Are Never Called Human Rights Violations

Trump’s 2020 budget proposal reflects another significant increase in military spending along with corresponding cuts in spending by Federal agencies tasked with the responsibility for providing critical services and income support policies for working class and poor people. Trump’s call for budget cuts by Federal agencies is mirrored by the statutorily imposed austerity policies in most states and many municipalities. Those cuts represent the continuing imposition of neoliberal policies in the U.S. even though the “A” word for austerity is almost never used to describe those policies.

US Sanctions Violate Human Rights And International Code Of Conduct

GENEVA (6 May 2019) – An independent expert appointed by the Human Rights Council has expressed deep concern at the recent imposition of unilateral coercive measures on Cuba, Venezuela and Iran by the United States, saying the use of economic sanctions for political purposes violates human rights and the norms of international behaviour.  Such action may precipitate man-made humanitarian catastrophes of unprecedented proportions.

Israel’s Settler Railway Could Be Going Nowhere Fast

Trade unions and human rights organizations in France are celebrating as a victory the withdrawal of train manufacturer Alstom from the Jerusalem light rail. Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that a Greek-led consortium failed to submit a bid. France’s Alstom confirmed to media last week that it had dropped plans to bid on the extension of the Israeli railway that links settlements in the West Bank to each other and to Jerusalem. Israel’s construction of settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is a war crime.

Court Refuses To Block Panel Talk On Palestine At UMass-Amherst

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Robert L. Ullmann on Thursday refused to issue an injunction requested by attorney Karen Hurvitz to prevent a panel discussion on Palestine from being convened at University of Massachusetts campus. Hurvitz argued the event could wound the college’s reputation, harm Jewish students and violate anti-discrimination policies. The program, titled, “Not Backing Down: Israel, Free Speech & the Battle for Palestinian Rights” will now go ahead as scheduled on Saturday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the UMass Fine Arts Center.

Ex-UN Human Rights Expert Blasts ‘Manipulation’ on Venezuela: ‘We Are Swimming in an Ocean of Lies’

Former United Nations human rights expert and top legal scholar has harshly criticized the international body’s reporting on Venezuela, calling it “unprofessional,” politicized, and unfairly slanted in favor of the country’s right-wing opposition. “We are swimming in an ocean of lies,” explained Alfred de Zayas. “When I went to Venezuela, I expected to find a humanitarian crisis.” “I was predetermined to find a humanitarian crisis,” he continued. “I walked the streets, I spoke to people of all kinds, and that was not the case. “That means I had been manipulated. I had been lied to.

The Misleading Role Of Human Rights NGOs In International Politics

When the media reports on events happening in countries other than their own, the nature of the information they rely on tends to be very different than they otherwise would use when reporting on domestic matters. Although most major news institutions have correspondents on site in different nations, most of them rely on the same information from the same sources in their repots, which can be very dangerous given its one-sidedness. Any journalist with integrity and respect for his profession should know better and check his sources properly before returning the information back home.

Fulfilling The Prophecy: The Indigenous Peoples March

The Mayan prophecy that I have been raised with teaches that this time in history is an era of great significance for global human consciousness. Through our prophecy, we are taught that as of December 21, 2012, a new age of human consciousness was born. In this new era of consciousness for the first time in the history of our species, the mind of the North and the mind of the South could meet and see from one another’s perspective.

Shutoffs Continue As The People Of Detroit Fight For Water As A Human Right

Step onto downtown Detroit’s tiled sidewalks past the Kern Clock Tower and storefront restaurants and you’ll find Campus Martius. This small park at the center of the greatest comeback story in post-industrial America has become a symbol for life continuing after ruin. Climb into your car and drive down Woodward Avenue. Hear the bell of the QLine cars and the vibrant nightlife of the restaurants, clubs and concert halls. These are what leaders call signs of economic progress in a major city that the State of Michigan can finally take pride in. Now take a turn down any of the major bisecting streets. Drive past the Eastern Market or Wayne State University.

A Surge Of Climate Lawsuits Target Human Rights, Damage From Fossil Fuels

A climate denier is in the White House, pushing policies that will boost emissions. Congress is doing nothing to stop him. So citizens and local governments who are facing the impacts of rising seas, worsening heat waves and extreme weather are increasingly looking to the courts for help. The past year saw a surge in new lawsuits filed against fossil fuel companies, and major developments in cases pressing governments for action in the United States and abroad. And while the plaintiffs haven't secured any substantial victories in U.S. courts, they may be scoring a different victory by drawing attention to the inaction of Congress and the Executive Branch, said Michael Gerrard...

It’s Never ‘Just the Immigrants’

The debasement of public discourse on immigration policy; the wink-and-nudge of encouragement offered to the most sinister fringes of the American far-right; or the aggravation of racial animosity against people of color in the United States. Yet this country’s history also points to other, often overlooked tendencies. Politically, institutionally, and legally, the targeting of immigrants has almost always figured prominently in wider attacks on labor movements and civil liberties. To a large and alarming extent, it’s the same story today.
